  1. Yeszir, He's quality. I haven't seen him in Boston yet, but I've had the pleasure of watching him play in person in Montreal (which is actually why I started this thread). It's actually probably good that he gets a few games under his belt before he goes to Boston, so the fans know what he's capable of before they boo him... Nomar is a great player...but I think Orlando Cabrera will be better for this organization for a few reasons: Better defense. Even when both players are 100%, Orlando's got a GOLD GLOVE. Decent Offense. Curt Schilling himself said Orlando is capable of 40 2B 20 HR .270/.280. Durability. Orlando plays every game and plays hard. He's cheaper, younger, and doesn't have an attitude.
  2. I agree with you, sara, that we should have gotten a pitcher, but let's try to keep trade talks in the correct threads.... Tonight it's Schilling vs Bell. We've got to start a winning streak.
  3. Isn't this a little harsh for a guy who poured his heart and soul into this team for seven years? Granted, in 2004 he was a bitter, hate-filled man....but he WAS the face of the organization since coming up here in 97. That being said, let the Orlando Cabrera era begin. I personally, am excited.
  4. Sara, No matter how much you dislike Bellhorn, you can't think he's worse than Gutierrez! Can you?
  5. Zennny, I'm not positive he'll hit for a lot of power. It's a lot easier to hit homers in college against worse competition, and with the aluminium bats. A lot of doubles probably...
  6. Theo compared Pedoria to David Eckstein. He does seem to love Pedoria (along with Shoppach, Youk, Alvarez). He was saying on WEEI last night that shortstop is the deepest position in the minors (with Pedoria, Ramirez, Lara, Soto)...so some of these guys will eventually move to another team or another position. My guess is that Pedoria would move to second base if the other guys pan out. Gotta love a guy who hits .400 at Augusta... Looks like he was 1-4 (a double) in Sarasota in his debut.
  7. Hanley hit pretty well in Sarasota (.310) and is still young. We'll have to keep an eye on him in Portland and see how he responds to the promotion. He's got a lot of talent (according to prospect people) it's nice to see him having some success.
  8. I think the Red Sox are going to try to pick up an arm, but not Heredia. With the waiver deals, it gets messy because any team behind you in the standings can put a claim on a player. This might actually be an advantage for the Sox, because they can block the Yankees from picking up someone, and I don't think the Yankees can block the Sox at all. The only players I see passing through waivers are players with big contracts. Guys like Larry Walker, Preston Wilson etc. What's the risk in putting in a claim on a guy like Roberto Alomar ($800,000), Jose Mesa ( It should be interesting. I would be surprised to see the Red Sox make a significant move, because teams like the White Sox, Angels, etc wouldn't be afraid to pick up the extra $$ to keep us from getting an impact player.
  9. I think it's a little early to be talking extension. He's played 2 games with the Sox. I think the Red Sox will probably wait, to see how he hits at Fenway, in a pennant race (he's never been in one in Montreal), how he gels with this team, etc. I like Orlando a lot already though.
  10. This is a bit of a broad topic, I have a lot to discuss here: Bellhorn out at least 2 weeks: The good: Youk gets more playing time. I really like Youkilis. The bad: Our backup infielder is Ricky Gutierrez?!? Ouch. Pokey out at least 1 more week, possibly 3. Ouch again. Imagine if the Sox have an infield of Mueller, Cabrera, Reese, Mientkiewicz.... Best infield defense in the AL? I have to say it would be among the best. Is Gutierrez enough? I can't imagine this team's happy right now carrying ONE backup infielder.
  11. We need Schilling to have a good game, plain and simple. I heard Terry Francona say Dave Roberts would probably start today. Doug M will start at first, Millar will probably DH. We honestly should beat up on Rob Bell tonight.
  12. I have to listen on the radio, but it sounded like Orlando made some pretty impressive plays! I was able to see him in person in Montreal (I live in VT so Montreal's closer) and I was impressed (as I stated in a different post). McCarty can't be blamed for his error. He lost it in the dome. Overall, a good win. McCarty and Youk came through when we needed them. It sucks Bellhorn will be out at least 2 weeks?!? But I'm excited Youk will get more playing time...
  13. This little spat Nomar's having right now with Red Sox management is really getting on my nerves. Nomar: Get over it. Three stooges (Larry, John, Tom): Get over it. It's over. Nothing can be done about it now. Orlando's our shortstop, Nomar you're playing in Chicago now.
