  1. Quick football question. Marvin Harrison just got a 15 yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on second down and it was still second down. The penalty happend during the play. Why would it stay 2nd down? Bill Cower was yelling about this, while madden commented that Cower was upset and may have called the penalty himself, completely missing the fact he was holding up 3 fingers calling for 3rd down. Anyone know the rule on replaying the down?
  2. If the sox have the money to sign Wagner does anyone else think that money would be better spent somewhere else? We'd be lucky to sign him for 3 years and $30 million since hes already reportedly had an offer like that from the Mets that had a 4th year option. I think i'd rather see the Sox trade for Troy Glaus who could probably be had for cheap since he has a big contract and stick him at first base, or sign Brian Giles, play him in center, and move him to right next year to replace Trot.
  3. Yes, I've read plenty of your posts and they are usually well thought out and dont contain the arrogance you see out of many Yankee fans. Most Sox fans talking about Konerko were talking about how they'd like to get him. I don't believe they were assuming he was ours if we wanted him. I aslo find it hard to believe Theo would have said the things you say he did because I think they aren't allowed to comment on specific players under contract for another team like that.
  4. sign andrew jones or something? Gotta love yankee fans that think they have the right and can easily aquire the best players at every position whenever they want. He's signed through 2007.
  5. I think Buster Olney wrote that if the Yankees picked up Giles and were playing him in Center it would be to move in to replace sheffield in the long term. He also said that would make sheffield mad and he'd become a huge distraction. I don't really think hes right, but that was one member of the media's opinion. As a sox fan I really hope Giles does not end up in New York.
  6. I think you're overvaluing our players. Tracy is a young power hitting first basemen. Shoppach looked overmatched in the majors last year, Clement is an overpaid pitcher, and Murphy has put together half a good season at AAA.
  7. Papelbon does look ready to start, I agree. That does not mean he is going to. Francona has shown a preference for older more established players. Even if he doesn't start the season in the rotation theres a good chance he'll get lots of opportunities to start. How often does a teams top five starters stay healthy all year?
  8. Theres a good chance Papelbon starts the season in the bullpen, and that either clement or Arroyo get moved. It is obvious that the Sox have more pitchers than they can use though. The bullpen could also includes foulke, timlin, hansen, mota, bradford, myers, delcarmen, and dinardo.
  9. No way would they trade both Capuano and overbay for those three. There isn't much differenct between Clement and Capuano except Capuano is making the league minimum next year then becomes arbitration eligible for the next 3 while clement is making much more. Shoppach and Arroyo isn't a great package for overbay without Clement involved. Arroyos price tag is about to go up and destroy his value.
  10. There seems to be less interest in Wells than you'd expect. Of course, the team he is dead set on going to is a small market team and hes no bargain at potentially 9 million. I'm sure he'd go to a few other teams on the West Coast but it doesn't look like we've gotten much interest out there either. It will be interesting to see if his choices come down to pitching for the sox or retiring what he will do. I wouldn't mind seeing him come back. If he sucks you can move Pappelbon into his spot for the second half and not have to pay him those crazy incentives for the extra starts. I know its a long shot but it seems more likely every day.
  11. Its easier to see Hanley leave now than last year. The farm system has really come a long way. We still got Pedroia and Lowrie as prospects up the middle, and lester, pappelbon, hansen, bucholz, and delcarmen as young pitchers. Beckett is the kind of guy you move young guys for.
  12. gammons reported on sportscenter, hanley, sanchez, and one more minor leaguer. Getting Beckett without giving up Lester is a great move. Beckett is only 25 and isn't eligible for free agency for two more years. All the free agent pitchers are older and seem like a bigger risk than Beckett.
  13. from the herald article and what gammons wrote it seems we only have a chance if the Rangers decide blalock and their top pitching prospect is too much to give up. If we could pull it off for hanley and sanchez it definately looks like an interesting trade. If Lowell were to return to form it could turn out to be a steal. If Lowell repeats his last two years then thats a lot of money we're commiting to Beckett. He has 2 years left of arbitration and if he isn't expensive this year he definately would be next year. Lowell is owed almost 18 million for the next 2 years. I don't think they'd do the trade if the Marlins demanded Lester.
