  1. As I stated in the thread named "Newsday Article," I think Tom Glavine would be a great addition to the 2004 Boston Red Sox.
  2. Thanks for your opinions..... Seems like he's a little ways off. His fastball was still only in the upper 80s (they expect mid 90s I believe) when he threw in Pawtucket. I'm all for giving him a shot to prove his worth in the major leagues, but this might end up being a timing issue. Will there be enough time before July 31st to give Kim enough innings to make a decision on whether or not he fills the pitching void?
  3. a Davis/Alomar Jr duo behind the plate certainly doesn't scare most people. Seems like the White Sox are looking to make a splash in 2004, because with Magglio possibly gone, Frank Thomas having another good year (and getting old) they are interested in winning NOW. Who might they go after? Charles Johnson in Colorado used to be considered one of the top catchers in baseball. Since going to Colorado, he's been unimpressive. Dan Wilson -- A seattle veteran catcher, who probably will hand a lot of playing time over to Olivo. This doesn't seem likely, since I bet if Chicago wanted Wilson they'd have gotten him in the Freddy Garcia trade. Jason Kendall -- Probably the better catcher of the three, and probably the most tradable of the three. Has a big contract, but is still a solid defender and contact hitter. NO POWER this year, though. Any other ideas? This is all I could think of for veteran catchers on non-contending teams.
  4. I think Glavine would THRIVE in Boston. Keep in mind: He's from right outside of Boston, meaning he'd waive a no-trade clause to come here. I remember Glavine was one pitcher who was awesome in Coors' field. He's a groundball pitcher, so the Fenway dimensions shouldn't really affect him. He signed a 3 year deal with the Mets before LAST season, meaning he has this year, and one more year after that. There MAY be an option after 2005, not sure. Johnson is a LONG SHOT.... Tek33rules, Jones certainly doesn't compare to Mays, but he's a quality player. Don't you think (if he were to come to Boston) that would spell the departure of the big contract guys? (Tek,Petey,Nomar,Lowe?)
  5. I get pumped up EVERY time the sox play the Yankees...I just hope the Red Sox get pumped up and play hard for 3 games!
  6. I want people's opinions on what the team should do with Kim when he's healthy. The way I see it, there are three options: 1. Trade him -- I've heard rumors about Colorado being interested, but that was a month ago. 2. Starting Rotation -- This would return Arroyo to the bullpen. 3. Bullpen, Long relief/setup -- Keep Arroyo in the rotation, move Kim to the pen. What I'd do: Option # 3. Kim had the most amount of success in Boston as a reliever. I think if he's traded now the team doesn't get a lot of value back for him. Perhaps let him pitch in the bullpen and see how he does against MLB hitters. I'd rather see Arroyo in the rotation and Kim in the bullpen.
  7. enough about myself: live in Vermont, love the Red Sox, hate the Yankees. as you've probably noticed already, very emotional about the team.
  8. Hey, no game today...gotta chat about something! Here's the text from the article: What I want to talk about from this: Randy Johnson: If he's available, GO AFTER HIM! I still think he won't be though. Imagine a Curt/Randy reunion in Boston! Tom Glavine: I wanted Boston to sign him two years ago when the Braves let him walk away. He says he'd consider a trade here, and Glavine really steps his game up when it counts. Great team player Andruw Jones: A lot of people think his defense is going downhill since a couple years ago when he was being touted as "The Next Willie Mays." Still, he's got a cannon arm, but makes a lot of money. I think I'd stay away from Jones. Russ Ortiz: Also a guy who steps it up when it counts. A warrior who loves the big games. He's my third choice here (in a perfect world), but if the Mets hang in it, and the Dbacks refuse to move Johnson....Ortiz would be a nice alternative. Thoughts?
  9. I've heard the Steve Finley rumors, but not lately. I would say upgrade defense, because errors have killed the team lately, but I don't see any players really hurting us consistently enough to warrent replacing them.....or even any players who would be better than what we've got. Steve Finley would be a solid pickup, he's got a great bat and good outfield D. I don't see him playing every day though with the players the Sox already have. Great bench player though if he's willing to take the hit in playing time. Pitching should still be the priority. Garcia's gone, who else seems available?
  10. Another reason for optimism: Winning 2 of 3 from the Phillies. Yes, the loss was ugly.....but winning a series is a start!
  11. Great trade for both sides I think. Ben Davis was always a top prospect for San Diego, but couldn't turn that potential into success. Maybe Ozzie Guillen can help turn him around? Who knows....Either way, getting Freddy Garcia (a great pitcher, who LOVES big games) is a great move. The Mariners got a good trio of players here too. Reed is a good prospect, Olivo is already having success at the major league level, and the Mariners are going NOWHERE this year. They needed to get younger, and they did exactly that. Bravo! Again, Kenny Williams proves he's not afraid to pull the trigger....
  12. I'm not TOO worried because it's still only June, but this "skid" has lasted 2 months now....time to snap out if it guys!
