  1. They'll sign Varitek to a one-year deal, maybe $2 million, with a bunch of incentives if his offense improves.
  2. Haha, Baldelli is gonna wear #5! http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090107&content_id=3736388&vkey=news_bos&fext=.jsp&c_id=bos
  3. Nice move for the Sox. Haha, you think they'll give him #5?
  4. The Penny signing says to me that the team isn't interested in signing Derek Lowe or any other big name pitcher to fill the #4 spot. They still want Buccholz, Bowden, or some other prospect filling that spot at some point this year or the next. So even though I'm actually not so crazy about the Penny signing anymore because he's probably going to be mediocre, I can see where the team is going. They can still surprise us, but I think the only other thing the Red Sox will do this offseason is figure out the catching situation. I'm wondering if they brought in Bard to split playing time with Tek. Maybe part of the reason Tek hasn't played well the last few years was because he was focusing so much on the young pitchers. If he split time with Bard, maybe he could focus more on his hitting?
  5. I think Bay stands a pretty good chance to re-sign with Boston this year. If he doesn't re-sign during the season, I say the Yankees will take a look at him anyway in the off-season, but focus on Holliday. I don't know a lot about contracts, but if Bay's making $7.5 this year and Drew signed on for 5/70, I would think Bay could probably get 5/80-90? Carl Crawford could be another big name out there too. How much do you think it would take to get him?
  6. I agree. It'd be pointless to argue that Lowell is superior to Teixeira offensively. And Lowell may have intangibles, but they don't make him a better hitter. It sounds like he just wasn't interested in Boston. He wanted to be Yankee the whole time, and Boras was quoted that Teixeira didn't take the best offer financially. So if he wants to go there, let him go there. I wasn't devastated by it anyway. Disappointed, but not devastated.
  7. I'm talking about prior to now, before his contract ran out.
  8. I like the Titans because of Kerry Collins, but I dunno. Let's see how the Titans handle the Ravens D next week.
  9. That's what I was thinking in that Abreu doesn't strike me as coming cheap, and the A's are always about maximizing finances. But then I've read he may have to settle for a one-year deal, so maybe he will be cheap.
  10. I'm not crazy about the C on the jersey anyway. You put the C on a player, and all the players see it, all the fans see it, and it's harder to get rid of that player if he gets bad because, hey, he's the captain. With the Red Sox, they didn't get rid of Varitek because of how well he handles the pitching staff, but I don't think the C on the jersey made things any easier. If they want to make Pedroia the captain at some point, they should make him the unofficial captain, no C's.
  11. I've heard both Abreu and Giambi connected to Oakland. Would signing Abreu break away from Billy Beane's Moneyball philosophy though? The Giants sound interested in Manny, so maybe he goes there. D-Lowe actually rejected the Mets' offer tonight, so maybe the Sox are still in on him. The Phillies and Braves are still interested.
  12. We could see Bard filling in that last spot by the end of the year too.
  13. I was gonna say maybe Prince Fielder fits into your option A, but then he doesn't actually have a long-term deal right now. But I wonder what it would take for him. Probably too many prospects, and then Milwaukee isn't exactly out of contention even after losing Sabathia.
  14. I haven't heard about ANY other teams in the mix for Varitek, at least not seriously. If the Sox want him, they could probably sign him whenever they want. Boras won't make it easy, but in the end, he really doesn't have much leverage.
  15. The Yankees got Abreu for a steal from the Phillies in 06 too, didn't they?
  16. So it sounds like if everything works out right, Masterson, Okajima, and Ramon Ramirez could add up to be a pretty fearsome bullpen next season. If everything works out right.
  17. For half a season maybe, until Buccholz or another prospect can fill in.
  18. How about a straight up deal with Houston, giving them two prospects and Lowell for Berkman? I guess that would defeat the whole depth argument with Brad Penny though, haha.
  19. I think Theo signed Penny because he doesn't trust Buccholz enough to put him back in the rotation, and he wants Masterson backing up Papelbon. If he ends the year with a .500 record and a 4-4.5 ERA, I think it's a successful deal.
  20. Bard's out of options though, so they can't send him to AAA. It's really a tough call because Huckaby's in there too, and he has some experience with the knuckler. And to be honest, I really like all three of them and think all three could do the job. If I had to pick, I'd go with Bard, only because I see him as a possible replacement to V-Tek down the road, and I wouldn't want to lose him in the waiver process. But if Flaherty or Huckaby make it, I think the team would still benefit.
  21. No, I wasn't. You might think Sheffield is a great player on the field who pours his heart out on the field, but he's no better to me than Barry Bonds. Praise him if you want, but I just don't like him.
  22. Yeah, in a few years maybe. But I doubt that rotation beats the Sox or Yanks rotations this year.
  23. He's such a gamer he even attacks fans!!
