  1. Yeah, it really sucks to have a good dialogue about how the game is played. You would clearly say the same thing about watching a game with Theo or Tito. I guess I'll take that as a compliment.
  2. I also think it is pretty irrational baseball fandom. The season is 162 games and people freak out with every pitch and out as if it is game 7 of the ALCS. Patience is a virtue and nowhere is this more true than in watching your favorite baseball team.
  3. Stupid Dice-K... oh wait...
  4. WARP 2008: Matsuzaka (7.9--Leads team) Wakefield (4.6--6th on team) 2007: Matsuzaka (4.3--7th on team) Wakefield (2.7--12th on team) Again, he's been disappointing this season, but his combined 12.2 WARP over the last two years makes him more valuable than Pedroia (7.4 + 4.2 = 11.6) or Youkilis (4.2 + 2.3 = 6.5) or Ortiz (7.9 + 2.8 = 10.7), or Drew (4.2 + 2.2 = 6.4). Frustrating to watch? Yep. Solid results in 2007 and 2008? Yes. Worthy of patience and support. Definitely.
  5. Haven't you felt the same way about Wakefield for the past, say, 7 years? I know I have. I just learn to live with it. Except that instead of throwing beachballs to home plate, Matsuzaka can actually force guys to swing and miss. Wake gets Ks too, but they are unpredictable at best.
  6. It's amazing how reactionary people are around here. Yeah, Dice is working through some s*** and he's looked mediocre at times. He also is a very accomplished and impressive pitcher who finished 4th in the Cy Young voting LAST YEAR. The same people that ballwash Penny after 3-4 impressive starts are calling for Matsuzaka's head. It's pretty lame loyalty, if you ask me. 1st place team, great (plentiful) rotation, organization that is the envy of all in baseball... and you want to send one of our longterm pitching options out to pasture after a slow start and some injury.
  7. I think Dice-K needs to work through this stuff, the same way Lester and Beckett did.
  8. I agree. Youkilis likely scores on that ball too, but Manny or Ortiz are standing at 3rd. That said, a pathetic, a FREAKING pathetic way to lose a game for the Mets. Weak. Should be a 3 game lead for the Sox. Someone should see if Castillo had a bet on the Yankees winning the game or something. MLB 2Bs just don't make that error, and certainly not in that situation. In reality it is a tough play (a MLB pop-up, and A-Rod really popped it up) but that's an excuse (on a very limited basis) for a GCL player, not an MLB regular.
  9. It will be interesting to see what they do with Smoltz and the current rotation. My preferred current 5 man rotation: Beckett Lester Wakefield Penny Smoltz Dice should get his s*** straight at AAA. Unfortunately, this isn't allowed per his contract. My prefered rotation in the post season: Beckett Lester Smoltz Dice-K (Wake as spot-starter) My prefered 2010 rotation: Beckett Lester Dice-K Buchholz Wake/Smoltz (better in 2009) Preferred 2011 Rotation Lester (age 27 season) Beckett (enters age 31 season signed to an uncharacteristic 5 year, $70m deal perhaps??) Matsuzaka (still just his age 30 season) Buchholz (age 26) Bowden (age 24) This group has unbelieveable potential.
  10. TB always concerns me, but interestingly the Angels have done really, really well against the Sox the past few years during the regular season. Not so much in the ALDS.
  11. He wasn't saying that during their winning streak...
  12. Tough night. Yankees need to pull this out for CC. 3-1 isn't insurmounable.
  13. He deserves it. Its a good time for the fans to encourage him and remind him that he's beloved.
  14. Nice just to see Papi hitting the ball hard. Nick Swisher, single handedly hurting his team with his baserunning two games in a row. Pretty weak sauce.
  15. No, and you won't find anyone here who thinks he's a bad option if he's available. He doesn't appear to be, or the discussions ended when the Marlins said "Buchholz, Bowden, Bard, Tazawa, Anderson and Kalish for Hanley"...
  16. Because it gives them exclusive opportunity to try to sign that player. Teams usually sign at least a few players they won't end up signing. HS stud has full ride to school X and demands, say, 2m signing bonus if he is going to give that up to sit in the minors for 4 years. Most teams pass. Sox come in and use a late round draft pick on the kid, see if they can convince him otherwise. Usually they can't or aren't willing to pay what it takes to convince them otherwise, but with the remaining talent in those rounds it isn't a huge loss to use the draft pick that way.
  17. According to ORS (and the following article) Gameday doesn't use a gun per-se, they use 3 high speed cameras and triangulate the data: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071002&content_id=2245402&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb I challenge him to get more accurate than: http://www.toysnjoys.com/radarball.jpg perhaps someday...
  18. The broadcasters on YES during last night's game kept mentioning that they were "waiting for Papelbon to bring that splitter" after he threw a number of FBs. Apparently they don't know that he doesn't throw it any more... I assume the Yankees know he doesn't. His splitter lives on reputation alone.
  19. Can't help but think of "Oh my goodness gracious! Of all the dramatic things I've ever seen!" Also Jacko, in all seriousness, really, really nice work on your draft coverage. You make this a better site. Thanks.
