  1. Anyone watching the Duke/GW game? What's the rule on touching the rim while the shot is in the air? I know Nelson's shot had no chance to go in, but I don't think that matters in terms of interpretting the rule. Pops Mensa-bonsu (SP?) was clearly on the rim while the ball was in the air.
  2. He had 37 GF last year, so the only thing that raises the player option to $7.75M is 53 GF or a top-5 Cy Young finish this year. Needless to say, if he's good enough to be finishing out 53 games or be a top-5 Cy candidate, then the Sox will want him around in 2007.
  3. I didn't take it as a jab; I was just clarifying my position.
  4. Oh, it doesn't hurt me as a fan. But it's jacking up my bracket. Izzo usually has his team playing well come March, and with two experienced upper-classmen leading the way, I thought they'd go on a little run.
  5. MSU hurt me. I had them sneaking into the elite-8.
  6. I happen to think it is moving in the opposite direction. Given the skepticism surrounding this event before it started, I might have agreed with this before they started play. But, now that I've seen the games and given the buzz this has created, I think this tournament is gaining momentum. There have been reports that some of the US's premiere players that declined this time are experiencing some remorse about not participating. I think it will only get better the next time around. The only reason this was created is because the IOC dropped baseball as an Olympic sport due to the fact that MLB wouldn't agree to a work stoppage to allow the pros to participate. Given the success of the WBC thus far and the fact that the timing allows the best players to play without decreasing revenue (revenue is lost if they shorten the season for the Olympics), I don't see them dropping this if the IOC changes it's mind.
  7. Wild finish going on in the Indiana/SDSt game. I love this tournament.
  8. I've read scouting reports that said Hinrich could play the point, but I've never been sold on it. He didn't in college, and after one-year of it in the NBA, the Bulls drafted Chris Duhon who runs the floor now. I think they are very similar players coming out of college. EDIT: I will admit, Hinrich is a much better defensive player than JJ is, but on the offensive side of the ball, I think they compare nicely.
  9. Absolutely. If he can play in the NBA, then there's no reason to think Redick can't.
  10. Wow, the US lost to Mexico and Canada in the same tournament. Third best on the continent. Yay! EDIT: spelling
  11. Personally, I think JJ needs to improve his handle to become a good guard in the NBA. That said, there was a 6-3 SG drafted in the first round in 2003 that has a comparable skill-set to Redick. Good spot-up shooter, undersized for the #2 spot, similar athletic ability, ball-handling skills weren't good enough for the point. He's had success in the NBA, and he isn't close to being as pure a shooter as Redick. Any guesses?
  12. Oh, I didn't hear that he was hurt. Buck's still a fool, though.
  13. Is Buck Martinez the dumbest person alive? He's certainly making his case tonight. How do you start an 0-13 Teixeira over a 5-14 (3 HR in 4 games played) Derrek Lee in an elimination game? How do you put the weaker-armed Vernon Wells in RF and the guy with the cannon, Francouer, in LF? Someone check the guy for a pulse.
  14. Actually, the US can lose and go on to the semi's. The first TB (tie-breaker) is head-to-head, and the second is RA/9 against teams in the tie. If the US loses to Mexico, then there will be 3 teams with a 1-2 record, and all three would be 1-1 in games against the other two. That means the runs-allowed per nine-innings against each other would determine who advances. In games involving those three teams, they have given up the following amounts of runs. US - 3 (against Japan) Japan - 5 (against US/Mexico) Mexico - 6 (against Japan) Here's a breakdown of the advancing scenarios for each team from the WBC site:
  15. Get off your high horse. Different people follow their favorite teams with different levels of fanaticism, but they are all fans. I really can't stand it when people challenge the fandom of others. Whether they follow every move and watch every game or only skim the boxscores during the season, a fan is a fan.
  16. FWIW, you didn't leave him much choice when you called him a bench-warming goober.
  17. I know you don't like stats, but I suspect it is due to a lack of understanding more than anything. Yes, there is more to the game, like having good mechanics or being lucky. That last one is what Chacon was last year. In his entire MLB career before coming to NY (4+ years) his balls-in-play batting average (BABIP) was .279. His home average was .278 and his road average was .280. That is a pretty stong indicator that this is the norm for him. He's gone drastically higher (.030 or more points above his average) once when his BABIP was .314 in 2004 and his ERA was 7.11. He's gone drastically lower once when his BABIP was .239 after getting traded to NY, and his ERA was 2.85. This is why his FIP (fielding independent pitching statistic) ERA is 4.57 for his time in NY. Crespo is right. He's a mid-4 ERA pitcher, which is OK in the AL East (about league average), but for Chacon to improve over last year like you suggest he will, he'll have to start growing shamrocks out of his ass to get any luckier.
  18. Are you questioning the word wont? I mean, the sentence grammar is fine and wont is the only obscure word there. If you don't get it because of wont, I can help. Wont means "accustomed" or "used to". With that definition, then sentence should make more sense.
  19. Actually, not all of them are there by choice. Several of their players want their Japanese clubs to post them but have been turned down thus far.
  20. Your one liners really suck.
  21. There's an ESPN article where Jeter is quoted as saying he's had several calls expressing remorse about not participating in the event. There was so much skepticism going in that I doubted how good this thing would be, but the games have been exciting, even some of the blow-outs. And, yeah, that Ortiz shot was an absolute bomb. The pitcher tried to come inside with a FB and left out over the plate about belt high. The cookie monster gobbled that bitch up.
  22. Shut up and pitch, Curt. The fact that he has beaned two people in ST is message enough to the rest of the league, no need to open his mouth about it. His comments have, in essence, made his teammates targets when he is pitching and someone gets brushed by him.
  23. Two points I'd like to make. #1 If you feel these games are meaningless and that the players involved would be better suited in their respective ST camps, then you aren't a fan of baseball, you are just a fan of your team. Which is fine, but it is a shame because as a baseball fan I can tell you are missing out on some fantastic baseball. Nothing about the atmosphere of the games, both on the field and in the stands, suggests this is meaningless. This is the first time all the best professional players from each country have played together when they were at the peak of their game. It's ground breaking, and it is as exciting as hell. #2 If a player who you usually root against just so happens to be playing for your country, and he does something big to win the game, what is served taking shots at him afterwards? Seems very sophomoric to me.
  24. FWIW, no scouts or scouting systems are predicting major contributions before then. Hell, in 2-3 years he'll only be 23-24. It is rare for a pitcher to make major contributions before then. Fortunately, we traded for one of the one's that has done it.