  14. My point is being completely misunderstood. I said, assuming he DIDN'T use steroids, this is still an awful sign to see. He only had one really good season, with a pretty good season before and after that. Other than that hes never done anything that would justify how much money he is making and has done nothing to show that he could come close to being an all star replacement for Manny. Considering he wasn't very good last year, and has gotten worse 2 years in a row, i think the sox should avoid him.
  15. Does anyone else that none of the top assistant GMs in baseball are interested in a promotion with more money and more power to become the sox new GM? Throw in the fact that our own bright assistant left for another job when he was the obvious guy to turn to if Theo left and its amazing how little interest there is to be the sox GM.
  16. Does anyone really think the yankees are serious in their interest in Damon? They way I see it is no one but the red sox seemed interested in him and the sox initial offer was really low. Yankees got scared that no one would overbid the sox low offer so they felt the need to drop the rumor they'd go 4/44. I mean we've heard rumors about specific teams interesting in Burnett, BJ Ryan, Billy Wagner, Paul Konerko. Have there been any rumors about another team having serious interest in Damon before the yankees dropped this? I think the sox should stay at 3/30 and see what happens. If we're giving 12 a year I'd rather see Giles for 3/36.
  17. Definately agree that Delcarmen isn't far away from being a very good reliever. One thing I'd add that he needs to improve on is locating that curve ball. Its got great break on it but it seems like he couldn't even get it close to the plate last year.
  18. the best tackle, middle line backer, cornerback, and safety aren't about to be waived though. the best wide reciever is.
  19. Not saying your wrong just wondering how you figured this out. Willis has pitched 3 years in the majors, and hasn't extended a contract, so it would seem like he'd be eligible for free agency after 2008. http://www.hardballdollars.com has Oswalt only signed through 2006, sabathia locked up through 2008, and Mark Prior a free agent after 2006 also.
  20. I agree, it is unfair to assume he used steroids. Assuming he didn't use steroids, he's gotten worse 2 years in a row. Thats still a terrible sign. Dropping over 100 points in slugging isn't in a 2 year stretch definately does not seem like an off year, especially when it goes with a 50 point drop in batting average, and about the same in OBP so its not like hes being more selective. Thats a major warning sign.
  21. Yeah, when i first read this post i went to look and didn't see him listed because he was with the Nationals last year and not the Rangers. Oddly enough espn.com shows him wearing a Rangers hat in his photo. He is 36 and just had by far the best year of his career but definately looks like a good guy to go after. Another name I'd throw out there is Scott Eyre. Left reliever that had a 2.63 ERA last year. I think steve phillips did projections on espn.com that had him going to the Sox saying hes a lefty that can get both righties and lefties out. by the way if you want to see whose a free agent: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/wire?section=mlb&id=2218048
  22. Aubrey Huffs batting average has dropped 50 points and his slugging has dropped 127 points in the last 2 years. Thats a huge dropoff. Considering he just turned 28 this year, players generally get better from age 26 to 28, not much worse. I think its unfair to point to guys as potential steroid users, but if this guy didn't use them he's gotten a lot worse in 2 years.
  23. Good point on Johan. I looked up his numbers after reading your post and his numbers look very similar to Ervin's at the same age. Of course the very next year Johan exploded with a huge season. Still, no gurantees with Ervin, but it does look like he has great stuff. None of this probably matter because Gordan Edes reported yesterday that the Angels might no longer be interested because Garret Anderson and Manny would both not want to DH.
  24. that was my point. I think he'd get a lot more. But like you said its a pointless discussion.
  25. You take Cameron, if hes healthy, because you have a need in center field, and the Mets won't take the whole salary without giving some contract back. I'm not saying its a salary dump, just that if we save 13 million in a trade its also useful to take into account who we would spend that money on.
