  1. I think Seattle was very careful with him when they called him up. As careful as a team can be, in my opinion. He has innings for sure but I would have used him the same way. He's truly a beast.
  2. This, from top to bottom. They lost to Felix Hernandez, who as a magnificent pitcher had perhaps his most magnificent outing. He's a different caliber of pitcher and he pitched the whole way. Dont s*** on Atcheson or the other players. It was a great game that the Sox just happened to lose. Also, throw the farm at Seattle for Felix. He's right there with Strasburg as the best in the league if you ask me.
  3. Good stuff SFF. It's true. Sox system is so weak that only all-star ceiling players can be included in any deal for a known entity... hell, last week Jacko would have claimed that the Sox would need to part with Barnes and Boegarts for an established utility guy like Lillibridge.
  4. I just remember in the offseason discussion saying that the Sox should stay away from Gio Gonzalez because some of his numbers weren't ideal, he was merely mediocre in a few areas, etc.,. Now, watching him, it is obvious that the kid can throw and any team who has him is better off. My point isn't that Greinke is Gio, or vice versa. It's that if a kid can throw they can throw. I'm a mental health professional. I know all about anxiety. I know it is real. I also know the Sox could use a good pitcher and should seriously consider every one that is available because there aren't that many former Cy Young award winners available right now. They should do their due diligence. If Greinke doesn't think he can do it, then they should avoid him. But if he thinks that he can, by all means don't hesitate. Perhaps he's matured now that he's out of KC and a bit older.
  5. I'm pretty sure Jacko already started a thread about this Yankee lefty going on the DL... oh, wait, that was their other--better-lefty. Bummer.
  6. Of course there's a mental component. At that level it is largely mental. AT the same time, you mentioned body language numerous times. I'm willing to bet that SBF (and you) haven't watched a single second of Bard's supposed "meltdowns" at the AAA level. If that's the case, how can you know what his body language was like in those instances? This is all flimsy armchair psychologist stuff. Yes, he has to get his head right. No, you don't know whether he is "broken" or not. That's beyond your knowledge level. Remember, neither of you have ever had a single discussion with Bard... yet you pretend that your years of watchign baseball are enough to categorically state that he's irreparable (more SBF than you, a700). Others see that as absurd.
  7. White sox fans should be happy. Due to a strange confluence of events they got a good deal. It's strange. The Sox saved maybe 2m and got a small return of potential MLB contributors, for a guy they would have released after this season anyway. I don't think Youk is washed up. It was a move that had to be made for the sox, but CWS may be the long term winner.
  8. Stewart has a career 3.07 minor league ERA. Granted, his WHIP isn't that impressive, but the ERA seems promising.
  9. Youkilis wasn't hitting. they can't afford to take up a roster space with him. Valentine isn't going to play him anymore. The pressure has been building to this moment, let's not pretend that everything could have kept going like this indefinitely.
  10. http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=14189465&c_id=mlb http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=14189617&c_id=mlb A couple of clips of Lillibridge breaking Yankee hearts. He's not much, but that makes me happy.
  11. Yeah, in 97 games last year he only had an .845 OPS. No promise there at all. Jesus fellas, the Sox HAD to get Youkilis out of there. He ate up a roster spot, was not good, blocked Middlebrooks, and was somewhat of a malcontent. People have been saying consistently that the Sox wouldn't get anything for him. Well, it seems they didn't get much for him, but they are out from under him now and can move forward. Addition by subtraction.
  12. doug mientkiewicz, orlando cabrera, dave roberts. 'Nuff said.
  13. Jim Bowden says the Sox get a utility player and pitcher for Youk. Names to follow.
  14. Here we go with Craig Hanson again... Cla Meridith was only mishandled in that the Sox traded him without giving him much of a shot, for Doug Mirabelli, only to see him dominate for a very short period before returning to earth. A completely different situation IMO.
  15. This is an instance where, rather than saying "they had to rebuild him" you could actually give the development/scouting team some credit and say "they were able to make him one of the best relief pitchers in the league". I don't see this as a random incident, I see it as being related to their actual ability to make him better. If they did it once, they can do it again. This is a guy with 252 IP in the bigs, an ERA in the low 3's, and a WHIP under 1.2. Oh yeah, he's also only 27. There isn't a single reason to give up on him.
  16. Who said anything about a few weeks? He could come back as a stellar setup guy next season and it would be okay. They have this guy for a few years.
  17. Ella will get plenty of chances... Until he's a FA. Then he goes to highest bidder. Could you imagine the shitstorm of criticism the FO would get if they signed Ells to a 20+m contract and he was injured every other year?
  18. This is probably the last weekend for Kevin Youkilis in Boston. Even though we are all ready for him to move on I think it is fair to say that he has been a great Red Sox player over the past 5-7 years. Interestingly, I haven't seen any speculation on which player might be returned for him. Even though most people think the Sox won't get anyone, I suspect they will get somebody with a little bit of value if they pick up some of his salary. Youkilis could really come and solidify a lineup if he can regain his OBP skills. White Sox apparently the front runner this morning.
  19. I would move him for an ace, but not for 6 months of an ace. 1.5 years at the least. Hamels is a FA after this year. It would still be worth moving someone for Hamels, but not Barnes. I actually don't think the Sox match up that great with Philly for a Hamels trade. They would have a year ago, when a guy like Doubront was probably on the block, but Barnes is too good and I bet their interest in Ranaudo would be pretty limited.
  20. Lots of players have down years. Josh Beckett looked like the worst pitcher in the league in 2006 and bounced back considerably. Adam Dunn was terrible last year. I suspect that if Crawford still played for Tampa and had his 2011 season while playing for Tampa, people would be saying "you have to watch out for Crawford, he's still a really dangerous player. Just look at that track record!" But because he plays for Boston the pessimism naturally takes over, things that players do on other teams no longer applies, and we are suddenly doomed to 6 seasons of one of the worst players in the league. Players have bad seasons, then they have good seasons. Did you know, for instance, that even the great Daniel Nava had a .778 OPS in AAA last year?
  21. Why wouldn't we send Middlebrooks for him? /sarcasm. Point being, the excitement we have about Middlebrooks is what we could have with Bogaerts, Barnes and maybe Bradley in 2-3 years. You shouldn't trade an untouchable prospect, even a few years before they become untouchable, IMO, because there's nothing more valuable than an all-star caliber player at Daniel Nava caliber prices. In all honesty, if the Sox could have Hamels for an extra year then I would probably make that deal (Boegarts and Bradley, not Barnes), but he's a FA in a few months so that price would be much too high.
