  1. he is never healthy. And with Papi DHing, there is no spot for Sweeney.
  2. I know. I dont like this. We could have done worse, but I dont like it.
  3. Sounds like Mahay is close. 2 yrs 7 mil is what is being reported right now, although it may not be finalized for a week or so due to the holiday. Like I said, not terribly enthused when we have some young arms that could do the trick, but we could have done worse.
  4. I like this move. Eiland is familiar with the kids and I find that there isnt just a coincidence in the fact that Hughes improved when Eiland came to the bigs in September. He knows the arms that will be parading through the pen and rotation and would be best prepared for our forced youth movement in the staff arsenal.
  5. I dont like the idea of Mahay simply because this is the first yr in which he dominated lefties vs righties. Plus, he's 36 and would also require a 3 yr deal. I'd really like it if someone swooped in and nabbed him. We are also looking at Linebrink. While I think he is intriguing, he would cost a 1st rounder (if offered arb) and he has now had 2 yrs of 1.3 WHIP performance guy in declining fashion. I dont think locking this guy in for 3-4 yrs is good either. I'd much rather keep Gascan, and fill the rest of the pen with some of the live arms we have down on the farm.
  6. This is per Olney's blog, for which requires insider and I dont have that anymore. Either way, I read a cut and pasted version on another site. Nothing definitive, but he would fill the need.
  7. That wouldnt get it done. Crisp's value is not terribly high, both because of his regression on the offensive side of the ball and due to Boston's lack of need for him. You can quote all the defensive bibles in the game, nothing changes the fact that he is a light hitting, no armed, solid range CFer. Lester is a #3 starter at his best and continues to prove that he puts too many baserunners on to be a top of the rotation guy. And while Youkilis would be a desirable, he is still not a highly rated 1b due to his lack of power and the fact that he has now been away from 3b for 2 yrs makes it highly unlikely that he'd make a smooth transition back (although a move to third significantly increases his value). As has been stated before, a CFer would be a must. Also, a top rated prospect/major leaguer will need to go to the Twins as well. As I have said before, the yankees deal needs to start with either Hughes, Chamberlain or Cano and include Melky. Your deal needs to start with Pedroia, Buchholz or Papelbon (not likely) and also include Ellsbury or Crisp depending on who else is going the other way. No discounts will be had here. And knowing that the yankees and sox are involved, this one could go rather high in terms of talent going back to Minny.
  8. Bonds crime was lying on the stand in a courtroom. His steroid usage is of poor judgement, but lets be honest here. The guy is also a scumbag and that has to play into it. At the same time, do you honestly think that Jeter has a clue what a 1040 form is? He probably has never even touched one.
  9. Kerry Wood is not a guy you go out and get if you need pen help. Think about it. The sox have a 3 headed monster in the pen with paps/oki/manny. Throw in the likelihood that Timlin is coming back and the probability that Lopez has a spot and you have 5 guys taking up spot. Then factor in that Tavarez is back and there are 6 spots right there. With guys like Hansen, Hughes, and others waiting, and with the fact that 4 of your pitchers are considered innings eating kinds of starters, what is the utility in locking up 7 spots in the pen in the event that you want to go to 14 position players and only 11 pen arms. If I were the sox, Wood would be so far from my mind, that I would let some other team take the chance. Consider that he stays healthy, he will need work to be useful and effective. And how much work will he get when the bridge from the 6th on is set? And if he comes in and eats a spot away from a NR invitee, how much would that benefit you should he go down? Essentially, the only way to take on Wood and be benefitted by him would be to get him and use him a lot. And a team like the sox doesnt need to do that.
  10. Laird would be a good righty half of a platoon. I think he proved that he doesnt have the ability to be a full time guy, hence he wont be the catcher of the future, but he sure does have a nice skill set for a backup. You could do worse than getting a solid defensive catcher with righty power for Fenway for a CFer who has declined since he left the Jake.
  11. Coco still needs to be dealt, most likely for pen help.
  12. I happen to agree. And for a steady presence in the lineup and lockerroom, he is getting close to market value.
  13. Not yet. The yankees and ARod are negotiating the amount of revenue ARod would get from a HR chase in the event he was to make it close to Bonds.
  14. This according to the Bergen Record. Expect it to be official today through the MLB. As much a SNAFU as his deal is, it allows us to move Joba back to the rotation, which might be the most important aspect of this deal.
  15. Man. Well, I think you are accustomed to being embarassed, so here goes... One good month? May- .301BA .871OPS July- .345BA 1.146OPS August- .333BA .843OPS April he was out with the hammy and September he was hurt with the knee. The only month that he was healthy and sucked was June (.252BA .707OPS) In terms of his hitting chart.. http://mlb.mlb.com/stats/individual_player_hitting_chart.jsp?c_id=nyy&playerID=425686&statType=1 If you notice, his singles and doubles were spread out almost totally evenly. His HR were all pulled. That could be due to him having a weak lower half or totally due to park effect (I only looked at Yankee stadium). Regardless, he goes the other way a lot more than Giambi does.
  16. This really is a non-story. He isnt facing jail time, and this will most likely be fixed by lawyers or by writing a check.
  17. It remains to be seen what Pettitte will do. Pettitte is the key. Without him, Hughes is our 2 and that isnt how you break in a 21 yr old. If you have a top 2 of Wang and Pettitte, then the other 3 can go through their rookie inconsistencies without too much detriment to the team.
  18. I think the yankees were prepared to offer a major deal regardless and I wont for one reason think that Boras didnt have a hand in this. But with the recent news about Kenny Rogers severing ties from Boras, then you have to at least think twice about it. Boras is all about the big dime, not necessarily the interests of the players or their best fit. I think Boras got a little ahead of himself with his expectations and ARod went along with it initially. But with the fact that the market dried up and ARod coming out with egg on his face from the breaking news during the WS, I think he figured he had to do something before his best and most lucrative option dried up.
  19. Trading Matsui does us no good. Remember, the guy was hitting .300 with 20 bombs when he started having knee problems. His knee has been cleaned out and if he comes back healthy, which isnt a lock btw, then he will likely be a .290-.300 hitter with 25+ bombs as per his usual.
  20. ARod went through Warren Buffett apparently.
  21. and to be totally honest with you, I think Giambi has another big yr this yr. But we should hide his glove and teach Matsui how to play 1b. He was on pace for a big yr into the first week of May when he initially got hurt. Then he tore it on a homer and just wasnt the same. Foot injuries like that can take upwards of a yr to heal and if he is totally healthy for his contract yr, he could be a high .900OPS guy again.
  22. that's a good point. I hadnt thought of that angle.
  23. ARod is a dick. Regardless, he is probably the best player in the game and we get to watch him finish his career in NY, and maybe he will reclaim the HR record from the roided out f*** called Barry. And if he puts in another yr like last yr, most will forget his ridiculousness.
  24. my point is that his boyfriends might not enjoy the idea of him having raisin size nads.
  25. Carter is a lefty and he is a butcher in the field.
