  1. The arm-pit of America. I lived there for 6 months and heard nothing but ambulance, police, and fire truck sirens. That city should get flushed out to sea.
  2. The Red Sox front office is not stupid...I'm sure if they saw Josh Beckett as a liability going into the season they would not have him in the rotation. At this point I think we can expect he will be healthy going into the season and doing a better job selecting his pitches. Does anyone really think Josh Beckett will continue this downward spiral with the Red Sox staff sitting back and allowing it to happen? Something will change
  3. Its too bad for the Minnesota Twins and the recent issues with Liriano. If he were healthy...I don't care who the other three pitchers are...Liriano and Santana would simply be insane back-to-back. If healthy I think they are the best two pitchers in baseball.
  4. I wouldn't target either of them. Closers come and go quickly...even the best only last a few years. Its rare to see someone make a long career in that role. I'd be shocked if Mike Gonzalez can survive 3 years as an effective closer. Brad Lidge has better stuff than both Cordero and Gonzalez and look how his stock has dropped because of a rough year.
  5. "something to prove" usually means a player coming back from an injury or not completely fulfilling their potential. It does not mean they "suck". Daisuke Matsuzaka has never sucked in his career but I think its safe to say he has something to prove wouldn't you? I believe every player going to a new team has something to prove to his new fans and teammates. Basically in the case of free agents JD Drew and Julio Lugo....they have something to prove to the Boston crowd that they are worth the money.
  6. A team with no identity?? I disagree because I love the way this team looks. Its not exactly a team of stars but a team of players out to prove something... Matsuzaka, Beckett, Papelbon, Pineiro, Crisp, Lugo, Romero, Drew etc...all have something to show Red Sox Nation. Meanwhile you have Ortiz, Lowell, Varitek, Youkilis, Schilling, Wakefield, Mirabelli, etc. who are good clubhouse guys that all are competitive and know what it takes to win. Adding a player like Todd Helton (Rockies were never that good) would be a welcome addition to the clubhouse. I'm sure he would be looking to contibute as much as possible to a team built to win a championship. Also, if there is one thing Francona is good at (probably the only thing) its getting a team to gel.
  7. I'm not a fan of giving up young talent for an aging player...however...that would be a nice lineup I would place Julio Lugo and Coco Crisp at the top of the lineup to give us some serious speed. They can both make things happen on the bases and having Ortiz, Ramirez, Helton, Drew, Varitek, and Youkilis behind them...there are no easy outs in this lineup. Not to mention I think Dustin Pedroia will make pitchers work as he regains control of his swing. 1. Julio Lugo 2. Coco Crisp 3. David Ortiz 4. Manny Ramirez 5. Todd Helton 6. JD Drew 7. Kevin Youkilis 8. Jason Varitek 9. Dustin Pedroia ....impressive lineup to go with an impressive rotation and a deep bullpen.
  8. I'm not THAT excited about this deal. Based on the trend of Todd Helton (reduced power and certainly passed his prime) how much of a difference would he really make? I have no problem with the current defense on the corners (both Lowell and Youk have good gloves). I would expect Helton to hit 20 HRs but is that any better than Youkilis or Lowell? Todd Helton may do well hitting in Fenway but will it be any better than Colorado? (best hitting park in baseball). I'm not trying to say Todd Helton is not a good player because thats stupid. I'm thinking the young arms can make a larger difference on our baseball team in the long run than an older Todd Helton. You can bet between Delcarmen, Hansen, and the three B boys....one of them (if not more) will become real good pitchers. Wouldn't it suck to trade the wrong one and give the Rockies a top young pitcher for an expensive past-his-prime 1st baseman who is losing his power?
  9. agreed As for Ellsbury and Spann not being on the roster...its not like they are going to make the team out of spring training or will be asked to contribute until (maybe) later in the year. The Red Sox have a deep enough team that they don't need these guys right now. Work with them outside of the major leauge team and continue to develop them for an easy transition to the majors.
  10. In the end it doesn't matter how your farm system is as a whole. What you want is the ability to develop those 3-5 players who can make a difference. Between all the leagues in the minors you are lucky to get a few players who can really contribute. If the Red Sox can develop Ellsbury, Buccholz, Bowden, Bard and Place...then I'm happy. In my mind those are the guys with the biggest upside who might have a shot at making the Red Sox squad. Even then I think its a bigger possibility 2-3 of those guys gets traded because there just isn't room on the major league team.
  11. Anyone mentioning Carl Pavano for prospects.....why would any team offer any prospects for him. Pavano is no longer effective after missing so much time in the past couple seasons. Teams that are desperate for pitching would most likely look internally before even considering picking up Pavano for nothing, let alone a trade. If a baseball team made a trade for Pavano they are just doing the Yankees a favor...thats all. As for the Diamondbacks trading for Randy Johnson. I can't go into great depth until I know the final deal but......trading young players for a 43 year old coming off surgery and owed tons of money? Do the D-backs really think Randy Johnson will get them to the playoffs and win the World Series? That has to be the plan cause why else would you make this move? Clearly not looking to the future of the team which they should after parting with Shawn Green and Luis Gonzalez. Time to start the rebuilding process.....or on second thought....do the Yankees a favor.
  12. so at 24-25? years old we have determined what kind of pitcher Manny Delcarmen is and what he never can be......interesting......alright lets bring in Bryce Cox
  13. At times he did not pitch that bad for us. I bet if you determined his stats through the first 4 innings alone of all the games he pitched....you may be suprised. As a long reliever (something you don't use often anyways) he may be a hidden gem.
  14. Dustin Pedroia vs. Marcus Giles vs. Mark Loretta......go with Pedroia....he plays with emotion, is only 23, and showed signs last year of being a good hitter. Give the kid time and he could be better than both Giles and Loretta.
  15. Do not trade Josh Beckett. He had a decent first season in the AL East and has not hit his prime. He had some bumps in the road but with his talent and hitting his prime years....I only see him getting better and more comfortable. Roger Clemens is overrated based on the fact he has been pitching in the NL the last couple seasons. Would I take him in the Red Sox rotation? Absolutly. Would I give up Josh Beckett and replace him with Clemens? Hell no. Unless K-Rod, Houston Street, or Joel Zumaya is involved somehow....I'm real reluctant to trading a top of the rotation starter.
  16. I mentioned this in another thread but this seems like the better place for it. Turns out the Atlanta Braves are interested in aquiring Rocco Baldelli. If that was the case they would probably be looking to move Andruw Jones since both play CF. I would think this is where Manny Ramirez comes into play. Either the Atlanta Braves would have interest in Manny or would be looking to make a three way deal in which Andruw Jones would end up in Boston. I might be reading too much into nothing.
