    Clearly, Francona has not been managing for wins, and by the time the games are over the stars like Manny, Papi etc. are gone from the ballpark. It is much more important to see that Foulke's knees are good, and that Schilling and Beckett are healthy, and that there are surplus arms in case of injury. It has been a very optimistic Spring Training in that regard.

    I don't see that happening, and this team like last year's team is going to need to rely on the big inning. They will play for the big bombs.

    I'm not worried at all. For the first two weeks of Spring Training, they were without Ortiz and Varitek, and even after they returned the starters rarely went beyond the 5th inning. The Sox offense usually feasts on teams bullpens in the second half of games. I like Van Buren. He has reallhy good stuff and he gets lots of swings and misses. I also like guys with funky motions. It is very difficult for hitters to pick up the ball and time a herky jerky motion. With all the talking on these boards about DelCarmen and Hansen, this guy is flying under the radar, but if he dominates at AAA he may contribute at the ML level before the other two.

    I'm not calling you a liar. I am just commenting that the way Torre plays ST games is different from the way he will manage in the regular season. He might play small ball during ST to teach fundamentals to some kids, but those kids will not be in the lineup when the season starts. It's my opinion that playing small ball with this team would be a very bad mistake. I hope you are right and he hits and runs, bunts, squeezes etc, because his pitching staff is going to need more than a run or two. Pray tell, who will be laying down these squeeze bunts? Giambi? Sheffield? ARod? Matsui? Posada? Jeter with Sheffield and Arod up after him? Damon is not much for bunting. Cano has not shown much of a proficiency at bunting. Who will be asked to play small ball? I think Torre will play very, very little small ball. It won't help this team and no one in the lineup (with the possible exception of PD) does it well.

    The Championship teams were built on pitching and defense. It made sense for those teams to play small ball. This Yankee team is an offensive juggernaut with very little pitching. The Yankees are going to win games like the 2005 Sox by bludgeoning their opponents. They will not be winning 2-1 or 3-2. They are going to rely on big innings. For a team constructed like the Yanks to play small ball would not make sense. It would be like bringing a knife to a gunfight.

    Foulke has given up 2 runs but had 2 k's. Are they showing his velocity on NESN? Lowell has had three knocks today. That is very encouraging to see. I don't think the bottom of the order will be as bad as everyone is anticipating. Gonzo just needs to get going a little bit.

    Damon's wife thinks she is going to be a celebrity in NY. The sad fact is that in NY she will get lost in the crowd and not have the profile that she had in Boston. This might grate on her and cause marital discord. If she takes the Anna Benson route, Johnny's $52 million will be $26 million.

    That sounds like Clemens talking about his hamstrings after he gets lit up. He never had a bad game when he wasn't hampered by something.

    Arroyo is pitching a gem. Bottom of the 6th and he has limited the Sox to 3 hits. Of course, Coco led the game off with a single.

    It doesn't change the fact that the White Sox drought lasted 88 years.

    I guess you have no idea what a Choke is. It's being one strike away, one out away or one victory away. No team has ever been one victory away for four days in a row. No team ever in the history of the great American Pastime has experienced such a prolonged post-season choke. And it was finished off in the great cathedral-- the house built by a fat former Red Sox pitcher. BTW At least two teams have gone more than 86 years without a championship.
