    I would not count on that. The FO gave Nomar a 7-year deal before he was eligible for arbitration, and it bought them no special consideration from Nomar at Free Agent time.

    I don't disagree that he has to return to prominence before he goes back to closing. I just disagree with others on this board who think he is finished.

    This is not quite fair, because Arroyo has more AB's than Wily Mo since the trade.

    His problem last year was his legs not his arm. He couldn't get any drive toward the plate and he couldn't locate. That usually equates to bad results. His legs are healthy as is his arm, so there is no reason to believe that a guy with his successful track record will not rebound.

    Foulke will be fine. Getting him back healthy will be a big addition to the 2006 Bullpen. He is still a premier pitcher.

    It's great to keep Big Papi, but by wiping out the option for 2007, they are essentially extending him for 3 years at almost 14 million per year. because the 2007 option was valued at 8.4 million. $14 million/year is full FMV.

    Foulke looked very good today. No one could make contact against him. He got on strikeout with the fastball and one with the changeup. He was hitting 88 and 89 on the stadium gun. He looked confident and very sharp. Papelbon's velocity was down about 4 or 5 clicks from the night before. On Saturday, he popped the glove several times at 97. On Sunday, he hit 94 once, but mainly was working at 92-93. On Saturday, he poured consistent strikes, but he had trouble with his coomand on Sunday.

    I love when Sterling bemoans about hitting in bad luck etc. He's going on about at'em balls, etc.,and he just gave the big Godzilla call. It's great!

    I didn't see that kind of velocity from him. There were no radar readings at the spring parks, but he was lucky if he was hitting 90. Paps was throwing so hard in the bullpen tonight that I could hear the glove popping from my seat along the RF line. I was so far from the bullpen that I could not see his number, but I knew from the glove popping that it was not Foulke. None of the relievers from either team popped the glove that loudly.

    He isn't yet. That's quite a ways off for Lester. He needs a lot of refinement, and his velocity is nothing like Paps.

    Papelbon has shown in his two appearances that he has good command of his off-speed pitches. He threw two off-speed pitches to Millar that really had him off balance. Millar was geared up for the fastball and he had it timed. The scoreboard showed the pitches as 89 mph slider, but from my perspective the last pitch looked like a splitter that dropped and Millar helplessly flailed over it. It was quite surprising that Paps came out of the pen throwing 95+ from the get go and that he had command and feel for the off-speed pitches. By time he came in the temperature had to be in the 30's. it was freezing.

    The ABs will come for Wily Mo. He'll play against most lefties. There will be injuries etc. If Jay Payton had stayed with the Red Sox last year, he would have gotten plenty of ABs in the second half.

    I think Wily Mo has been told that there is a very good chance that he will have the RF or 1B job next year, especially with Nixon in the last year of his contract. I don't think that he'll be a problem.

    Very interesting ORS. I knew the part about the illusion of rising because the harder thrown balls fall less than the eye would expect, but I did not know about the 200 mph study.

    Some physicists have also claimed that the curveball is an optical illusion, because that too was against the laws of physics. Anyone who has tried to hit them know that it is not an optical illusion. Similarly, I think the guys that faced Bob Gibson might tell you that the rising fastball is not a myth.

    It is encouraging, and he is still building arm strength.

    Foulke hit 88 on the gun. It's good to see that he is building velocity.
