  1. A lot. Even though he is out of shape and has the rep of being a crappy teammate, he is one of the best hitters in the game and he's under 30. It would take a ton of talent, so much so that it wouldnt be worth it.
  2. There should be no hamstringing of payroll in Boston. They are WAY below where they were in 2007 (werent they somewhere in the 165 mil range?). As it stands right now, they could probably spend 50 mil per season this offseason and be right around their highest water mark. Uggla is an arb eligible guy, likely to command somewhere in the neighborhood of 8 mil this upcoming yr. Plus, he's under control for 2 more yrs. You dont pass that up based on payroll, especially in Boston
  3. There wouldnt be a need for one season, but should they happen upon a favorable deal for him, he would be an upgrade over the current Lowell/Youk combo
  4. Then so be it. Uggla at 1b and Youkilis at 3b. Hence why I said a Youk/Uggla combo. I didnt specify which position they would be in
  5. Gary Sanchez opened eyes in Instructs this yr. Scouts were raving about his defensive capabilities first and foremost. As a 16 yr old, he showed incredibly advanced footwork, blocking skills and a cannon for an arm. As a hitter, some of the scouts had reported that he is more advanced at this juncture than Jesus Montero was. Sanchez is likely to start in the GCL for 2010 and will make his long season debut in 2011. His ETA is 2013 or thereabouts. But if he truly has Montero's offensive potential as well as a strong defensive skillset right now, he might be one of the best INTL signees of the past few years. I really like this kid.
  6. VA, I dont think anyone is absolutely against him being on the roster. Hell, if I were a sox fan, I would want him to be in uniform. I just find it a bit concerning to sign him if the intention is for him to start for a full season. Its pretty obvious that he cannot do that at this stage of his career.
  7. And Uggla/Youkilis combo would provide better D than a Youk/Lowell one. Also, Uggla has put up 27HRs or more in all 4 of his seasons, playing in a ballpark that is less forgiving to righties than Fenway. He has also seen his walk totals rise every yr in the league to a total of 92 last yr. And, he's 6yrs younger and healthy. So Dipre, while the OPS difference is negligible from just a stats standpoint, a move to Boston for Uggla would absolutely move Lowell out of his position, assuming the only position he could play was 1b or 3b in Boston
  8. Couple things from mlbtraderumors.... Everyone expects the Chapman signing to come down to NY vs Boston. The range has dimmed considerably, though, since his workouts. Sounds like his makeup needs work, but then again, he's a 21 yr old kid who just fled a communist regime and everything he has ever known. Understandable. And his control is questionable at best right now. But, he does throw 102mph and he does have a plus slider. So teams are gonna salivate at that. My prediction on Chapman is interesting though. I think NY goes with the known commodity and gets Lackey. I think the sox nab Aroldis for a 5 yr contract at $35 million with incentives that get him to the $60 million range his agent is asking for.
  9. ARod got his contract for a few reason. #1- when he is clicking, he is still a top 5 player in the game, and likely top 3 with Pujols and Mauer. #2- Both Pujols and Mauer will be checking in over the $25 mil per yr mark should they hit the FA market. #3- ARod has the best chance of anyone of taking over Bonds' record, and even though ARod is considered a flake, fraud what-have-you, it is still a lot more palatable to have him as the HR leader than Bonds.
  10. Hold up there SCM. First off, the sox cannot offer anything to Matsui for another week or so. Free agents are the property of their respective teams until 15 days post-WS. So the sox may be preparing one, but they arent allowed to offer one yet. Secondly, that article was from a Japanese newspaper. No doubt, it is an attempt to drum up more interest from the Yankees POV. Third, it makes no sense from a sox position. Matsui can still play the OF, IMO, but he cannot be counted on to be a regular LFer. That is what he'd be in the sox lineup. So it doesnt make much sense
  11. And Cashman is trying to re-implement Michael's plan. You truly have no idea how big of a change the yankee farm has undergone. It went from the worst farm system in the game when we were trying to get RJ to now one of the top 10 in the game. And in a yr, I expect they will be top 5. That is how you build a dynasty. Anyone can win one with a hot year. But the perpetual inflow of talent on the trade, FA and minor league market keeps your franchise alive and can potentially lead to a dynasty. Hughes, Joba, Robertson and the like is just the beginning. The position players are coming soon and there are a lot more really solid pitching prospects in the wings. In a yr, you will see just how strong this farm system is. But it has taken awhile to build.
  12. Well, Damon was a warrior and was a great asset to our team. But we saw as the yr went along and especially in the post-season that his loss of speed has turned him into one of the worst OFers I have seen in a long time. And I have seem some terrible OFers. Damon was never one to run good routes. But he had the speed to play a decent CF in his prime. As a LFer, his route-running was even worse, but he once again had the speed to make him an average LFer. But this yr, with all the injuries to the legs that he sustained, he was just slower out of the break and a step or two slower when tracking the ball. When your speed goes from good to above average but the route-running and arm are both abysmal, it makes for a terrible OFer. If he is retained, it cannot be as an everyday LFer. His time in the OF is done.
  13. The Red Sox didnt buy 2004 or 2007? Now the second and third highest payrolled WS champs of all time. And, prior to 2004, the sox added Schilling for a pittance and prior to 2007, the sox signed Lugo, Drew, and DiceK. Don't fool yourself. The only teams in recent memory that didnt "buy" their way to a WS are the Angels of 2002, the Marlins of 2003, and the Cardinals of 2006 to some extent.
  14. BTW, this is just the tip of the iceberg. This new facility is becoming a cash cow and they finally get a reprieve from profit sharing. They also have been hemorrhaging funds into their minor leagues and are starting to build from within enough to fill some holes internally and buy enough draft and INTL FA depth to be relevant in the trade market again. Their minor league system is already a top 10 system at this juncture. In a yr, they will be in the top 3-5 assuming they do what they did last yr (strong draft then pick their favorite INTL FA and sign him for big money). If you thought the yankees were buying baseball championships, you will be blown away by their capability over the next 5-10 yrs.
  15. friend? Have you seen some of our fights? We just happen to be happy that our team won the WS. I am just happy that it happened with the current hierarchy in place so he can eat it.
  16. It is getting hard to wade through the sea of personal attacks to get the actual points anymore.
  17. Two useless defensive catchers on the roster. The basepaths might need to be degreased after games.
  18. Joba was the real deal too. The fact is, guys who are entering what you hope is their first full yr in the rotation will have their ups and downs. You have no idea what to expect from Buchholz and neither do the sox. Matsuzaka and Wakefield fit into that category because of injury. You need 3 guys who you can pencil in for 30+ starts prior to the season. Yes, one of them might get hurt and one or all of the question marks can come up roses, but you cannot bet on that from day 1, especially a big market team. NY learned that lesson in 2009. The sox should too
  19. BTW, ARod needs to lose the fedora. He looks like someone in full blown AIDS
  20. You are right, anyone can buy one. See every yankee championship and 2004 and 2007.
  21. I was planning on putting a yankee one up too, but I have been moonlighting a lot lately and havent put the full effort forth
  22. But by there being no response from Boston's FO, it makes it sound like Boras is being genuine. If he had an outlandish offer and is running a smear campaign, then why wouldnt Theo, Henry or an unidentified leak deny his claims?
