  1. I dont offer Matsui arbitration since he just was dropped from B to no status. But I definitely offer Damon arbitration. Boras is trying to drum up interest in Johnny for a 3-4 yr deal. Good luck. I'd sign Matsui to a 1 yr deal with a vesting option for yr 2 and then part with Johnny while nabbing the draft picks
  2. He's different than Contreras. Contreras had great stuff, but he was already close to what he would eventually become. He was just a head case in NY. Chapman is a rough, rough arm, but has some of the best tools you will find on a left handed pitcher. This is the charge of the farm system. If you can control his 102mph FB and his slider, then you could have a left handed ace for a long, long time. Its a risky proposition
  3. Its always in flux. But remember, Vtek needs to take another pay cut and this time, a playing time cut. This is what he is mulling. Is it worth it to return to Boston as a backup for $3 mil or can he get close to that on the open market while being a starter.
  4. And he asked them to go up to 8yrs $180 mil and they balked. The point is, Theo, Henry and Co. had the chance to close the deal for something similar to what they were already offering. They walked away. I am not spreading lies here. This seems to be the consensus. I am not saying that the sox should or shouldnt have ponied up, I am just reciting the consensus argument here.
  5. I did not prove your point at all. Boras, saying what he said, would not win the favor of Boston's ownership if he was spreading lies. Especially when there is another viable option on the table for Boston
  6. A contract is not a 10 yr contract if it involves 8 guaranteed yrs and 2 very difficult to vest options. Its an 8 yr contract with 2 option yrs. And think about it. Tex is 29 right now after yr 1. He'd be 36 after yr 8. Do you really think he'd have his options picked up if god forbid, his options didnt vest? Also, players cannot have options vest for performance, only for durability. So it was likely a games played clause, which Tex has no control over. He took the extra 10 million dollars guaranteed because he does not know if he will have an injury problem come the end of his contract. Its a security issue.
  7. ABSOLUTELY. He wants to sell Holliday to Boston enough to perk up Cashman's ears. Any bidding war between Boston and NY causes extreme giddiness for the player
  8. Putting Wake in the rotation from the season's inception is a bad, bad move. They need a third reliable starter or this thing is gonna collapse.
  9. You arent turning him around and trading him this offseason. That is just stupid talk. He is a buy low player with a high upside. Right now, he is the buy low guy. You dont buy low on a player than sell them when their value is still low.
  10. As is anyone here. But at least my speculation has some sense to it. If Boras throws Henry and Co under the bus when what really happened was Boras offered a ridiculously outlandish deal, then dont you think there would have been some sort of leaked retort by now? The fact that nobody in the sox FO is condemning his comments is an indictment that maybe Boras is speaking the truth.
  11. I think Varitek is trying to gauge his market and see if he can reasonably expect more PT while potentially making close to or more cash.
  12. Dye in a platoon is a waste. The guy has enough of a track record to get a 2+ year deal as a starter. I highly doubt he signs on to be the righty portion of a platoon.
  13. I would definitely inquire, but I wouldnt go overboard. Halladay is an awesome pitcher, but we do not need to empty the farm for him, and we would really need to empty the farm.
  14. Dispute it. Come on. Go for it
  15. I find it highly unlikely that Boras would come out with that comment if it wasnt reasonable. There is a reason. If his offer was truly outlandish, then I would assume the sox ownership would be quick to "leak" some info to the media about what the actual offer was. The fact that nothing from Boston's brass has been "leaked" seems to indict Henry and the rest. I believe the sox went to 165 mil over 8 yrs. I believe that Boras asked them to go to 8yrs 180mil and the sox balked. This idea comes from the readings of all the speculation and the people in the know. 15 mil was a big enough deal for Boston to walk away.
  16. I just dont see a Halladay to Boston deal. I dont see it. And if it happens, I highly doubt he signs with one yr left on his contract.
  17. Wells, I have read nothing on Holliday and the sox. Nothing. Everything I am reading is on the full court press Theo is trying to put on for Bay to re-sign. Also, you really feel comfortable with DiceK, Buch, and Wake as the back 3? Good rotations have 3 reliable pitchers. I can see Lester being reliable. Beckett is semi-reliable with his health being his only detractor. But the other three are not reliable at this time. You need one more starter who can give you 200IP. If you dont get that, you arent coming close to the AL East title.
  18. Twitter is such a crappy newssource, but its news nonetheless. Apparently the yankees are hot on the heels of Lackey
  19. Right, but the .350OBP is solid and all, but a leadoff hitter should get on base more than that. The steals are really nice, but you cannot steal first. Gotta get on to be a pest. The sooner Ellsbury learns the the better.
  20. His sinker was the best pitch parlayed from a starting pitcher in the AL East. That's not rocket science. He threw one pitch 85% of the time and won 38 games in 2 yrs with sub 4ERAs. Thats impressive. His slider and change were league average or worse, but they were improving at the time of his injury. All of that is moot now. Blowing out your shoulder is bad. Guys never come back with the same stuff as before. Its always either recurrent injury from here on out, or less velo, or less control, or less movement. Wang didnt have a large amount of reserve either way. If he's throwing 90-92mph even with his awesome sink, then he's gonna get hit. If he's throwing 95-96 without the great sink, then he'll get pounded. His room for error is nil. He needs to have that biting sink at low to mid 90s velocity or he becomes a pinata.
  21. You'd have to, nobody is getting him
  22. He's a Boras client. He went to the highest bidder. Its only logical. The sox had him at his home. All they had to do was reach a threshold that NY was willing to meet. Also, Tex's value per fangraphs (per mlbtraderumors) was $25 mil. So, the yankees actually got some value from yr 1 for what they paid for him
  23. Ellsbury seems to be caught in a transition offensively. I think he is a solid player right now, but he is actually worth less than he was during the first 2 months of 2008. I dont think teams fear him enough to try and get him to chase, so it has changed his mindset to being aggressive rather than waiting for his pitch. He has really good plate coverage, but his aggressiveness at the dish would actually be a detriment to him. If he can get to the .370OBP range regardless of his power or his BA, he will be a serious asset
  24. My god, the payroll argument is all you got? How bout this, if your team ponied up to get Tex instead of letting $1.2 million per yr get in the way then your team might be holding the trophy. The payroll argument is moot. We all are agreeing that they have a financial advantage. Doesnt mean the parade and the trophy and the banners mean any less.
