  1. At least Doubront is not a broken down relic like the others. He has the ability IMO, but he has to step up his game. Carlson? I do,kt remember what type of surgery he had and how far he is removed from surgery. I have spent too many decades hoping that broken down relics signed in the winter would turn back the clock and be good again. It almost never has happened.
  2. Garza and the Cubs have settled their arbitration for $9.5 million. I expect that the trade market for Garza will heat up immediately.
  3. If 2 wild card teams are added this season, there will be no pitchers available at the trading deadline.
  4. This guys is dangling like ripe low hanging fruit. Just sign the freaking guy.
  5. The Nats have a few problems. First, the have not built any sort of following. Maybe the talented players and winning will help, but curiously, in their best season 2011, they still finished 14th out of 16 in attendance. Only the Marlins and Pittsburgh were behind them. Next, is the problem that they have with their TV rights. They have a huge problem with the O's in this regard. If people don't watch them, it will be very hard for them to build a following. The traffic situation in that area is horrendous. Suburban dwellers don't go to the games. They are the people with money and families who would traditionally fill ballparks. They don't. Edit: The one thing they have going for them is that the O's stink.
  6. I was referring to baseball franchises. Supporting a team for 81 games in a 45,000 seat stadium is much different than 8 Sundays or in the case of basketball- only an 18,000 seat arena. It apples and oranges.
  7. h Miami spent a lot of money too and they are not big market either.
  8. In other words, as we used to say in Brooklyn, we're screwed.
  9. People who think that D.C. Is a big market because it is a big city and big Metropolitan area doesn't know or understand D.C. If Elk comes on here later he can speak more authoritatively about them. There is a reason why several baseball franchise have failed in DC. It is not a big sports town. There aren't enough interested sports fans in the city to support a team for 81 games in a 45,000 seat stadium. The suburban fans don't go to the games because traffic around that area maybe some of the worst traffic in the country.
  10. The O's screwed them over with regard to TV rights. They have been in litigation about it.
  11. I'd rather get Jamie Moyer out of retirement. Lannan would have a John lackey- type ERA in the ALE. He brings a salary of $5 million plus we would have to give up talent for him. Oswalt is in a diferent universe altogether-- well worth double of this guy. On Lannan, we'd be throwing away money and prospects. I'm not against trading prospects, but not for this type of player.
  12. The problem is that Washington is in search of a market. They have never been able to get a following. That's why franchises in DC keep failing. Baltimore is very close geographically and those markets overlap. The O's have stunk for several years, and that should have helped the Nats get a foothold in the market, but it hasn't. Every season they finish 13th or 14th out of 16 in attendance. Last year they played .500 ball and they had a lot of exciting players and they were still 14th out of 16. If fans don't come to watch you play and you are getting screwed over on your local TV and radio contracts, you are a small market team. They are putting on a big push to improve, and maybe they take away some O's fans this season if the O's continue to stink, but if they finish 14th in attendance again that will not be a good sign.
  13. I thought the Orioles screwed over the Nationals with regard to TV and Radio rights etc. affecting their market.
  14. Lannan's best role is probably as a swingman out of the pen-- a Darren Oliver type.
  15. Have you seen this guy pitch?
  16. Lannan can't break a pane of glass.
  17. The guy will get eaten alive in the ALE. His stuff is substandard.
