Schilling - will never quit and go out into the sunset after a season like this. He will be trying like mad to get into shape and at least have one more good season. He's staying for the full amount.
AJ Burnett - beloved by John Henry, and I think we'll find a way to get him here. Even though his ERA and K totals aren't eyepopping, he's got a good WHIP and low OBA so since he doesn't give up a lot of hits to begin with the AL transition should be a little smoother. He's the classic case of a guy needing a change of scenery AND a manager like Tito Francona (who I believe will be re-signed)
Jon Papelbon- earned a spot in the rotation. The only changes he needs to make are small refinements that can be done during the offseason, AAA or the bullpen would be absolute wastes of his time, and our resources. I think we can count on him for 15 wins and a 3.00 ish ERA.
Tim Wakefield -deserved better this season, that last start on 3 days rest ruined an ERA that should have been below 4 for the first time since 2002. In any case Wakefield is a very consistent pitcher (year in an year out) who can beat the good teams as well as the bad. Excellent 4th starter.
Matt Clement- just as Wakefield is a great 4th starter, Clement is a great 5th starter. The type of guy that COULD be great, or could be average... Just the X-Factor you need as a 5th starter. He'd also be pitching agains the #5 from other teams and rack up quite a few wins. I think he'll be back to post a
BULLPEN- Obviously a big problem with the Red Sox this season... right?
I'm not so sure... bear with me.
Guys like Mantei, Halama, Gonzalez, etc. brought the bullpen down. But look at who we have on hand.
Timlin, Bradford, Myers, hansen, DiNardo, Delcarmen... look into farnsworth and todd jones also, and another lefty
So say Chad Bradford for around 2 million, Mantei for another incentive based deal, and Myers for about 500K-1M...
