    They are still closer to the small market teams than the big market teams. The #23 team is only 10% less valuable than the Nats at #16. If you jump up 7 spots from the Nats, the #9 team is 33% more valuable. All the small guys are bunched together in the bottom half of the rankings. The lower you go the less difference there is in valuation between teams. Like I said earlier, there are the big boys and everyone else. In any ranking, there is always the top, middle and bottom. With regard to baseball franchises the teams in the middle are much closer to the bottom than the top. There is a lot of bunching in the bottom 20. One thing is certain is that they are not a big market team. The Nats could turn things around, but they will have an uphill battle generating a loyal following. IMO their problems are not solvable merely by building a winning team.

    paps sucked in 2009? Your standards are very high. Don't you remember what 9th innings were like before Papelbon? With the exception of 1 year of Keith Foulke, they were very frightening. Even in his 1 good year Foulke blew 7 saves. By comparison, Paps had only 3 blown saves in 2009. And doesn't the 5th spot in the rotation matter? Who will that be?

    Nursing home? Big talk from a guy that plays baseball in a wooden shoe league. So you are not gloom and doom. Good for you, but I am sure that if Oswalt gets signed you will be saying that we never should have doubted Ben Cherry. If that happens, we will both be happy. I'll be happy, because Ben will fill a need that I have gone on record about, and you will be happy even though you didn't think we needed him.

    That remark might have started the discussion, but almost the entire argument was about whether the Nats were a large market team. Read the thread. If you want to create some baseball middle class, fine, but I never really read about this mid market. In baseball, there are the big boys (Yanks, Mets, Boston, White Sox, Cubs,Angels, Dodgers) and everyone else.

    Finishing 16 out 30 on Forbes list of MLB franchises doesn't mean that they are not a small market team. There are many more small market teams than big market teams. After the top echelon of teams, the market values of the rest are probably not hugely divergent, so an argument could be made that there are 2 categories-- Big market and small market teams. Are you on a mission to build a middle class in baseball? I'm not sure the point that you are trying to make. I thought the argument/discussion was with regard to whether the Nats were a big market team? Clearly, they are not.

    At least Doubront is not a broken down relic like the others. He has the ability IMO, but he has to step up his game. Carlson? I do,kt remember what type of surgery he had and how far he is removed from surgery. I have spent too many decades hoping that broken down relics signed in the winter would turn back the clock and be good again. It almost never has happened.

    Garza and the Cubs have settled their arbitration for $9.5 million. I expect that the trade market for Garza will heat up immediately.

    If 2 wild card teams are added this season, there will be no pitchers available at the trading deadline.

    The Nats have a few problems. First, the have not built any sort of following. Maybe the talented players and winning will help, but curiously, in their best season 2011, they still finished 14th out of 16 in attendance. Only the Marlins and Pittsburgh were behind them. Next, is the problem that they have with their TV rights. They have a huge problem with the O's in this regard. If people don't watch them, it will be very hard for them to build a following. The traffic situation in that area is horrendous. Suburban dwellers don't go to the games. They are the people with money and families who would traditionally fill ballparks. They don't. Edit: The one thing they have going for them is that the O's stink.
