  1. How much have you seen them pitch? I don't see how you can declare them as good depth without seeing them when they have very little track record to back you up.
  2. No one is denying them credit. 2004 and 2007 were two seasons where they clearly built their teams with the intent of beating the Yankees. In 2004, they went out and got Big Schill and Foulke and in 2007 they signed their starting SS, right fielder and a starter. Those years they were loaded for bear. Too many other years they were content with building teams that would compete for the wild card.
  3. IMO this is not good depth at all.
  4. They should go back to 2 divisions. Keep the game pure. Selig has allowed the game to be sullied with PEDs, hurt the integrity of the 162 game season with wild cards, and instituted unbalanced inter league play for commercial purposes. His reign was terrible for the game.
  5. Uh but you are being a dick with this. Iortiz can debate in his second language better than most people can in their first language. Also, we frequently disagree about about topics, but we do so respectfully, so people just don't notice. Again, this entire post was unnecessary and yes you were being a dick.
  6. yes it is, but it doesn't change the fact that the Yankees have won 15 divisions in 17 years. We finished ahead of the Yanks twice and one of those times the Rays won the division. It's just not a great record of success.
  7. If we start seeing these guys, the team will be heading in the wrong direction.
  8. If we start seeing these guys, the team will be heading in the wrong direction.
  9. they made it very clear over many years that it was more important to "line up their pitching for the post season" rather than finish first. That is playing for second.
  10. The fact is that in most seasons the team was not built to beat the Yanks, but rather to get into the playoffs. The playoffs were paramount under the old wild card system. No one is disputing that, but winning your division does mean that you were the best team over 162 games. That happened once. Their record in that regard was just not very good. They built the best team once. Period. That is their record.
  11. With the new wild card alignment and the 1 game elimination finishing second will greatly diminish a teams chances of winning the World Championship. Our owners have been aiming for second place most seasons and relying on the relative parity afforded the wild card team. That will no longer be the case.
  12. As solely a first baseman, 3/$39 million is an overpay for Napoli.
  13. of course that's what was meant.
  14. I agree with you completely. IMO the Red Sox Marketing department is where all the talent resides in the organization. The baseball operations is full of duds.
  15. I don't get the point of this Napoli negotiation. If the guy has a physical condition that is concerning, move on. That's why they have the physicals. You either take him "as is" or move on. This ridiculous negotiation is like some new form of Dumpster Diving. it's like shopping at the Dollar Store where odd lots goods and irregulars sell for way below the normal retail price. If Napoli drops his price or agrees to only 2 years, big whoop. He's still damaged goods.
  16. Oh come on Fred, us entitled spoiled Red Sox fans expect too much. This great ownership group and FO has finished first once in its 11 year tenure. Thank goodness for the wild card. That's the same number of times that they finished first in the 11 years prior to 2002. From 1980-90 they finished first 3 times. As Red Sox fans, we should be more thankful for the wild card than JH and his band of carpetbaggers.
  17. Red sox fans around the world hope that you are right on this one.
  18. I liked the idea of Brian Wilson. When healthy, he is better than Hanrahan.
  19. Stumblebum. You don't hear that one much anymore. Was that a New York term? It's a colorful term.
  20. I agree that Dempster could eat innings if he can get people out in the AL. The same goes for Lackey if he doesn't hit any bumps in the road coming ack from TJS.
  21. No matter how good a bullpen is if your starters need the bullpen for 3 -4 innings 5-6 times a week, the pen will be in tatters by the middle of August. Our rotation just doesn't have inning eating starters.
  22. I agree. One is the back up plan for the other. Either of these guys could blow up.
  23. No one mentions Carlos Lee, but he is an available first baseman with right handed power.
