  1. Well done, NESN has done a nice job on discussing "everything Pedro". I still love listening to the guy talk...he had some great things to say after the game despite his results. He is a real class act.
  2. How come a player can't be considered a stud when he plays defense better than anyone else at his position? I only heard about Alex Gonzalez before this season but never took the time to really watch him before. Now I consider him the best defensive SS in the game. He makes our pitchers better, makes every play look effortless, and helps form the best left infield defense in the league. Whats more important...defense or offense?? After years of watching the Red Sox struggle on defense and always base the team around hitting....why not go with a change that is clearly working?? Why mess with the team?? This team would be better off looking for pitching as Julian Tavarez and Rudy Seanez continue to give up runs. Go with what the team does best.....defense is our strong point and I wouldn't mess with it.
  3. This may sound crazy but I would rather have Alex Gonzalez than Miguel Tejada. Tejada may hit the ball better but his fielding% is around .970. Meanwhile, Gonzo's fielding is around .995. Not to mention the difference in errors...nope I want a strong defensive SS. I'd rather stick with Gonzalez and sacrafice the runs (which we are already scoring) for a player who (although I like his character) will probably run into trouble with the steroid issue soon.
  4. It is a very good slider for anyone that has seen it. Its extremely inconsistant but there were times I saw him practically start a slider outside of a batter. The kid certainly has upside and good control with his fastball. Should be fun to watch him develop.
  5. This is not the first time the Red Sox have been rumored to have interest in Ryan Shealy. He does have a decent bat but he is a righty. I'm not quite sure how that plays into effect for the Red Sox bench when you consider both Willy Mo Pena and Gabe Kapler will be righty hitters off the bench. If you can get him for Abe Alvarez though...absolutly. The Red Sox could have him in Pawtucket as insurance and bring up Hee Seop Choi to be the lefty we are looking for. The Red Sox could also consider using him in another deal this summer.
  6. Those teams could trump the Red Sox but perhaps they don't want to. None of us have any clue if those teams are high on Dontrelle Willis or not. It is possible they don't like him and would rather stick with there prospects. The LAA shouldn't be considered because everything I hear says they are not making a run this season and could be selling instead. Also, how do we know the Marlins aren't real high on some of the Red Sox prospects?? How do we know the GM isn't in love with Craig Hansen or Ellsbury or Pedroia or ANY of them??
  7. Craig Hansen and Jacoby Ellsbury are a pile of crap?
  8. Damn the price jumped already I see. We were able to get a 25 year old pitcher plus a proven 3B and a middle reliever for 2 blue chip prospects. I had no idea Dontrelle Willis is that much better. What team would go for something like that?
  9. Now I don't disagree because I'm high on both players as well...however...we should consider long term what the team will look like. Would you rather have: 1. Papelbon in the rotation and Hansen as the closer 2. Papelbon as the closer and Hansen as the setup man 3. Papelbon as the closer and Dontrelle Willis in the starting rotation No doubt Hansen can help us now but not close to the amount Dontrelle Willis would. As for Jacoby Ellsbury I really like what the kid brings. The problem I see is he doesn't hit for great power numbers and neither does Coco Crisp. I would expect the Red Sox to have a outfield of Coco Crisp, Willy Mo Pena, and another power bat when Manny ends his career. Tough call but I think the options are there if the Red Sox really did want to make a deal of some kind.
  10. You don't think they would go for a Craig Hansen and David Murphy deal??....they need outfield help. If not then what about Craig Hansen and Jacoby Ellsbury??
  11. Back to the topic... Since John Smoltz was recently injured his stock may have dropped. I'd be more nervous now making a move and trading away "anything" for a guy who could help this season and possibly not contribute at all if injured. Its still a while until the trade deadline but I'm no longer that excited about making a move.
  12. I guess we could just hope Jason Johnson works out then
  13. I guess the question is: Are we more worried about replacing Mark Loretta for next season or finding a proven starting pitcher to help us win this season?? Really no wrong way of answering. You can want to win this year or want to build for next season. I don't see Dustin Pedroia being the next Derek Jeter or David Wright but....who knows.
