Kazmir's pitch count is very high. The Rays pen will cough up tonight's game. Buchholz will be lucky to qualify for a win tonight. His pitch count is way up.

I am suspicious that this offer leaked. The Sox are pretty good about maintaining radio silence. Either the rumor is baseless or the Sox had some motive to leak it.

Drew is an underperforming ballplayer relative to his contract by any measure. Most people expected him to be better than good. He was expected to be dominant. Theo called him a National Treasure at his press conference. You are employing 20/20 hindsight. When he arrived at Red Sox camp in 2007, it was with much fanfare. They don't do that for merely "good" pitchers. Understanding why they signed him does not absolve them of their mistake. The move was heavily criticized at the time, but somehow they expected a better outcome?

I expected much more from Dice K. Didn't you? I didn't expect 5 full seasons from Drew, but I didn't expect him to be a .233 hitter in his healthiest season in years. Did you? I expected Lugo to suck. That deal was obviously a poor investment from the beginning.

I don't think his win total will be highly valued in light of the fact that he rarely gets beyond the 5th inning. If he doesn't come back strong in September, teams will not be clamoring for a guy with an 8+ ERA. If you are talking about getting back some prospects for him, that could happenn, but getting a few prospects three years into the contract would be viewed as a huge failure by management that expected to be getting a dominant pitcher in his prime. He has never approached what he was billed as.

I wish they would part ways with Wakefield, but I don't see that happening after is only All Star season.

I disagree that they would get anyone of consequence in return, and I think two decent years would be looked upon as a failure when the FO expected a dominating pitcher in his prime.

My strategy would be to lump together the major league ready pitching prospects, (i.e. Buchholz and Bowden) with Anderson. After a year and a half of Halladay, the next generation of minor league pitchers will be major league ready. If the Sox get Halladay or Lee, there is no need to hold onto Buchholz, because there would be no room for him. After a trade, next year's rotation would be Beckett, Halladay/Lee, Lester, Wakefield and Dice K. There would be no spot for Buccholz, which makes him the logical prospect to be traded.
