  1. My sources say it's Scutaro plus Lackey for Tulo and some humidor balls.
  2. Probably Hanley. Yep. That seems most logical.
  3. Good catch Bellhorn... https://twitter.com/#!/TroyRenck Who does this leave as a starting SS? Aviles?
  4. IF his name is actually Bud Selig. "Police in Milwaukee, Wisconsin say Bud Selig's real name is Mort Zamansczki, and that his real age is 97."
  5. Doesn't a 30% raise seem a bit much though?
  6. If true then clearly their budget questions were too significant to sign even a guy like Oswalt. It isn't the end of the world but another arm would be really nice.
  7. There is a well publicized arbitration deadline, whereby teams have to offer it by a certain date, like, two months ago. It's as binding as the term "deadline" sounds. Once they commit they're in. On another topic, does anyone know how the arbitration process actually works? Is it something that is based at all on each sides arguments? In other words, with all of the Sox current fancy metrics and their ability to articulate value in 500 languages, is there any interesting discussion here, or is this a "HR", "RBI" kind of deal? The going rate for DH's is pretty low; regardless of their offensive value, they should subtract a reasonable amount for s***** baserunning and no fielding and no ability to field even if they need him to. Instead they will probably pay thru the nose. Bummer.
  8. Last I heard that was still Seligs plan. Have you seen otherwise?
  9. There are supposed to be two wild cards. Also, why is it likely that the Sox top three will falter but the Blue Jays and/or Rays staffs are assumed to be as good or better than last year? James Shields has a career year and we all prepare for more of the same. Beckett does too and we assume it's a fluke, even though most objective (non-red sox) observers would prefer Beckett on the mound. Who do the Blue Jays have that gets you so confident they could overtake the Sox even with a season ending injury to Lester? I just don't see it. The Rays have a very good club but even they will need big performances to keep up with a team like the Sox, with or without Sox injuries. That could absolutely happen but I see no reason to think other teams can just skate to 94 wins but the sox need luck. If the sox need luck then so does everybody else. I think its a case of the grass being greener on the other side of the fence
  10. I dont entirely get this. The White Sox? Toronto? The Red Sox actually beat the Yankees head to head last year and it didn't look close. They were the better team on the field most games. Seasons and championships aren't won head to head but I have a hard time saying they are totally different tiers right now. TB BOS and NY are very close IMO, and the love for the Angels is remarkably similar to the love of the 2011 Sox last January if you ask me. Let's see how it plays out first.
  11. Let's be honest here. Salty may "suck", but he is roughly average in terms of catchers. The state of catchers is either really poor these days, or many of us underestimate the difficulty of playing the catching position well. One would think that with the money available in the sport we would see lots of catchers who can get close to .400 OBPs and good overall OPSs. Instead, we have a situation where catchers who hit in the mid .700s get praised as having a good bat. I'd say our expectations are too high. Most catchers aren't good.
  12. And they're still pretty f***ing good on paper.
  13. It's already there. I'm convinced, however, that a baseball team can only get so good. Teams can look remarkable on paper but the game still comes down to series of matchups between a single hitter against a single pitcher. If the Yankees of the early 2000s and the Phillies of the past year or two can't win with their teams, no "paper" team will ever convince me that the rest of the teams should give up. That's what keeps me optimistic about the Red Sox. There's a long way to go between where we are now (in late January) and where teams are 162 games later in September/October.
  14. I'm not bothered by you using them. SBF's constant use of them in such negative tones just overpowers any logical arguments he might be trying to make. I'm not the only one who has noticed it, so I would chalk it up to communication styles or something, but it just doesn't work for me. I find it to be juvenile. When Chris Berman does it he usually does it when something positive happens. I don't care that much, but it just gets under my skin, makes me respect one of my fellow posters much, and I think it contributes to the already annoying "realist" vs. "optimist" split going on here.
  15. It just gets old man. If you want to be respected, why not just stop with the stupid nicknames?
  16. At least he should be back for the 2012 season. The same can't be said for Victor Martinez in Detroit. Bummer for him... I always liked V-Mart.
  17. Color me disappointed. WTF? Crawford out for a bit at the beginning of the season. Christ. No obvious replacements for him. Let's hope for a quick recovery.
  18. Seems stupid to limit his options for that extension the following year too, but I wouldn't be shocked if Oswalt was hesitant to come get his ass kicked in the ALE. I usually like Merloni though and think his analysis is usually pretty strong.
  19. I hadn't really looked at those numbers but you are right. I thought Jair was closer to Gio Gonzalez in terms of his stuff; he's not. His average FB from 2011 dipped below 90 and were only just above it prior to that. That's not to say he's a bad pitcher, but he's not as good as I thought he was. His K/9 is really low for someone occasionally described as one of the better pitchers in the NL. No thanks... unless he costs less than Youkilis... like Aviles and a mediocre prospect or two.
  20. Perhaps they could add a clause whereby Lackey is required to sit in the locker room and eat any fried chicken and drink any beer that other players try to cart in without Bobby V knowing. Lackey becomes the fried chicken and beer vacuum, gains tons of weight but preserves the health of the other players. Also, he could turn into an obnoxious prick and gently dissuade Beckett and Lester from wanting to hang out after games... Lackey (drunk): "Hey! Guysss! Let's f***in' go OUT! Let's DO this!" Beckett: "Uhh, no John, I think you've had enough. God, you stink." Lester: "Yeah, John, what have you done to yourself. You have chicken grease on your face. You look horrible". Beckett: "Yeah man, you've really gone over the edge. Why are your knuckles bleeding?" Lackey (points at mirror): "Pffff. That ugly f*** in the window gave me a look. f***ing douchebag."
  21. Nice work SoxFanForsyth. Good discussion and finally some digging in the dirt on this issue. This is how discussion should go around here. It looks like the result is that there isn't any legitimate cap space currently, and that they are aiming to stay under the LT (despite Gammons claims that they are already over it, so who gives a s***). Hence, minimal ability to pick up a guy like Oswalt. I'm feeling more optimistic about Bard at this point, and think that one of those 3 guys, or Aceves or Doubront or Miller or someone could take the #5 spot with a good showing in the offseason and spring training. Oswalt would be nice, but I seriously doubt that their success this season will depend on him.
  22. I just looked up "Daniel Bard + slider" on the google machine and got this site first: http://www.fangraphs.com/not/index.php/daniel-bards-filthy-whiffmaker/ If watching this single pitch (and reading about it) doesn't remind you of the arm we're talking about, nothing will. Watch the leg-kick on the follow through. Remind you of anyone? Maybe, someone who pitched for the Sox in the late 90s-thru the mid-2000s and is a 1st ballot HOF?