  14. Agreed and if you think about it....we have no need for Dustin Pedroia either. Alex Gonzalez is possibly the best defensive shortstop in the game and Mark Loretta is solid in the field and with a glove. I like having them around to be honest....this is the most solid infield the Red Sox have had since....a long time After tonight we can probably scrap that Anthony Reyes for John Smoltz rumor.
  15. he probably would have....such a sad story
  16. In the end the Red Sox will have a 1-2 ace combo with Josh Beckett and Jon Lester.....with three dynamite bullpen arms in Papelbon, Hansen, and Delcarmen .....that has a great chance to win us more than one championship but no guarantees. My answer would be "no" despite the fact the true goal in sports is to win the championship.
  17. haha wow that was quick. I knew people would jump all over my statement of waiting until Wells comes back. I agree its a stretch but its not completely out of the question. David Wells may just be waiting for the season to progress further so he only plays half a year and is completely effective.... I wouldn't hold my breathe though
  18. A groundball pitcher is perfect for this Red Sox team... Consider David Pauley is a ground ball pitcher as was Kyle Snyder.....neither of them come close to the experience of Jason Johnson. I'm not crossing my fingers for anything incredible but it could work for a couple starts. Maybe he can survive until David Wells comes back.
  19. Why do they need major league ready pitching prospects?? They are not in contention and chances are this is not something easily fixed for next season. If anything they will lose Andrew Jones and make things more difficult. We traded Edgar Renteria for Coco Crisp thanks to the help of Atlanta....was that a rip off?? Dustin Pedroia is still considered one of the top infield prospects in the game...I don't see this as a rip off. Its possible the Red Sox would consider Manny Delcarmen since Francona seems to have issues allowing him to pitch full innings. Jermaine Van Buren is another reliever along with Abe Alvarez, Buchholz.....etc. There are options here for a 40 year old pitcher who will help us for half a season and "maybe" next year.
  20. Woah woah what?? Where the hell did I say I would trade Hansen or Lester for Smoltz?? I think I stated twice that I am not interested in trading either of them for anything. I might be the biggest Jon Lester fan here....I think you didn't read my post correctly. I said I am not excited about trading either of them. I said I would be willing to trade Dustin Pedroia for John Smoltz.
  21. Great defensive play he made tonight. Was that throw straight into the dugout or did it bounce before it got there?
  22. When talking about Lester and Hansen I'm not too excited but Dustin Pedroia for a top of the rotation ace.....absolutly. The ultimate goal is to win the World series. If the Red Sox were to lose Dustin Pedroia it would not by any means cripple there future. John Smoltz (all time leader in playoff wins I believe) would be a huge upgrade and give us an amazing rotation. As much as I like Jon Lester in the rotation....just think if we got David Wells back. Schilling, Smoltz, and Wells are three great pitchers to have in the playoffs. Not to mention we still have Josh Beckett (good success in the playoffs) and Tim Wakefield (extremely reliable). With a rotation like that I could see the Red Sox creating space in the division and being set up well for a strong playoff run. It is possible to work with the Braves on a deal....we already did it once this season.
  23. He is still only 25 years old. He will continue to get better control and would expect him to have some huge years while in his prime.
  24. The more I think about it that makes more sense. Not just for the Red Sox but for the Braves who are in serious need of young arms in the pen. Those guys (especially Alvarez) may be better in the NL. but you wouldn't give up Dustin Pedroia for him?? I don't see Pedroia having a future with the Red Sox....he doesn't have enough power. He would be better suited for NL baseball.
  25. I watched the game on ESPN the other night and they were discussing the possible availability of John Smoltz. They even had a interview with him talking about that chance to move on. John Smoltz mentioned its part of the game for struggling teams to trade veterans for young talent and is ready for a move. Instead of discussing pitchers who will cost an arm and a leg we could talk about a true experienced veteran who has tons of playoff experience and still has great stuff on the mound. Smoltz may only be good for a year (maybe 2) at the close age of 40 but he still has the pitches and velocity to win ball games and would certainly solidify our starting rotation. Considering the Atlanta Braves may be losing Andrew Jones to free agency this is a team who could have a few holes. Marcus Giles is another player who could be moving on so perhaps the Red Sox would be willing to move Dustin Pedroia and David Murphy for John Smoltz. Thoughts?
