  1. Well he was brutalized by the fans when he left, and it really was unfair. He played extremely hard for the Sox and he was a huge part of the 2004 team. The FO made no attempt to keep him. That is not his fault.
  2. Padilla looked bad today. Except for Aceves, the candidates for the #5 spot have not looked good at all.
  3. Oswalt is warming up in his backyard.
  4. Should the Sox take a flyer on him? He's still better than Sweeney is. He can still run and provide an offensive spark.
  5. Maybe he's starting to get the itch already. Wait until he is home for another few weeks.
  6. Doubront will make the staff one way or another, because he is out of options. Even if he doesn't make the rotation out of camp, he will get the ball for starts if/when Padilla flames out. Aceves is still my pick to lock down the 5th spot. I will be leaving for Fort Myers a week from tomorrow. I will report back while I am there.
  7. Doubront did not do well at all. So far Aceves has looked the best for the last slot, but it is very early. Silva is out of the picture with a bad shoulder. Cook and Ohlendorf have bad shoulders, but say they feel fine. I have to think that the competition is among Aceves, Padilla and Doubront. A couple of more outings like yesterday and Doubront will eliminate himself from consideration.
  8. He didn't pitch too many games for the Sox. It could be the same game.
  9. Papelbon is still my favorite bullpen guy of all-time. I don't care what he says. The Sox didn't want him. That's not his fault.
  10. My bet is that Oswalt will sign with the Cardinals as soon as Wainright experiences a setback.
  11. Quite often in baseball there are game changers-- guys who come out of nowhere or from modest success to be game-changing stars. In 1967, it was Lonborg. He went from a guy with potential to a fierce ace pitcher. In 1972, Luis Tiant came from being buried deep in the Red Sox bullpen to be the team ace and lead the league with a sub-2 ERA. In 1975, two rookies, Lynn and Rice hit the scene as rookies who were top MVP candidates. In 1986, Clemens became the ace that he remained for 15+ years. Bard could be that game-changer in 2012. If he does, that will propel this team. Hey, I can dream... right.?
  12. As much as Valentine would like to bring Iggy north. I don't think that they want to put a lot of pressure on him if he is not ready. Also, it would force their hand to dump Aviles or Punto. I think they will wait until Iggy plays his way to the big leagues or one of the other 2 gets injured.
  13. I looked at the stats one time. The proposition that the CS percentage being lower with Wake on the mound was not true historically. That's my recollection.
  14. Salty's footwork looked better on Sunday than I remember. Little tweaks like that can make a big difference. Bobby V is great at picking up stuff like that. There's not much they can do about the fact that he doesn't catch the ball well.
  15. There was one vote in this poll for "other.". I am curious whether that person had a particular pitcher in mind.
  16. So with Silva out of the mix, Aceves, Padilla, Doubront and Cook remain to compete for the 5th spot. Cook is cooked. He has more physical problems than Silva. Aceves is the best of the rest, but we really need him more in the pen. I hope Doubront can take a big step forward, because Padilla is a walking MASH unit. Last year, he had arm and neck surgeries.
  17. We can live with these 2 guys at catcher. If one of them flops or gets injured, Lavarnway is waiting in the wings. The biggest issue for this team wll be the way the pitching falls into place.
  18. In the poll about the 5th starter coming north, there were 25 votes and no one picked Silva. Everyone was right about that.
  19. No, because eggs can't come and that is a scientifically provable truth.
