  1. I hope so, but the interview was concluding, and they didn't ask him about getting another bat, and they didn't ask him about Kotchman. He just made the comments without any solicitation.
  2. On WEEI today before noon, Tito said that he likes this team and he thinks its great that the defense and pitching have been improved. That was the focus of the off-season. He doesn't see the need for additional moves, and then he concluded with an unsolicited compliment for Kotchman. He said that he really liked him and that he wouldn't mind having him in the bottom of the lineup catching every ball at 1B. He went on and on about the guy without being asked about him. I almost drove off the rode. If this is an indication that Theo will wait till mid seaso to see if he needs another bat, the Yankees will bury us if we don't get another bat. If the Lowell trade goes through, essentially we will have replaced Lowell's and Bay's bats with Cameron and Kotchman. That doesn't add up to me.
  3. They can't start the season with Kotchman at 1B. He stinks-- strictly a bottom third of the order hitter. When Varitek plays, our bottom 4 would really a suck if VMart needs a rest.
  4. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/red-sox-take-aim-at-adrian-gonzalez Rosenthal reporting on the Gonzale talks
  5. Does he have the kind of speed that Ellsbury has? That speed is a hell of a weapon to lose. Was it Branch Rickey that said speed doesn't slump.
  6. The push for Gonzalez is on. http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/baseball/red_sox/view/20091216red_sox_pushing_to_obtain_padres_adrian_gonzalez/
  7. I'm all for getting another pitcher nad sending Wake out to pasture with a plaque in the Red Sox HOF, but I'd rather they get a mediocre #5 who is healthy and can take the ball every 5 days, rather than a retread who will likely be on the DL when you need him. We have had no success with those projects, none. I'd rather re-sign Byrd as Wake insurance.
  8. This is beautiful.
  9. Stop it, just stop it!! Have any of those worked out for us in recent memory? BTW: Why is this still not final? http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2009/12/15/red_sox_zeroing_in_on_5_year_deal_for_lackey/
  10. Also, there really is no other speed in the lineup. Drew runs well but is not a base stealing threat. Pedroia's speed is average. The rest are plodders except for Cameron who should be hitting down in the lineup. A slow team without a big power guy will find it very very hard to score runs consistently. It will take them 3 hits to score all the time. Mix in a few slumps along the way for the guys at the top of the order and the offense could hit some real dry spells.
  11. Do we need a glove like Cameron's in front of the Monster for 81 games. I would have preferred getting Vlad. He has enough left in his legs to play LF at Fenway.
  12. My post above is based on the current roster. I am not assuming we get Gonzalez.
  13. Ellsbury is only starting to scratch the surface with his talent. Last year he was much more consistent at the plate. He speed is a unique weapon for the Red Sox who have never had a guy like this. Every hit is essentially at least a double with his stealing ability. With Pedroia hitting behind him, he'll be standing on 3B with less than 2 out all the time for VMart. As for the lineup, against righties I think the bottom 3 will be Lowell(if he's still here), Cameron and Scutaro. Against lefties it will be Lowell, Cameron, Varitek and Scutaro. Let's not forget that the lineup will get shorter on those days when Tito finds it necessary to keep Kotchman fresh. Neither of those lineups is good enough to beat the Yankees in the regular season or the playoffs. We still do not have a reliable cleanup hitter, and the lineup will be much weaker without Bay. They need another big bat.
  14. I corrected this for you.
  15. You are right. The franchise is far richer today.
  16. It's less than we signed Manny for in 2001.
  17. If they can't land Gonzalez, do they go for Cabrera. He is probably a better hitter than Gonzalez, and he is young. I don't see Beltre as a big help with the bat. Anything is better than Kotchman at 1B.
