    Duke is okay with me. At his core he was a fan. I haven't forgotten that he was at Game 4 in St. Louis on his own dime. That showed me something.

    I miss watching that little guy every 5th day. He really spoiled us. If he gave up 3 runs in 6 innings, everyone on the message boards was discussing what was wrong with him. Now, we are happy to have one of our pitchers have an outing like that.

    IMO he's such a smart pitcher that he will be successful as he loses velocity. All he has to do is stay healthy, and he will be the Mets #1. I think they made a good bet. If he was just a pure thrower, I would have backed off beleiving that he would not be effective as his velocity dropped. Pedro in the NL can pitch at 85mph and have a low 3 ERA and 7K per 9 inning ratio. I think the only way it will be bad for the Mets will be if his arm blows out in the first 3 years. I don't think that will happen, because Pedro has a whole bunch of doctors monitoring him and he is very aware of he is very highly attuned to the signals he gets from his arm. I think he makes it through the 4 years. I think he will average at least 15 wins over the 4 years. His k's/9 will drop and his Whip will go up, but on big occassions he will still be able to resemble the Pedro of old. If I am right about this, the Mets did the right thing and the Sox blew it even if he is not the Pedro from 98-2000. As for value, look at what Millwood is getting. That's all you need to know to realize that a healthy Pedro will be worth the $.

    I could go along with that. I haven't seen this guy Marte, so I really wouldn't know if he is worth it. Hopefully, the FO will make the right decision.

    But there was no disagreement that Crisp will only play CF for 1-3 years. I call it a stop gap. You do not. After that, we have a light hitting corner OF at the expense of a guy that is a potential offensive force. Do we agree yet?

    OK, so we can agree that the entire basis for the 3 vs. 4 years was a bet on durability. I am asking, how many good years does he have to have for the Mets bet to payoff?

    Why is my happiness or lack thereof so important to you. Willie Harris will contribute to far fewer wins than anyone of the stars. He is an average bench player with no major tools or talents. His acquisition makes me neither happy or unhappy. He is a nobody, and I only hope that the team stays healthy enough that he see very little playing time. Are we so desperate to talk baseball that we will continue to debate this acquisition?

    Here's what you said: There is nothing in there about him being good. If we can agree that he is good, what does all the other stuff in your post mean. His FMV is higher for the Mets? Players usually go to the highest bidder. That's how FMV is established. The Sox didn't want to pay the price to keep a great pitcher who would go back to the NL and have an All-Star year.

    If we start the season with DaVannon in CF, I would conclude that losing Damon was a mistake. Red Sox financial statements aside, I'll be watching a much weaker team. That is my criterion for mistake.

    Oh, so you can't be a stop gap just for CF? In order to be a stopgap you have to leave the team altogether? Really? Do you have a link for this interpretation of the meaning of "stopgap?" I'm tired of taking you and JSinger to school on every post.

    He was an All-Star in his first year. If he is an All-Star in '06 would that be enough to make it a good acquisition?

    I think we know where we both stand on this. Let's not sound like broken records. In my last post, I was merely responding to the statement that he was would be blocking Ellsbury's progress. That is just not true.

    By your own words, Crisp is a stop gap for CF, and you would be sacrificing Marte's potential as an offensive force for a weak hitting corne OF. Is it so important for you to disagree with me that you will even disagree with yourself. lol!

    Griffey would play CF in 2006 and 2007 at most. In 2008 or earlier, move him to a corner or DH. This would not hinder Ellsbury's progress at all. As far as I know, there are no plans for him to make the ML roster in '06. As an asside, whether Ellsbury is a "classy young man" is irrelevant. It may be important to his agent and the club for marketing purposes, but that translates into zippo on the field. Some of the greatest players were crude, profane and totally without class, e.g. Cobb, Ruth, and to a large extent Teddy Ballgame.

    The Yankees went in a direction of youth-- Pavano who had one good year under his belt and they turned away from a proven star , Pedro. That has worked out well for them so far. Again, I'll ask the question if Pedro is an All-Star for 3 years and wins 10-12 games with a 4+ ERA in the 4th year, have the Mets made a good acquisition?

    So, you agree with me. They would be sacrificing the future, i.e., Marte, for Crisp , who is young, but he would be a stop gap until the farm yields a crop for CF.

    Lots of you think that letting Damon go was a) smart financially, and a future-looking move. While I am not going to get into a discussion of Damon's FMV, I have been concerned that it would take top prospects to fill the CF hole, thus sacrificing the future somewhat and certainly not building or preserving the future. Let's hope they don't part with two prospects. If they do, letting Damon walk was a big mistake. They should have kept the overpaid but proven Boston star until the fram kids were ready. That's when they would have enjoyed the financial savings with a seemless transition in CF. Now, we have no one in CF, and worse yet, every team knows we have no one thus driving up their price. The Red Sox are a premier franchise with a ton of expensive ML talent, so they are not going into 2006 with Stern or Harris in CF. They've got a roster that can make the playoffs, so they will not throw away the opportunity by putting a non-entity in CF. However, it is going to cost them to fill the whole. It's going to cost part of the future.

    Duh, I realize that, but there is nothing interesting about signing a bench player. There is no reason to analyze this move. He is a dime a dozen. No one puts their hard earned $ down to see Willie Harris. In fact, most fans would be disappointed if they got the game and Harris was starting instead of Loretta. I get the concept. Teams need depth on the bench, but this guy is not even a special bench player. I'd much rather have signed Jeff Davannon, who is superior to Harris in every aspect. God, do I have to be thrilled about every acquisition they make? It's just not worth the effort to discuss. Do I also have to be thrilled about the new kid from Down Under, Mate?

    He may not be the old Pedro, but you are likely to never see that kind of pitcher (i.e., '98-'00 version) in a Sox uniform in your lifetime. I am 47 years old, and I have never seen anything like that. He may not be that guy, but he is still an All-Star. With all these great arms that we have on the farm, it will be several years before any one of them becomes an All-Star. I have to disagree with you again. You take the risk on Pedro, because if he stays healthy, he is something special, even if he can't bring the '97 mph heat. He had a good year in '05. If he has a good year in '06, I have to ask you at what point is it a good acquisition for the Mets? If he is #1 ace and an All-Star for 3 years, but only wins 11 or 12 games in year 4, were the Mets stupid? My opinion would be that the Sox blew it.

    I'm not negative, but I don't get excited about players like Harris. I wouldn't equate him with Pokey, because Pokey was a defensive super-talent and I knew that about him before he came to the Sox. There is nothing extraordinary about Harris. I've seen hundreds like Harris come and go into oblivion in a blink... some may even have been named Harris. So, I am not real charged up about the acquisition. If we acquired Franco Harris, I'd be more excited.
