  1. good stuff there. Nomo had a horrendous K/BB ratio in Japan didn't he lol. Though you do have to admit if Matsu's numbers for the first two years are anywhere close to Nomo's first tweo years, RSN would be doing cartwheels and rightfully so.
  2. I actually think it's a great deal considering what Boras was asking for earlier. I've also posted before that I thought 9 or 10 mil a year was a fair price for Matsu. I just don't think it should be overlooked that $51m is still $51m. Congrats to the Red Sox for getting a great deal, now I hope he sucks it up for the next 6 years (but not because of injury). Question about semantics, I know that Fenway is kinda crowded for media coverage already. I've also seen the Japanese media contingent in Hideki's first year, scary.
  3. As I pointed out, Nomo's rookie year is even better than Johan Santana's 2006 Cy Young season. Go look at the stats for yourselves. The only thing off is Nomo's wins.
  4. I'm merely pointing out that Beckett seemingly pitched better when there was less pressure. Obviously it was different in 2003 WS, but in 2006, he did not do well when the Sox needed him most.
  5. yes let's forget about the $51m posting fee.
  6. I know you don't pull stats out of nowhere, but you were talking about the second half. The numbers I looked up are from July 3 - Sept. 27. I can see he had a good stretch in the closing month, but those numbers are after it was obvious that the Sox were going nowehre in 2006, correct?
  7. The WBC is a non issue for me. Career stats are a much better indication.
  8. in 1995, his first year in the bigs. Nomo had 28 starts, 4 CG with 3 SHO, and stuck out 11 batters per 9IP. He also sported a 1.05 WHIP. I wonder what you would say if Matsu had this kind of year.
  9. By my calculations, Becket sported a 5.8 ERA after June 28 averaging about 1 HR per start, and giving up almost 4 BB per 9 IP. Kid's got a lively arm and buried us in 2003, but I don't see the second half improvement you're talking about.
  10. Out of sheer boredom (at work) and jealousy (you got Matsu, we didn't), I decided to look up the stats of these two while they were in Japan and came up with a couple of very interesting lines. Japanese Careers (Nomo 5 years, 139 Games. Mastuzaka 8 years, 204 Games) Nomo - 78-46, 3.19 ERA, 1204 K Mastsuzaka - 108-60, 3.00 ERA, 1355 K These are very basic numbers obviously and don't have stuff like WHIP or BB. Nomo had a .629 winning percentage, Matsu had a .642 winning percentage. Nomo got a decision in 89% of his games (I don't know if they were all starts or not). Matsu got a decision in 82% of his starts (again, I don't know if they were all starts). If anyone has a better site than http://www.japaneseballplayers.com, I'd be more than happy to see a more detailed comparison.
  11. Nice rotation, maybe now the Sox can stay competitive in September to keep the Yankees fresh when they go into the playoffs.
  12. Hideo Nomo has a career 4.13 ERA and averaged almost a strikeout per inning. He had horrible control issues, but those kind of numbers in today's market would put him at probably $15m per year, and would make him the #2 guy in your rotation. Keep in mind the majority of these numbers are from 1995-2003, during the height of the steroids era
  13. thats the way it should be, they're getting paid like FA's anyway. The whole posting system is broke, we need to totally abandon it.
  14. if Matzu gets 90m over 5 years, the Sox would have spent $210m (posting fee included) on two of Bora's clients over the next five years at an average of $40m per year to Drew/Mat. WOW.
  15. BTW, I don't think Matsu should be eligible for ROY if he gets this kind of money. Giving ROY to Japanese players is a total disservice to the young guys who just came up.
  16. I don't understand why the Sox won't just offer a 10m per contract to Matzu with incentives that bump it up to tyhe 16m range. Someting like top 5 in ERA - extra $1m, top 5 in K - extra $1m, 200+ innings - extra $1m, etc. That way if he pitches like a stud, he gets paid like a stud, but if he flounders it isn't like he;s going to go broke.
  17. doug's defense is stellar, and I think he actualy hit .300 a few years ago for the Twins. That said, if he's still hitting near Mendoza line, I don't see why we cant just stick with Philips
  18. I like Kevin Thompson, but I like Bernie more, so this would be a move I'd be happy with. Anyone know anything about Marte? The only thing I know about him is from MLB2K5
  19. I like the NBA draft model. Of course they have much less personnel to worry about so baseball definetely woudl have to separate the domestic and international draft, otherwise we'd run into the danger of our GMs dying from sheer exhaustion.
  20. What you are suggesting is for the Red Sox to circumvent and break the rules, thereby putting Mr. Henry, the red Sox front office, and the Matzusaka deal at risk. It is not worth it. There's nothing wrong with playing by the rules.
