  1. Easily done 700. When he's being interviewed turn down the volume or shut the TV off. In print, just skip anything where he is being quoted and move on. Nothing to it.
  2. Man Hammer, you're a tough son of a @#$%%!!!!! You did say though that you would save on gear with a card, and that is a residual benefit of having the card. Over time if you bought enough gear it would add up. As for the $10,00, don't tell me a high roller like you can't afford ten bills. That ought to be chump change for you.
  3. 700 Hitter, if Clemens can be the difference that would get us into the World Series then I say go for it. Look, to me it is NOT enough to win one World Series and then become a cropper for a decade or so. To establish the Red Sox as one of the game's three or four elite teams we have to get back to the World Series as soon as we can. One more thing. Think of what it would be for our young prospects to know they are coming to a team that has proven that it can go all the way. What a morale and spirit booster for them and the organization, not to mention the millions of Red Sox fans salivating at such a event.
  4. Hammer, I'm with 700 Hitter on this World Cup or whatever they are calling it. I have absolutely no interest in it at all. What I worry about is that some players might not be in the best shape possible when the tournament takes place and they suffer a serious injury that keeps them out of action for awhile. I'm thinking specifically of David Ortiz. Think of how his loss could hurt us; it could devastate our chances this year.
  5. CC33, I'm afraid I'm going to have to take a back seat to you and Guapo on the Clemens thing because you have been Red Sox fans longer than I have been, but, again, I really don't think Clemens want to come back to Boston. I may be wrong and, hopefully, I am, because he could get him and he pitches as he did last year we could wind up back in the World Series. It's just that I feel deep inside that he's playing us all for suckers. I guess we'll have to wait and see how all this plays out.
  6. Red, you're going to dislike me for saying this, but not only did I not read the book he wrote after the '86 Series but couldn't have given a hoot in hell about his disappointment because my team back then was the very Mets who beat the Red Sox in the Series. Of course, I have had a stupendous metamorphasis since then and only wish the two teams could play again so I could root the Red Sox home. Sad, but true, I didn't find the team I should have always rooted for until I was close to 60. Talk about not getting it until the cows left the barn, well, at lest I finally got it.
  7. Red, I read "Win It For" last month. It is a slow read and takes some time to get through the book. What impresses you about it is the fact that so many die-hard Red Sox fans never got to see their beloved team win the World Series, and their children make this so clear in paragraph after paragraph. For most of those being quoted love for the Red Sox was inculcated in them at a very early age and it brings home why Red Sox fans are a breed apart. I just got through reading "The Devil Wears Pinstripes" and I'm still laughing my rear end off.
  8. Guapo, I wouldn't call it twisted as you do; just old fashioned thinking. I wasn't part of Red Sox Nation when Clemens played for the Red Sox, but from what I've read and heard he made no effort to stay with the Bosox. He was looking for something else as soon as the '96 season was over. Anyway, let's just agree to disagree and move on. I know I'm not going to change your mind and you won't change mine. As for Pedro, my opinion is that he was very upset to take second fiddle to Curt Schilling and didn't like it when he had to take a back seat to him. Again, it is just my opinion, but I believe he had no intention of returning even if the Red Sox would have added that extra year.
  9. Then I agree. Pedro before Clemens is a given. Now I have to be honest with you and the rest of the guys on this board. There is a bias in my opinion, and that bias is the Yankees. Pedro did not go to the Yankees; Clemens eventually did and bragged about how he wants to enter the Hall of Fame as a Yankee. That does it for me.
  10. No MC, you don't need a card, but it would make you feel better mentally to have one on you. Really it would.
  11. Red Sox Rooter, Cape man beat me to the punch. It costs $10,00, and the best part of it is the discount you get on Red Sox gear. My wife saved a lot of money on my Red Sox golf bag, watch, umbrella, dart board, and jacket. You ought to join up. It is a great source of pride to me when I see that in my wallet or when I get together with another Red Sox fan and we each show our RSN card. Get one.
  12. As I said in an earlier post Neither One of them should have their numbers retired by the Red Sox. The were disloyal to the team, and therefore, let some other team retire their numbers.

