I will say this...if we get Broxton, Billingsley and Loney/Kemp, which is the idea scneario IMO in any Manny to Dodgers trade, this team will be very good in 2008. Schilling and Wake will be gone but: Beckett, Matsuzaka, Papelbon, Billingsley, FA. Thats a real good rotation, if everything pans out. The offense would be pretty poor this year, but if we get Loney, he'd play 1st, Youk at 3rd, Pedroia at 2nd, Lugo at SS, an outfield of Pena, Coco and Drew, and Papi. Not a bad offense, definitely in the upper half of the AL. We would also have our closer for years to come in Jonathan Broxton.
If we get Peavy and Gonzalez, as is the latest "proposal" on ESPN.com's Rumor Central, we would have the best rotation in baseball this year, almost without a doubt. Schilling, Peavy, Matsuzaka, Beckett and Papelbon...that would get us into the playoffs without Manny. Gonzalez is a guy whose name I heard floating around last off-season as a possible first baseman. He is 24, and last year he posted a .304/24/82 campaign with a
.862 OPS (higher than Adam Dunn). He would play 1st and quite possibly bat cleanup. He is no Manny, I know, but who knows, he could keep developing and post numbers that will make us forget Manny.
I do NOT want to trade Manny, but those are the two options if we do (it seems), and I would not hate either of them.
