  1. it was always obvious that the trade was first and foremost a salary dump. They got 3 All Star quality players without giving up their top hitting or pitching prospect. LA included nothing but players for which they had no future use and just enough tht it didn't look like we sold the players.
  2. It remains to be seen whether they will be useful to us beyond De La Rosa becoming a reliever. Getting one reliever for AGon, Beckett, and Crawford for one guy that might be a reliever is a salary dump. That's pretty obvious.
  3. Two of the four players that we got from LA have been dumped. Two are left. It's starting to look more and more like a salary dump where we got just enough in return that the Commissioner would let it go through. We never wanted any of those guys, except De La Rosa who is probably a reliever.
  4. Cervelli is trash.
  5. Brock Holt? I didn't see that coming. I was really hoping for Garett Jones. Good riddance to Melancon. What a turd! Ben thought his career was emerging, but it was about to submerge. Maybe he'll be a useful MIR guy for the Pirates. You don't use valuable trade chips to get a MIR guy.
  6. Of the guys you mentioned, only morales could be counted on to be depth in 2013. The others will be either purely short relievers or minor league starters with very little chance of being anything other than emergency starters.
  7. DLowe may not be the answer. I would not argue that he is the answer, but our rotation is thin and not very strong and there is no depth.
  8. Williams was in a class by himself as a hitter. He was beyond being a generational hitter. Generations have passed and no one has come close to being as good as the Splid Splinter. The only point that I was making was that Miggy like Stan the Man is not at the top of everyone's mind because he suffers from not being in a media capital. If DiMaggio can be in a discussion with Williams, Musial must also be considered, because he was a better hitter than Joe D. Miggy can be compared favorably with any hitter on any day.
  9. Who else could be the centerpiece?
  10. I am not quite sure what to make of this.
  11. Lillibridge has way more talent than Nava, plus he can play IF and OF, and he had Zero trade value. The guy we got is a 26 old non- prospect. Maybe someday if he is lucky he will be an emergency arm for a depleted pen on the Pawtucket shuttle. Nava could not even net us this type of player in a trade. He's certainly not going to entice the Pirates to add Garret Jones to the Hanrahan deal.
  12. Musial was a more complete player than Williams. He was an excellent fielder and base runner too. Williams was not a good base runner and his fielding was just adequate. Edit: The debate has always been DiMaggio vs. Williams, because they played in the bigger media market. Musial belongs in the debate. He was a better all around player than Williams, and he was versatile playing 1st and OF at an excellent level. He was a better hitter than DiMaggio. Williams was the best hitter of the 3, but he was one dimensional compared to the other two. They were the 3 giants of the generation, but you hear very little about Musial.
  13. Any interest in DLowe for depth?
  14. Lillibridge was thrown in because he was going to get cut when they added Youkilis. We took him to make it look like we got a return. He had no value. Neither does Nava.
  15. Merry Christmas, Fred!
  16. people probably don't think of Miggy, because he has played in Florida and Detroit. Stan the Man played when there were only 8 teams in each league and yet he was still underrated in the press which paid much more attention to joe D and Teddy Ballgame. Musial was their equal, but largely ignored by people who do not come from the Midwest. Hank Greenberg was a giant of the game, but not from the east coast media Mecca.
  17. It looks like that. What's next, arguing current pitching terms like whether a guy' s stuff is "filthy" or "electric".
  18. Nava has zero trade value.
  19. It's silly to argue over these terms which are themselves just part of current day popular parlance. Ten or twenty years from now we will be using different terms. Miggy is pretty great and he would be a top hitter in any generation. He is the best hitter in the game right now without question, and he's in his prime. He may be better than Manny, and he doesn't have the stigma of PEDs.
  20. Have there been reports that Cherries is interested in Kubel?
  21. I am sure that the can sign him, but why sign him if he has a condition that would prevent him from catching.
  22. I agree. If the injury will limit Napoli to playing first base, go after the better first baseman-- LaRoche.
  23. Some might think that 3/$39 million is a ridiculous overpay for a catcher with a bad hip.
  24. i would prefer to part with Iggy. Kalish can hit and steal bases. Iggy will probably never hit MLB pitching.
