  2. I think I'll watch hockey instead.
  3. Hale Hired The Red Sox named DeMarlo Hale as their new third base coach today. Hale replaces Dale Sveum, who on Wednesday was named third base coach for the Milwaukee Brewers after serving in the same capacity the last two seasons for the Red Sox. Advance scout Dave Jauss and Triple-A manager Ron Johnson were both potential in-house candidates for the position according to the Globe's Gordon Edes. A native of Chicago, the 44-year-old Hale served as the Texas Rangers' first base coach for the last four seasons. Hale was a widely respected former player and manager in the Red Sox farm system before joining the Rangers in 2000 where he was on manager Jerry Narron's staff along with current Red Sox manager Terry Francona who was the Rangers' bench coach. Both the Dallas Morning News and Fort Worth Star Telegram reported on Wednesday that the Red Sox had asked for, and received, permission to speak with Hale about Boston's third base coaching position. In Nov. 2003, the Red Sox interviewed Hale for the managerial opening created by Grady Little's departure and eventually filled by Terry Francona. According to the Globe’s Bob Hohler in a Nov. 2003 story: "Hale, who interviewed with the Rangers last year for the managerial opening that Buck Showalter filled, would (have) become the first African-American manager in Red Sox history. He left the Sox organization after the 1999 season when he was passed over for a promotion to Triple-A Pawtucket despite winning Minor League Manager of the Year honors from Baseball America, The Sporting News, and USA Today's Baseball Weekly for leading Double-A Trenton to a first-place finish in the Eastern League with a record of 92-50. "Hale managed a number of future Sox players on the '99 team in Trenton, including Shea Hillenbrand, Tomo Ohka, Sun Woo Kim, and Paxton Crawford, none of whom remain with the organization. The team also included David Eckstein, who won a World Series ring with the Angels in 2002, and Adam Everett, who was traded to the Astros for Carl Everett. "A 17th-round pick out of Southern University in 1983, Hale played first base and outfield for four seasons in the Sox system, rising as high as Double A before he finished his playing career with a brief stint in Oakland's system in 1988. From there, Hale ventured into enemy territory, working from 1989-92 as an instructor at the Bucky Dent Baseball School in Florida. "The Sox hired Hale as a Double-A coach in '92 and launched his managerial career at Single-A Fort Lauderdale in '93. He spent three seasons managing Single-A teams, then three more years at Trenton before former GM Dan Duquette hired Gary Jones to manage at Pawtucket in 2000 despite Hale's outstanding season in '99. At that, Hale joined the Texas organization, managing their Triple-A affiliate for two years. "In all, Hale posted a 634-614 record in nine minor league seasons before he joined the Rangers in 2001 as first base coach for manager Jerry Narron. Francona was Narron's bench coach," Hohler's story concluded. Hale and his wife Carol reside in Orlando, Fla.

  8. Yankees hire Bowa With Joe Torre having finally decided to return to the Yankees in 2006, he moved quickly to overhaul his support staff, hiring Larry Bowa as the Yankees' new third base coach. According to a major league executive, Bowa agreed to a one-year, $500,000 contract Thursday afternoon. Bowa's hiring is a controversial one, since he replaces Luis Sojo, who was popular with the club's Spanish-speaking players. It is unclear whether Sojo will be retained in any capacity. But Torre called Bowa directly Thursday, indicating the manager may indeed have the input he was promised by George Steinbrenner. Once Bowa expressed interest, general manager Brian Cashman followed up with a second call, after which the deal was quickly finalized. Cashman's involvement with Bowa's hiring may indicate he's leaning toward reenlisting with the Yankees as well. Although the GM continues to tell industry peers he's still undecided, there's a growing consensus that Cashman's return is all but assured now. An announcement will come next week, well before the Oct. 31 deadline before his contract expires. Bowa, known for his intense, driven personality, worked part of last season as an ESPN analyst. His last managerial job was with the Phillies, from 2001 until the last two games of the 2004 season. Sources say Lee Mazzilli, who was fired as the Orioles' manager midway through the 2005 season, is also being strongly considered to join Torre's coaching ranks.
  9. huh? look at the date on that article and look at the date today....Let that sink in. last week was not October 21st.
  10. George Overpays Everyone...
  11. No problem, that clears a starting slot for Papelbon. Maybe they can trade him for a decent reliever - Linebrink or Otsuka from the Padres would be nice, throw Dave Roberts in as well.
  12. http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/ http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/2006_Sox_schedule_EB.jpg The Red Sox today announced their 2006 schedule and ticket prices, which represent a 5 percent overall increase from 2005. The team, which will open the season in Texas on Monday, April 3, will keep prices the same for about 70 percent of tickets.

  14. This would be a really difficult decision for me if I were the owners or Theo. Beltran is about 5 years younger than Manny. His hitting could greatly improve by being at Fenway and with a hitting coach like Papa Jack. Defensively he would be better. I really, really like Manny, but I think I might at least be willing to take a really close look at the numbers - objectively. There is no doubt in my mind that Pedro is pushing for Manny to join him in NY. This deal just might get done. especially since the red sox proposed it.
  15. why? if we did resign johnny, we move him to left because its a shorter distance to the plate, and put beltran in center. and keep trot in right.
  16. Yeah you're right, we shave the rookies heads so I guess I would consider that hazing.
  17. Hazing the rookies is one of my favorite parts of the season. we shave the rookies heads in 2 1/2 week on my hockey team (right after training camp) , then all season they take out the goals and put them back and they pick up the pucks. Just wondering, whoever is on a school sports team what do you make the freshmen/rookies do?
  18. I don't get why they didn't do a movie about Rocky's son. They set it all up in the 4th and 5th movies, but it's still gonna be about Rocky. Anyways, rumor has it Antonio Tarver is going to appear in the movie as heavyweight, Mason Dixon.
  19. 10.19 Update -- ESPN's Peter Gammons tells BDD: "Three weeks ago his catcher agreed to become manager only if he withdrew his name from being posted, and he did. Ishii has asked the club not to renege on their promise to post him... Craig Shipley (Red Sox Special Assistant to the General Manager/Player Development and International Scouting) likes him, but they won't pay closer money, and they think he'll get that. Their presence in Japan is unrivaled, and they have made two big signings in Taiwan."
