The plan was to acquire him and extend him immediately before he played a game -- that would all be booked as an asset acquisition cost. The asset the acquired was Porcello for 5 years.
He would be the safety net. If he can't handle that, then maybe he should have some self respect and retire.
When the job was handed to Middlebrooks, there was no safety net.
I wasn't suggesting that Ortiz play regularly or even semi-regularly in the field. We need his bat in the lineup and can't risk his health. I was using Ortiz's 1B ability as an illustration of what we can expect from Hanley, but Hanley has problems with pop-ups.
Shaw has already had significant success in a prolonged MLB stretch in 2015. He is a much different case than the case of Bradley in March 2013-- who had had no success at the MLB level.
If Shaw keeps raking like he has been this Spring, I think that it will be very difficult to keep his bat out of the lineup, unless he proves inept in the field.
I think that you were the only one here expressing a concern about roster crunch. And now you are saying that you would have no problem with it. Straw man?
He is not going to win any Gold Gloves, but he should be adequate. Ortiz is probably the better fielder at 1B, and he can catch pop ups. I have always felt that Papi's ability at 1B was underrated.
We will have plenty of holes in our rotation throughout the season whether by under performance and/or injury. I would not bet anything that Buch and Kelly can stay in the rotation and take 30 starts each. Now, with ER's knee issue our depth will be taxed right from the beginning of the season. The last thing we need to worry about is a roster crunch.
We all have our issues that we feel strongly about. Others may not share those views, and there is little chance of converting others to a point of view. That's okay. We come here to express ourselves. As long as we keep it civil, no harm done.
There is no reason except for a fan's eternal hope that comes every spring. There is no well-founded expectation that both of those things will happen.
Kelly can pitch out of the pen. If he is pitching too well to send to the pen, that will be a nice problem to have. I wouldn't worry about the number crunch being a long lasting problem. The worst case scenario is that the numbers crunch will last until the end of June when Buch hits the DL.
