Bloom has painted himself into a corner. He didn’t want to pay top $ for starting pitching and now the only unsigned quality arm is Wacha and he wants 2 years /$30 million. Good job.

There was almost no return on that contract extension. Terrible extension and completely pointless to have done it mid season for a guy that had a history of fading in the second half.

Diekman was his key pickup in the off season. He bombed. That is why it was a wash getting McGuire.

he was also removed after 5 innings and 1 hit with a low pitch count against the Angels at Fenway. That is my recollection. And I think he gave up the hit in the first or second inning.

Weaker up the middle than last year at 3 of the 4 positions defensively— 2B, SS and CF. Weaker offensively at 3 of those 4 positions - 2B, SS and C. They didn’t add a power stick which was needed. It isn’t an argument that JD and Bogey didn’t provide much power last year. They were weak in that regard in 22 and haven’t addressed it for 23. The pitching will be better only if Sale stays healthy. The rest of the staff is bottom of the rotation garbage. The bullpen couldn’t be worse and has probably improved. If the team has improved overall, I don’t see them winning more than 81 games. There are just too many glaring weaknesses.

This is shaping up as a really bad team. Extremely weak up the middle. No power bats except a guy that strikes out 50% of the time and a starting staff full of fragile arms. They will not do as well as least year.
