  1. Bard seems to have found whatever it is that the Sox thought he could find. His stuff alone would have him competing with top-notch veterans like Oki and Saito for that setup role pretty quickly. If he keeps throwing strikes there's no reason he's not the pen's 2nd best pitcher... Or an extremely valuable trade chip with words like "dynamic closer" with so many years left before he gets expensive.
  2. I didn't see this thread/bit of news when it started. Nady is out for the season? That's great news! I don't know how a Red Sox fan could argue that this as anything but a net-loss for the Yankees. Nady's 2008 combined AL/NL VORP of 37.5 would have put him just behind Jermaine Dye and just ahead of Ryan Howard. His WARP was 4.7--not record breaking by any stretch but more valuable than Damon and would have placed him 4th on the 2008 Yankees. He's not a great player, but he's a tough out with some power who is in his prime after his best season. Let him sit out the season injured, I'm happy to see the Yankees lose depth early-on.
  3. Can anyone explain how it is possible that the Yankees didn't sell out their home opener in their new stadium? Maybe I'm mistaken, but the attendence figures show that the stadium wasn't at capacity. Did they have large sections of stadium blocked off?
  4. This is the most absurd thread I've seen in a long time. So many arguments, so few numbers provided to back it up. Of course we should be using numbers, and there are numbers we could agree to use that have been painstakingly crafted to provide a comprehensive view of a player's seasons. Win Shares, VORP, WARP1, 2 or 3, OPS+, are a few examples. Or we could look at counting stats because, as Kilo correctly pointed out, it is worth looking at counting stats because the better hitter is the one who actually plays consistently for his team. The list of career OPS+ RHHs better than Manny is very similar to Crespo's list... that seems like a decent start. I don't know about McGwire, but his numbers were really solid despite his drawbacks. I think it is also important to include switch hitters. Mickey Mantle hit RH thousands of times and put up good numbers there. Yes, he was a switch hitter, but he could hit RH pretty damn well.
  5. Hopefully Ellsbury will be standing on second in a moment. Let Pedroia open the 9th if necessary.
  6. I think you could look back at our posts at the time, and see that most weren't advocating him being signed because he was 07 WS MVP, but because he was the best option at 3B available. I for one wasn't excited about the signing, but aside from A-Rod I don't remember anyone very impressive being available. There was discussion about Helton for awhile (no thanks). So, while most haven't really been too excited about Lowell, there haven't been many options. Teixeira--whether you are raising the point or Dojji is just being defensive--naturally comes up. Teixeira would have been a better option, certainly, but he wasn't available until this year, when Lowell and Youkilis both offered viable alternatives .
  7. They have the players to win, they just suck right now. Ellsbury, Pedroia, Ortiz doing nothing. Even when one of them gets on (Pedroia) there's no assurance that the next player (Ortiz) will do anything productive. It is pretty weak. How about Ellsbury Pedroia Youkilis Ortiz Bay Drew Lowell Varitek Green knock Ortiz down a spot and give Bay the 5 spot.
  8. There's no excuse for a Nomar homerun
  9. Yep, he was a good one. An all time great voice.
  10. It is embarassing for everyone involved. What the f*** are the Yankees doing paying $205m-plus to have their utility 1B/OF pitch during the 2nd week of the season? I mean, seriously.
  11. They're going to need to add something to change the dynamic on this team at some point in the next year or so. I don't feel like Matt Holliday is that player necessarily. Ortiz looks like he's never hit a HR before, Lowell and Drew look and act injury prone and hobbled. Ellsbury looks like he is surprised by every pitch. Baldelli is batting too often and Tek is the grandfather of the bunch. The pitching should be okay, but it isn't good enough to win the division for them... Tampa is too balanced.
  12. They don't look that old to me, but they do look pretty uninspired.
  13. I'm not sure what to make out of this team's struggles so far. The pitching has been decent, not great. The hitting has been subpar, not horrible. I'll be shocked if this team doesn't turn it around at some point this season, and it is amazing what a long season it is. The Yankees must be thinking the same thing, with Wang being so horrible. The Rays look really good, as do the Jays. Hopefully the Sox don't have to put Youkilis on the mound tonight...
  14. Penny looked pretty good. He settled in after not looking to have command early. His FB reached (on FOX) 96 I believe, but was generally sitting in the low 90s. (Gameday may differ). Overall he looked good for a #5.
  15. You can't really blame them. It isn't like there was a place to put Kendrick, and it isn't like Papelbon is easy to hit even when he is over the plate. Why waste a pitch with the bases loaded?
  16. Let's remember this game when things don't go the way we want when the Sox are rallying in the 9th another game... sometimes you get them, sometimes you don't.
  17. OH THANK GOD THAT IS OVER. JESUS. No fist pumping from Papelbon today, huh? Big win. Big win.
  18. They're avoiding the split. Maybe because of the runner on 3rd?
  19. Nice AB by Kendrick. How he can differentiate between slider and FB is beyond me. He's a really, really good hitter.
