  1. I just checked his career stats. I'd rather that they invited Bill Lee to camp. Will they start throwing the likes of Ohlendorf and Silva out there so we start to be for Wakefield?
  2. For those who were at Spring Training to watch them go through the motions with almost no enthusiasm and certainly no hard work, most believe that there was a carryover effect, especially in light of the lackluster play in the first two weeks. The Rays slow start has nothing to do with the causality of the Red Sox slow start.
  3. Everyone talks about how the Sox were the best team in baseball in the middle of the season and that the collapse was an aberration that would be unlikely to repeat itself. For those of you who think that, you should be reminded that the collapse repeated itself during 2011-- they set a team record for a poor start and they set a record for a poor September. Do you really think that history can't repeat itself? It sort of already did.
  4. Doji, Please tell us what there is to like about this move.
  5. The Sox should probably put in a call to Fisk to have him visit camp. He'd give Bobby V some forceful backup on this new program.
  6. Prices are up this year. It's very difficult to find discounts.
  7. I'll be down there from the 17th - 24th. I will try to stop by when I arrive.
  8. Pitchers and catchers report on Sunday. Wakefield and Varitek have still not retired. I wonder if they will report on Sunday. Reports were that Wakefield would make his decision last week. Does no announcement signifies that he will come to camp. There are no reports that either of them have rejected the minor league deals.
  9. Who would you pitch to?
  10. Salty is adequate at best. His defense stinks. Too many throws into CF. His release is almost as slo as the 40 year old Varitek's release. He can't catch the ball. Wakefield is not to blame for all of his passed balls. He doesn't block balls well. He's no Varitek catching the ball and blocking the plate. Varitek's weakness was his throwing release which became glaring over the last few seasons. Other than that, he did everything very well behind the plate, and I never saw a catcher block the plate better. His left leg was like a concrete pillar. Salty doesn't do anything well behind the plate, and the jury is still out on how he handles the pitching staff. As for his hitting, he hits like a catcher. It's a weak pool. My fear this season (to connect up with the topic of this thread) is that he will not improve offensively in 2012 and Ortiz will not see any pitches because of it. With the bottom of the Sox order, someone needs to step up or pitchers will pitch around Ortiz from day 1. They'd have to be idiots to let Ortiz hurt them with Salty, Aviles, Sweeney, and Ross hitting behind him.
  11. I don't think they are expecting Bard to be Roger Clemens, but I do think that they expect some consistency and and innings. Sure that will come with bumps. I think we have to acknowledge that he might have more than a few bumps. There is the risk that it could be a train wreck for him like it was in the minors. I don't think it will be a train wreck, but we just can't be certain, because there is no track record for success as a starter. If he were to implode they would have to remove him from the rotation and put him back in the pen. I think the Sox are putting him in the rotation for 2 reasons. First, there are 2 openings due to injury, but equally as important is that Bard has requested the opportunity to start. I don't know how much they believe in his prospect for success.
  12. I guess this will eliminate their consideration for Manny.
