  1. Bill James has a job for a reason. Scouting is vital, but every team employs statisticians who are constantly creating newer and better statistical tools for modeling performance on the field. The Sox hired Bill James, the father of modern statistical analysis (sabermetrics); the Cardinals hired Micheal G. Lichtman, referred to as MGL, the creator of UZR (ultimate zone rating) which is considered the best defensive statistic ever created. The list goes on and on. Scouting identifies the those with the tools to perform. Stats guys identify those that are actually performing. Teams need both.
  2. I don't recall posting that. I'm familiar with stuff rating, a BP metric that measures dominance, but I've yet to find stuff ratings for MiLB players. I'll look around though. FWIW, Lester's 50% PECOTA projection has his "stuff" at 12 for 2006 (all levels). I just found it, it was a post by ksushi in the Barry Zito to Red Sox? thread in the Rumors forum. EDIT: Stuff Rating @ BP.com
  3. Lester was one of the youngest pitchers in the EL and he lead it in SO and ERA for starters. That's not hype; that's performance. I'll take a year's worth of stats over two innings in March.
  4. It's a done deal, 17-0 in 5 innings. USA vs. Japan on Sunday, 4 pm on ESPN2. It will probably be Peavy pitching against Matsuzaka.
  5. Yeah, the mercy rule is as follows. 15-run lead after 5 10-run lead after 7 It's now 16-0 going into the bottom of the 3rd. The U.S. needs to hold them for their next 3 turns at the plate (if they don't score anymore runs - I wouldn't put money on them not doing it at this point).
  6. Winn, single. Damon, single. Jeter, RBI single. Griffey, 2nd 3-run bomb. Arod, single. 14-0 with no-outs in the top of the 3rd.
  7. I hope they continue to because I'm going to tonight's game against Australia. Griffey, 3-run jack, D Lee, 2-run double, 9-0 with 2 down in the top of the 2nd. Pitcher change.
  8. 4-0 U.S. after 1. If this holds, the eight advancing teams will advance into the following pools. Pool1 Pool2 U.S. D.R. Mexico Venezuela Korea Cuba Japan Puerto Rico Every one of those round robin games should be good ones. I love this tournament.
  9. You can watch it on mlb.tv. I think it's $10 for the whole WBC coverage. Let me tell you as a subscriber, mlb.tv rules. You get access to every game that isn't blacked out on Saturday afternoons due to Fox' coverage. The whole season is $79.95, but it's worth every penny.
  10. I'm not saying Bronson is too hittable to be a closer because of his two ST appearances this year. I got that impression of Bronson quite some time ago. He's capable of some very good pitching performances, but he gets shelled just as often as he shuts teams down. I like Bronson. He's good back end of the rotation type of pitcher who can give 200+ innings of league average pitching without arm problems, which has some value. He's even got the moxie to be a closer. I just don't think he has the stuff.
  11. From the WBC website, at the bottom of the Standings page: link
  12. I agree, reliever is the best role for him. I just don't see him as a closer. Too hittable.
  13. Not true. Look a few posts up; I explained the tie-breaker. We win, we're in.
  14. Bronson is junk-baller that can't locate his FB who gets smacked around by LH batters. He is perfectly suited for the back of the rotation or as the long-man in the BP, but he doesn't have anything that can dominate hitters, which is what you typically want in a closer. I'm not saying a closer has to be overpowering, I mean, look at Foulke. When he's healthy, he's just touching 90 or a little above it. But he's got pinpoint control and a devastating change up that looks exactly like the FB when he releases it.
  15. Yeah, they get s*** wrong all the time. It was Mexico scoring 3 or more runs gets the US in (provided they win).
  16. What channel? I loved that movie when I was a kid. Isn't that where Godzilla goes from menace to hero?
  17. If this score holds and the US wins, then there will be a three way tie. The first tie-breaker is head to head, but each team will be 1-1 against the other 2 teams. The second tie-breaker is the Runs Allowed agains the teams in the tie. Mexico has given up 2 runs (thus far) in their games against the US and Canada, the US has given up 8 (all last night) in their games against Mexico and Canada, and Canada has given up 12 (thus far). No matter the outcome of this game, if the US wins tomorrow, they are in.
  18. I still can't get the audio, oh well. Mexico is raking on Francis.
  19. That means the US just needs to beat S. Africa and they're on to the second round. EDIT: And, yeah, retried the link and it's the right game now. EDIT2: RSR, are you getting audio out of your stream? I'm not.
  20. The mlb.tv link for the Canada vs. Mexico game connects to the Venezuela vs. Australia game. This sucks.
  21. McGwire gets in, IMO. He (according to him) was using androstenedione at the time of his record. That is on the books as an illegal steriod now, but it was legal at the time. Hell, I used a bottle of it when I was in the Marines. He won't get in on the first ballot for two reasons. One, he is part of the steroid controversy and he didn't help himself with his "I'm not here to talk about the past" comment to Congress. Two, the biggest reason, his first chance is next year when Cal Ripken and Tony Gwynn are also eligible for the first time. There is no way the sportswriters put him in the Hall with those two uber-squeeky-clean baseball legends. Mac gets in before his 6th ballot, IMO.
  22. First full season: Player Age BA/OBP/SLG HR SB/SBA Bernie 24 .268/.333/.400 12 9/18 Coco 24 .297/.344/.446 15 20/33 Prior to their age-24 years, both Coco and Bernie played in two seasons where they played in less than 100 games. Coincidentally, they both played in 139 games their first year starting. EDIT: I'll be as giddy as a schoolgirl if Coco can do what Bernie did from age 26-33.
  23. Good luck on future endeavors Pokey. I hope you find your happy place, and I hope Shooter McGavin isn't there.
  24. I think that makes the most sense ATG13, and that seems to be the majority opinion of those who have proposed fixes for the event's timing.
  25. But, you, like others, have voiced concerns about player injury during the WBC. Injuries are much more likely to happen when fatigued, and the players will be much more fatigued in November than they will be at any time of the year. Plus, I'm a baseball nut, but I don't get too jazzed up about ST. The games are all about going through progressions and aren't competitive. I think a little competitive ball before the season kicks off is a nice taste of the six months ahead.
