I don't deny that it is probably having an effect on his defense. A man his size has all the range of a fencepost. But clearly weight is not a thing that holds back hitters, because as I said, there have been plenty of fat hitters in the past. For that matter, there have been a lot of fat pitchers, so clearly the pitching motions (which, like hitting, involve a lot of rotation and movement while standing in one place) doesn't necessarily suffer if a guy is fat.
I'm just wondering why everyone focuses on it, and wondering if anyone thinks he would be a better hitter, or a better acquisition for the Red Sox, if he loses the weight.