  13. That's true about Baltimore probably not wanting the pair before they prove themselves. It was just an idea I threw out there... It surprised me to hear you say Mora typically struggles in the second half, but I looked up the stats, and by golly, you're right! His average has fallen off after the ASB in every season since 2000 (and thats as far back as I looked). Although last year he only had 69 ABs after the break.....
  14. Make no mistake about it, the Sox NEED a good game from Pedro today. Like we've been saying for a month now, they need to start a hot streak soon, as the Yankees are on deck. Philly is a solid team (37-33), but let's face it, the Sox are a BETTER team. Tonight, Pedro v Abbott, there's no question who the FAVORITE is, but Pedro needs to be Pedro and the offense/defence needs to get into shape. I'm a lot calmer now (as you noticed I was VERY frustrated after the series with the Twins) but the Sox need a good showing tonight!
  15. Gordon Edes of the Boston Globe said something VERY interesting, I'm going to quote him here: "Last season, through 71 games, they were 41-30, and they wound up with 95 wins." Considering they're 40-31 right now....That puts things into perspective a bit.
  16. I actually read a report that Baltimore might be interested in Mendoza. If the Sox could make a deal involving Mendoza and maybe Kim to Baltimore...what could they get? Think a deal could be constructed to get Melvin Mora? he's a quality player, can play all OF positions, SS, 3B. Here's my idea: Ramiro Mendoza BK Kim cash FOR Melvin Mora
  17. While I'm satisfied with this deal for the reasons that have already been stated (Beltran isn't playing for the Yankees, the Red Sox future is intact), this deal confuses me a bit: Billy Beane reportedly WASN'T sold on Scott Williamson as closer, even though he's got way more closing experience? I'm not sold on Dotel as closer. He was MUCH more dominant as an 8th inning man. Kansas City got exactly what they wanted in this deal: Congratulations to them! Houston also made out pretty well. I don't know anything about John Buck (Zenny, help me out here ;-) ), but it seems like Dotel/Buck for 3 months of Beltran isn't that bad a deal. I say Oakland got the raw deal in this one (a shocker, considering they've been pretty good at mid-season trades in the past).
  18. A lot of stuff being thrown around.....I'll throw in my 2 cents: Crespo being the primary IF backup is what scares me. I have very little confidence in the man. With Mueller back in the fold, that strengthens the bench, because someone very good (Belly, Pokey, Youk, or even Billy) will be on the bench. Make no mistake: Championship teams have strong DEPTH, not just strong starting 9. I am a firm believer that those powerful Braves teams were unsuccessful in the playoffs because of a lack of depth (a whole different topic altogether). One thing to consider about Youk vs Mueller is youth/experience. Many good hitters have gone through serious performance problems after seeing teams the second time around....
  19. Seems everyone's got an opinion on this issue, and it's either one or the other. I'm kinda in the middle right now, having a hard time deciding who I'd play. Mueller is a veteran, who isn't a batting champ threat every year, but he is a quality player. His defense is also very good. Youkilis has given me NO reason to dislike him, or any reason really to think he deserves to be sent down or sitting. This may end up a numbers game, with Youk going down because he makes less money. Sad, but true. Pokey might play the biggest role here, because keep in mind: Mueller can play second base too. If Pokey's out a while, we may see that happen too just to get these guys playing time. Terry has shown that he isn't afraid to juggle guys in and out of the lineup, or move positions around. I think the best part about Mueller being back soon is: No more Crespo!
  20. I agree. The big killer with Tek has been his performance with RISP. It can be summed up in one word: "Pathetic."
  21. The reason to toy with the team, is that they are not playing good baseball this year. They had a good April, but as I've stated, have been a .500 team since. This team is in need of re-enforcements! Johnny Damon's speed is an asset, but Terry Francona doesn't take advantage of it!
  22. The series with the Twinkies had nothing to do with Pedro, and EVERYthing to do with this team's lack of intensity, and clutch hitting. Three GIDPs in key situations in a 4-2 loss?!? David comes through to tie the game, the team loses on an error and a sacrifice with the best pitcher on the mound? Pedro's only 1/5th of the rotation, and 1/25th of the team. He certainly isn't helping, but he ISN'T the reason the team's played .500 since May. With last year's team, I'd take a 7IP, 4 run performance from Wake every time. He'd win most games. This team just doesn't have that same feeling.
  23. This loss was not Francona's fault. It wasn't even Foulke's fault.
  24. It's not just the last 3 series. This team is playing .500 ball since May 1!!!! On April 30th, the Sox were 15-6. A pretty good. On June 24th, the Sox are 40-31. I did the math, they're exactly 25-25 since the end of April. Playing like that DOESN'T get you the division title, it doesn't get you the wild card...hell, in the AL East, it won't even get you SECOND PLACE!!! The Sox don't need Beltran. But if they play .500 bal until July 31st...they wont have a chance to catch Oakland/Anaheim for the wild card!
  25. More venting frustration than anything else.....but the Sox need to do SOMEthing to get the team going....and possibly something radical. Maybe just ONE of these moves
