1. He's one of those encouraging announcers who tries to make people feel good. I think a 3-man booth of Roberts, Eck and Orsillo would be great. I really like Eck, he has more insights about pitching than just about any announcer I've heard, right there with Hershesier.
2. I don't know if I would say he was too uptight. He may not have had much tolerance for people talking s*** or being dumb, but to me it would be worth it to placate him so he could have stayed around. While he was here I found he and ORS to be the most well-informed posters here, and it wasn't really close. The quality of this board went down when he stopped contributing.
3. It's a pretty quiet place. I found it when I saw the site sponsored one of the pages on Baseball-Reference.com, and was delighted to see JHB was there. Mostly just JHB posting things for people to read. I joined and he and I have had a few interesting discussions (to me at least). I always enjoyed his thorough posts and solid research. I'm not sure what it was that made him leave here but I think we're all worse off for it.
4. I think that was his point when he was asked about Bruney. He didn't come out and just start talking about him...
5. ...paging Karim Garcia ...paging Karim Garcia Let's play guess the pitcher:
Career | Age | IP | K | WHIP | W | L | SV Player A | 27 | 191 | 195 | 1.50 | 13 | 10 | 13 Player B | 27 | 482 | 619 | 1.106| 24 | 18 | 224
6. God this team is deadly. Taking their walks so late in the game. I love it.
7. http://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/AL/2009-standings.shtml I think it says they are 24-16. EDIT: Sorry CD. you got it.
8. This is one of those games that will be better when it is over. It has taken so long already with the delay, now all the runs.
9. Is there a better recent signing by this FO than Oki? He's been phenomenal, even when he struggles he's been above average.
10. Absolutely it is. He is nearly impossible for opponents to hit, for whatever reason.
11. It is also worth reminding you a700: 2006. 2006 was like 1986 happened all over again. Everyone was SO upset that the team didn't win and wasn't prepared.
12. Why did Ryan Howard try to tag Lowell on that play?
13. I suppose that's where we're different. I like to come to this board, or watch the game with friends, and actually know what I'm talking about. I think if Theo were here he would have a lot to contribute to the discussion and I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking that. Of course, with your professed lack of interest in the "heady" part of the game, it makes me wonder what you've been spouting off about for 14,491 posts.
14. Of course ms_sox, and I appreciate you taking a reasonable stand on the issue. I guess I don't see why the "serious discourse" from other threads can't carry into our reactions about how games go, and into the way that people watch the games themselves. Baseball is a game of probabilities. Sometimes the breaks go the Sox way, and sometimes they don't. I'm a few minutes behind, but I see the bases loaded with 2 outs and the Sox up by 3. Chances are they win this game.
15. Whether or not he regresses will be based on why he is struggling currently. If it is due to injury than that is possible. If it is due to location and not having fine-tuned his stuff since returning from injury, then I think there's reason to think that come later this year, or spring training next year, or the year after that, he'll look like a very different pitcher. He's simply too good to not look better than this. Again, injuries aside.
16. Wow. While I think that Lou would be entertaining to watch a game with, there's nobody whose brain I would rather pick about baseball than Theo. To each his (or her) own, I suppose.
