Ellsbury boasted a nine-game hitting streak after hitting safely in all but one game this season. He was held hitless in the Arizona Fall League opener Oct. 10. The 23-year-old center fielder has been especially hot of late, going 7-for-12 with two runs scored and an RBI in a three-game span. He is batting .318 with two RBIs, seven runs scored and four stolen bases in 10 games. On Monday, Ellsbury was selected to play in the inaugural Rising Stars Showcase game. The game will be played Friday at Surprise Stadium. West Oahu CaneFires LHP Ryan Phillips -- Phillips has not appeared in a Hawaii Winter League game since his Oct. 10 start against Waikiki. He tossed four hitless innings in his first two starts. The 22-year-old fanned seven and walked two over four innings. C John Otness -- The 25-year-old hit safely in four straight games for a .259 average. Despite the streak, Otness has not driven in a run since his three-RBI day on Oct. 10. He has five runs scored and three RBIs in eight games. LF Jeff Corsaletti -- The Tallahassee native remained mired in a deep slump. The former sixth-round pick went hitless over eight at-bats and his average fell to .071 (2-for-28). The 23-year-old has seven runs scored and two RBIs in nine games. Peoria Javelinas LHP Lenny DiNardo -- The 27-year-old did not yield a run in his last two outings. RHP David Pauley -- The 23-year-old made his third start Monday. He allowed one run on six hits over four innings. The 6-foot-2 righty struck out one and walked three, but did not factor in the decision. Pauley is 0-1 with a 7.36 ERA. C Dustin Brown -- The 24-year-old is 6-for-17 with an RBI in his last five games after making two starts in the first week of the season. He is batting .250 with an RBI and three runs scored. 3B Chad Spann -- The 23-year-old has cooled off at the plate after opening the AFL on fire. He went 3-for-15 with a solo homer over a four-game span. The former fifth-round pick batted .353 with a home run, eight RBIs and five runs scored in eight games. BOSTON -- John Farrell will attempt to solve the pitching problems of the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox on Monday appointed Farrell as the team's new pitching coach. Farrell, 44, had served as director of player development for the Cleveland Guardians since November 2001. He replaces Dave Wallace, Boston's pitching coach since 2004. Farrell hopes to improve a Red Sox pitching staff which ranked 11th in the American League and 26th in the majors with a 4.83 team ERA this past season. Farrell had a 36-46 record with a 4.56 ERA in 116 games as a right-handed pitcher between 1987-1996 with the Guardians, Angels and Tigers. He missed two full seasons with right elbow problems. Farrell is expected to join the Red Sox on Nov. 1.
