  1. It also serves the many Red Sox fans who are happy to see one of the franchise's all-time great players retire in a Red Sox jersey. Regardless of what went on behind the scenes or anyone's true motives in what happened yesterday, unless you're just the world's most cynical prick, what the hell is wrong with taking this story at face value?
  2. It's entirely debatable as to who's better between Lackey and Beckett anyway, when you factor in both performance and durability. Even in postseason stats, there isn't as much disparity between the two as one might think. My point is, Lackey's contract seems to be a pretty good benchmark as to what Beckett might expect.
  3. The fact that he got a WS ring in 2004 is enough.
  4. Lou Merloni, Alex Speir and Joe Haggerty are all reporting that Nomar Garciaparra will sign a one-day minor league deal with the Sox today to retire as a member of the Red Sox organization. I guess that's what will be announced at the 10:30am conference today. EDIT: Nomar will then move on to become an analyst for ESPN
  5. FWIW, 10:30am press conference at City of Palms this morning. Speculation is that it COULD be Beckett-related. EDIT: Nevermind, Rob Bradford says it isn't Beckett or Lowell-related
  6. Still throws like a girl.
  7. They clearly see a use in having Wakefield if they signed him to a two-year deal. Yes, I realize signing a guy to an extension doesn't necessarily mean they're set on keeping him (ie. Bronson Arroyo) but let's be honest, what the hell are they gonna get for Wakefield if they wanted to trade him?
  8. I highly doubt Wakefield will be able to make his starts consistently should be get a rotation spot anyway. But when they pencil in the final roster, I think Buch will be the 5th guy with Wake being the long reliever/spot starter.
  9. George C. Scott in Man Getting Hit by Football http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x169/Kafkateer/George_C_Scott.jpg "argh, my groin!"
  10. Pedro Martinez. The reason I became a Red Sox fan.
  11. Ratings for the game in Canada are in. There was an average of 16.6 million viewers, almost 50% of the country and at one point, 26 million people were watching, 80% of the country.
  12. Although it's funny that the stereotype is that we live in a desolate land of snow and ice yet everyone was complaining that there was no snow in Vancouver with temperatures in the 50s.
  13. Laughing at ourselves is a trademark of Canadianism
  14. Classy.

  16. Congrats to you guys as well. It's definitely a case of winning silver rather than losing gold and with such a great young core (Kessel, Parise, Kane, the Johnsons, Stastny, Miller, etc.), you guys have as good a shot as anyone at winning in four years.
  17. I thought it was one of the most highly competitive games I've ever seen and there was a reason I was nervous to face the Americans again in the finals. I liked the game Canada played. They weren't able to impose their will on the Americans the way they did to the Russians but they maintained pressure throughout the game. I was disappointed to see them kinda fall back in the third period, constantly content to just chip the puck out of the zone so I felt the tying goal was inevitable. I knew going into the Olympics that Team USA was in the mix of 6-7 teams that could've won it all despite Brian Burke and Ron Wilson constantly trying to play the underdog card. When you have the best goaltender in the world right now on your team, you aren't an underdog (see the Czech Republic in 1998). Honestly, if Canada and USA played 10 games, I think each side would win 5.
  18. I'm just so happy right now.
  19. With two more gold medals (a possibility with men's curling and men's hockey), Canada will break the winter olympic record for most gold medals
  20. All I did was try to make a funny in a thread that had very little legs to begin with.
  21. so what happens then when Jeter signs here next off-season?