  14. Hammer, who can argue with your stats. It says it all. Again, though, back to the original question: Does a player have to play ten years for the Red Sox to have his number retired, and my assertion that the player must not have left the Red Sox for another team. To make it fair to both, I say NO sto both of them. Again, I'm 65 and an old timer by your standards and I know things have changed a lot in the mind sets of the younger guys like most of my friends on this board, but LOYALTY is very very very important to me and those two were not loyal to the Red Sox. So nyet, nein, no, no mas to both of them.

  16. aboe, I live in California, too, and I have a Red Sox Nation card that I carry proudly in my wallet. You can go on the Red Sox Board and find out how to get one. I'm expecting an E-Mail to renew my membership. That is the best way to show your love for the Red Sox; a card showing you are a member of Red Sox Nation says it all.
  17. Faithful was a pretty good book as far as I was concerned, but it wasn't my favorite of the ten Red Sox books I've read the past year. At the risk of some of my friends here getting on my case, I give the nod to Dan Shaughnessy's book "Reversing the Curse". Now I know the guy can be a real blowhard and there are Red Sox fans who live in Boston who can't stand the guy, but he wrote a pretty good book and layed it all out in detail how the Red Sox finally put whatever it was that kept them from reaching the the summit. I just liked that book the best.
  18. Schilling, that's a tough one. Roger did leave us but that was mostly Dan Douquette's fault. That guy could have turned prime rib into dog s***, the incompetent and personality challenged bum. Roger pitched for us for 13 years and if he told us he would go into the Hall of Fame with a Red Sox cap I would say yes. If not, I would say no. Again, loyalty does play a part in my opinions.
  19. 26-6, no I don't. I don't think anyone who leaves the Red Sox for another team should have their number retired. Loyalty has to play a role and Pedro spurned the Red Sox. I do believe that the ten year rule should be waved under extraordinary circumstances, a la Ortiz and Manny if they keep up their hitting and maybe Schill if he leads us to another World Series title, but for Pedro and Damon, absolutely not.
  20. Uh guys, America is Manny's country. He became a citizen in 2004. Of course, I am elated if the story is true. At least he will be in camp and getting to know his new teammates, and, especially so, they getting to know him. The latter ought to be a culture shock for messrs Loretta, Lowell, Crisp, Beckett and the rest of the new crowd.
  21. Riverside, if you ask me that was a good move by Tek. He did slump badly the last six weeks of the season after a torrid start. Some guys have great years between 33-37 and Jason is 34 now and could have a few more productive seasons if he takes care of his body as far as conditioning and nutrition are concerned. My only worry is who the hell is going to be the backup catcher this year? We have three automatic outs vieing for the position which means whenever Wake pitches the rest of the offense must be on full acceleration. What's your opinion on the matter RS and the rest of you out there. Am I off base?
  22. Hey 26-6, believe it or not I hope the Red Sox can just beat the Yankees in the season series, and wind up playing someone else in the playoffs to avoid what happened to your team after the 2003 ALCS. You agree with me that your club was dead-ass worn out from that seven-game series, and even though we survived it in 2004 we were so high from finally defeating the Yankees that the adrenaline carried over for four more games. I don't know if it could again. Sometimes it seems to be the World Series is anti-climatic after some of the great ALCS's we've had over the years. What's your opinion?
  23. Champ, good to see we are the same page with Francona. Still, I cannot figure out why a guy will go up against the best managers in baseball and completely surprise everyone by outshining them completely, then coming a cropper the next season when he looks like someone from the Pony League. Maybe with his better health entering this season and a hunger to return to the high life of the World Series we will be Francona at his best. Cross your fingers with me on that, ok?
  24. Thank you 700. I will try and work something out. It would beat seeing the Red Sox on my computer through MLB.com
  25. Hey Champ, why do you have to keep bringing up McCarver? We all know he is an incompetent horse's ass at the mike and says the most assinine things imaginable, but you must take into consideration that someone might be reading your post with him included just after a repast which could lead to one humungous unchuck. Think better of it my friend.
