Just read a NY Post piece on the organizational push for Gardner to lead off. I have to agree with this wholeheartedly. The guy sees a ton of pitches (led the league at 4.61P/PA) and posted an OBP of .383 last yr in his first full big league season. He also finished the yr hurt. Now, fully healthy, he should march closer to that .400OBP and at the top of the order with his speed, he'd be a pest. I dont move Jeter too far. I'd put him in the 2 slot since I do think he has somewhat of a bounceback offensive season. My ideal lineup is...
1. Gardner
2. Jeter
3. Teixeira
4. Rodriguez
5. Cano
6. Swisher
7. Granderson
8. Posada
9. Martin
with Montero subbing in for both Posada and Martin. My guess is that the season will finish with Jesus starting as well.
Other good news out of Yankee camp, Montero looks the part of a big league catcher. He isnt a plus defender by any means, but he worked on his quickness in the offseason and looks more limber behind the plate. There is growing optimism within the scouting community that he actually could pull off being a big league catcher on a regular basis. His arm was never a question, it was his blocking skills that were always in question. If Montero does prove to be a pro defender, then we might see Austin Romine traded during the season. He's my pick for bounceback minor league player as he played in an abysmal environment for hitters and posted obscene away splits vs terrible home splits. In Scranton, he should bounce back to .300BA and double digit homer production. My guess is he will be the lead in a deal for a pitcher
