  1. I must have missed the part where the WS has bearing on the future. This involves only two teams, the league champions. This tells us what league had the best team at the end of the season, not the better league. The WS' historical importance, again, doesn't tell us s*** about the leagues. Remember, this is about the leagues, not the record books. This isn't about opinion. You are wrong. I've shown you the folly in your logic and the gross contradictions in your points. Whether or not you can own up to them is up to you.
  2. No, this isn't a semantical argument. We aren't parsing words differently. The lines are clear. You think the WS tells us more because it's what people will remember. I think IL play tells us more because, well, there's a shitload more data in it. One of these stances involves the stuff of analysis. The other involves perception. I'll let you try and figure the rest out.
  3. Why does what people remember matter? We aren't discussing the historical importance of the WS vs. IL play. We are debating which one tells more about the relative strength of the leagues. The amount of importance fans place on IL play means nothing in this discussion. If your argument against IL play begins with the fact that it doesn't occur over the whole season, then you completely contradict yourself by placing more importance on a series that lasts only one week. I'm not saying IL is a perfect gauge. It's just better than the WS. For some reason, you can't seem to get this.
  4. Again, what "matters" and what we "remember" aren't the same as relevant data. When you want to compare the relative quality of two things, the bigger and more inclusive sample is always more relevant than the smaller and more exclusive one. This is plain common sense.
  5. Define successful. I've earned a cumulative 3.75 GPA in Calculus I, II, III, Differential Equations, Partial Differential Equations (applied boundary value problems), Vector and Tensor Analysis, and Probability and Statistics for Engineers. However, I don't work in the field of mathematics. Few people do.
  6. If the team is interested in taking on Helton's contract, then they should decline to have money come with him and ask for Fuentes in return. Lowell, Tavarez, and Hansen for all of Helton's contract and Fuentes. Getting cash relief from Colorado means little to a team like Boston, and that money does them no good this year since all the FAs are signed. While I love our pitching looking forward (next 3-4 years), the window to win with the two-headed monster on offense is going to start closing soon.
  7. I only caught the tail end of his career, and Gooden's curve was better than Bert's at that time.
  8. No, and I don't care. I don't care which league is better or worse. It means nothing to me. I'm only interested in this topic because I find it laughable that someone thinks this is true.
  9. Attendees from SoSH said he wasn't even at the facility where the game was played. Also said the announcer and scoreboard operator had several gaffes during the game. EDIT: That one has Burns too. http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070306&content_id=1830231&vkey=spt2007gamer&fext=.jsp&c_id=bos#boxscore
  10. When he had his power, Schilling's split was better than Clemens'. However, Mike Scott's, when he was on, was just silly - of course, he was probably scuffing the ball. The splitter moves a lot like the change up, and none of their splitters were better than Pedro's change, so once I had it on my list, I didn't see the need for redundancy.
  11. Well, the typical starter uses 3-4 pitches, so I'm going to be reasonable and give my perfect starter 5 (and they will be pitches I've seen thrown). Pitch #1: The Ryan Express - 5000+ K's, need I say more? Pitch #2: Mariano's Cutter Pitch #3: Pedro's Change-Up Pitch #4: Gooden's Curve Pitch #5: Eck's Slider Saberhagen's command, Schilling's big-game ability, Clemen's (regular season) competitiveness. However, like Kilo said, Pedro circa '99-'00 works too.
  12. Someone at SoSH posted in the lurker game thread that she attended the game, and Hansen wasn't there and did not pitch. He just got cleared to start throwing bull-pen sessions, so it was a mistake by Gameday yesterday.
  13. Just having some fun, Jacko. I will say this, though. You were composed last offseason, but when the season started, you had a hard time keeping your emotions in check.
  14. Prediction: If the optimism I see here comes true; specifically, the Sox winning the ALE and the Yankees on the first tee by October 1. Then Jacko will revert to TheRiv and be banned before the ALDS is over.
  15. Are you sure you watched him? The boxscore says he didn't pitch. link
