  1. I was referring to baseball franchises. Supporting a team for 81 games in a 45,000 seat stadium is much different than 8 Sundays or in the case of basketball- only an 18,000 seat arena. It apples and oranges.
  2. h Miami spent a lot of money too and they are not big market either.
  3. In other words, as we used to say in Brooklyn, we're screwed.
  4. People who think that D.C. Is a big market because it is a big city and big Metropolitan area doesn't know or understand D.C. If Elk comes on here later he can speak more authoritatively about them. There is a reason why several baseball franchise have failed in DC. It is not a big sports town. There aren't enough interested sports fans in the city to support a team for 81 games in a 45,000 seat stadium. The suburban fans don't go to the games because traffic around that area maybe some of the worst traffic in the country.
  5. The O's screwed them over with regard to TV rights. They have been in litigation about it.
  6. I'd rather get Jamie Moyer out of retirement. Lannan would have a John lackey- type ERA in the ALE. He brings a salary of $5 million plus we would have to give up talent for him. Oswalt is in a diferent universe altogether-- well worth double of this guy. On Lannan, we'd be throwing away money and prospects. I'm not against trading prospects, but not for this type of player.
  7. The problem is that Washington is in search of a market. They have never been able to get a following. That's why franchises in DC keep failing. Baltimore is very close geographically and those markets overlap. The O's have stunk for several years, and that should have helped the Nats get a foothold in the market, but it hasn't. Every season they finish 13th or 14th out of 16 in attendance. Last year they played .500 ball and they had a lot of exciting players and they were still 14th out of 16. If fans don't come to watch you play and you are getting screwed over on your local TV and radio contracts, you are a small market team. They are putting on a big push to improve, and maybe they take away some O's fans this season if the O's continue to stink, but if they finish 14th in attendance again that will not be a good sign.
  8. I thought the Orioles screwed over the Nationals with regard to TV and Radio rights etc. affecting their market.
  9. Lannan's best role is probably as a swingman out of the pen-- a Darren Oliver type.
  10. Have you seen this guy pitch?
  11. Lannan can't break a pane of glass.
  12. The guy will get eaten alive in the ALE. His stuff is substandard.
  13. It is just ridiculous, that Cherry Pie is going around making $5 million dollars offers for 1 season. Is that the standard stipend to be paid by the Sox going forward?
  14. When you look at the moves made by the Sox this off season thus far, I don't know how anyone can conclude that Benny Boy did much of anything. He inherited a team with a few holes. He has filled none of the holes and created a hole at SS.
  15. I agree. Such an approach is penny-wise and pound foolish. One more pitcher makes this a very strong team. Without that additional piece, they will be rolling the dice that a lot of things will go right. If those things don't go right and the team misses the playoffs for a 3rd straight season, it will damage the franchise. They have created this tremendous brand that has excellence as one of its hallmarks. Not making the playoffs three years in a row would hurt the brand.
  16. It is always difficult to pick up a productive starter at the trading deadline. The price in terms of prospects and talents is usually disproportionate to the 2 months of service being purchased. If they go to a second wild card team, it will be even more difficult because several more team will consider themselves as contenders and there will be more buyers than sellers.
  17. Why must you make everything a referendum on whether the FO is stupid? We can discuss their moves and the team without discussing their intelligence. The smartest people are not always the best business people.
  18. The Yankees are a much deeper team than the Sox. The Sox could get some break out performance -- namely from Bard and good health and they could make a run at the division. I haven't made my fearless predictions yet because I am hoping that our roster isn't final. When pitchers and catchers report, I'll make my predictions.
  19. Of course Bobby V is happy with the pitching. Did you see the crap staffs that he had with his prior teams. He thinks trhat he died and went to heaven.
