1. Buerhle is believable because that is a flawed team. I don't see the tribe trading an effective starter when they are in 1st place. Miller throws gas, so I would imagine he'd get slotted into a relief role later in the season as their BP is the weak link.
2. Calling it Coors-like doesn't even touch the surface.
Location| R | H | 2B | HR | BB | K Colorado|1.34|1.22|1.22|1.24|1.08|0.92 Lancaster|1.19|1.20|0.96|1.64|1.18|1.19
These are 3-year weighted for 2003-2005. Link That place is a launching pad. The 3rd worst park factor of every park in professional baseball over that time.
3. Not a no-no, but Penny has 10 Ks through 4 on 64 pitches. He could threaten 20.
4. On a side note, anyone catch the Waldman clip on the radio today? Several sports talk shows have played it, and if you haven't heard it, I'm sure an MP3 is out there somewhere on the 'net. Easily one of the most pathetically funny things I've heard on the radio.
5. I've got to say, I agree with 700 in regards to the financial part. Whether or not it makes financial sense is immaterial at this point. It's a one year deal. Hell, it's less than one year. The expenditure will not hamstring them to do things in the future. All that said, I really think, in light of the press coming out afterward, that they had little to no shot. I firmly believe he goes to NY for all the reasons stated if the offers are equal, and I don't think NY lets him slip away, not this year with their problems, especially not to Boston. So, like I said right after it all happened. Good. Good for the Yankees. Now let's rake the ever living shite out of him if he kicks off the reunion tour in Fenway.
6. Keep in mind, this is why you sell used cars and don't scout ball players. I grew up in the DC area, and I watched a boatload of O's games. They really aren't comparable. Mussina has/had less zip on the fastball and no power breaking pitches. The only similarity is that they have enough quality in their secondary pitches to pitch backwards. Speaking of his talent, he has every bit of the talent Mussina did back then, and he has an ability to dominate games that Mike never had. Now, that is just his talent. To translate it to the field, what he needs to do to see the results is eliminate the Mr Hyde inning. That is what's killing his numbers right now. I really hope you think you got the better guy in Clemens, and I hope you continue to discount him as an asset for this team this year. That way the sting will be all the greater when he figures it out, and he's close. We aren't talking about somebody that needs to put four or five things together before it happens. It's just one missing ingredient, the ability to shrug it off and get the next guy. He'll get it.
7. I agree, what I opined cannot be supported in fact. If it could have been, it wouldn't be an opinion. It also cannot be discarded. Given his comments, which I acknowledge could have just been "saying the right thing", I think he picks NY all things being equal. And, given NY's need and M.O., I think it would be hard to demonstrate how they wouldn't match any offer. I'm not trying to wash any balls here. I'm just not finding fault in this instance. Good for them. This move definitely makes them better. I don't think it makes them better than us, though. The stretch run will be fun.
8. Schilling, and only an idiot who hasn't paid attention the last 20 years says otherwise. Curt went 1-1 against Lieber? Funny, could have sworn his ankle was so jacked in the first game it took experimental surgery for him to pitch the rest of that postseason. Check the stats, Gom. Schilling is one of the best postseason pitchers ever. Roger's had some success, but he's pulled up lame or s*** the bed just as often. Game 7? Curt all the way.
9. Brilliant. Extrapolated success from the team you root for. You have bigger issues than I thought. The past of these two teams means dick to what happens tomorrow, and even less about who you or I are. Get f***ing over yourself. You root for the Yankees. Want a cookie?
10. This kid throws ched, but he can't locate yet. He'll be deadly with some polish. That was a meatball to Howard.
11. K's the side. He can bring it for being slightly bigger than Pedroia.
12. Hung that curve pretty bad. Victorino has no power and that thing went into the bay.
13. Are we discussing Sunday night baseball here? I'm stoked about this pitching matchup. Haha, love it. ESPN has got the epic/poetic "breaking records" intro, and BB isn't playing.
14. I'd give up any package they could want for Holliday, and then I'd trade Manny for some replacements. Holliday is a young stud entering his prime. If we could get Holliday, you make room for him. Period. All that being said, there's no way they trade him. Tavarez probably couldn't scare up much in trade. Let's be honest about the guy. He's filler in a pitching staff, and people just don't give up much for filler. And, about the Lowell + Tavarez + ________ trade package for Helton, I don't see a fit. Colorado does not need a 3B. Garrett Atkins is better than Mike Lowell now, and younger, cheaper, etc.
15. $28M x 1.40 (luxury tax) x .67 (prorate) = $26.2M for 20 starts (if he makes them all) He better be good. I'll bet Matsuzaka's FIP is lower than his at the end of the year too.
16. f***ing slick play by Mikey.
17. Yeah, the sac fly screw up and the first inning free outs are looking like they carry a little more weight right now.
18. f***ing Pedroia is straight raking it right now.
19. Good. f*** 'em. I hope they stay healthy the rest of the year. That way if we beat them there are no excuses. And, I like our chances. This is a good ball club, and I think injuries are the only thing that will hold it back.
20. Clemens signs with the Yankees. EDIT: Shocker.