  14. Did the Yankees place these guys on waivers or are you speculating? Heredia isn't getting batters out (we already have guys that do that), and Lofton has an attitude problem if he isn't playing every day...Which he most certainly wouldn't in Boston
  15. I think Nomar's hatred toward's Boston's ownership was his own fault, really. If he'd accepted the very fair deal of 4 years, $60 million we wouldn't be talking about his future with the Cubs.... Nomar got greedy. He said things like "I love Boston, and I want to retire here" to the fans, but he should have said "I love Boston, and I'd love it if they overpaid me to stay here. Otherwise, I'm gunna hit the market and let someone else overpay for me." In multiple reports, it states that he wasn't the most friendly with his teammates, he never spoke with media, and he was too sensative. I hate to say "addition by subtraction," because Nomar is a great player, and a professional on the field...but he can't possibly have been well-liked in the clubhouse. I keep saying this in different threads....but I'll say it again. Superstars don't win championships. TEAMS win championships. We (The Red Sox) picked up 3 MLB players who should really help this team.
  16. I agree with you, Hoss. I read the reports today that Nomar told the Sox he was going to have to spend some time on the DL.... Now he's saying he's perfectly healthy. Nomar was the Red Sox icon, and I've flip-flopped on the issue of letting him go vs signing him multiple times since December (or when the A-Rod crap first came out) and until recently, was leaning towards keeping him. He's a fantastic player and has meant a lot to this city and this team... but this was the final straw for me. It was time to let Nomar go and get whatever you can for him. I think the Sox did well in that respect...
  17. After the tough weekend vs Minnesota, the Sox are 9.5 games back of the Yankees and out of that race. That being said, I still think we match up favorably with any other MLB team. At this point, it's a question of execution. I don't blame them for a s***** weekend, the clubhouse got rocked by the Nomar trade, and the new players, etc. 1 game back of Texas in the WC. Anaheim, Chicago are the other contending clubs. It's gunna be one heck of a race... One game at a time. Wake...we need a good game from you.
  18. I heard on the radio that Trot might be done for the year. So the pickup of Dave Roberts helps that. I think Doug Mientkiewicz will probably start most of the games at first, with Ortiz DHing, and Kevin Millar picking up a lot of time out in RF. Roberts has a lot of range in the outfield, so maybe a defensive replacement for Millar late in games...I still like Kapler too, but he will probably suffer the most as a result of this deal. Keep in mind that Roberts has something nobody else on this team (besides Pokey and Damon)...speed. This is a slow team, which no doubt has hurt them this year. Roberts can be a very solid player off the bench.
  19. I would say the Nomar deal was a good deal for Boston. The Sox obviously knew he wasn't coming back and decided to do the deal now rather than later. I am still a bit dissapointed we didn't get at least one more arm. I have very little confidence in the bullpen right now...
  20. wow, did I call the Orlando Cabrera thing a couple days ago? Orlando's a very solid ballplayer. Can't blame anyone for sucking in Montreal...where the only motivation is to play well enough for someone else to want you. I think this deal works out best for all parties: Minnesota's committed to Morneau at first Mientkiewicz (sp?) was pretty much the odd man out. Orlando was unhappy in Montreal. The Expos pick up some prospects. The Cubs needed a bat at shortstop....they got one of the best. Finally, the Red Sox. Weak first base defense is strengthened. Cabrera is no Nomar with the bat, but he's better than Nomar with the glove. Dave Roberts I think is a big pickup....The Sox needed speed of the bench, and they got it! I honestly think after the Randy Johnson/Nomar thing fell through, this was the best option. Cabrera is VERY underrated (as I stated a few days ago) and should be good in Boston.
  21. The way Nomar described his ancle, it was a "it's still sore, and it's gunna be like this the whole season" kinda thing. Nothing to be too alarmed over at this point. I just hope Gutierrez doesn't start at short every time Nomar needs a day off! The good news is that Bronson is pitching awesome tonight... The bad news is so did Kevin Brown (for the Yankmees)
  22. The reports are true. Benson and Zambrano are headed to the Mets...Benson's supposed to start tomorrow against Atlanta. The Mets gave up 3 top prospects (Peterson, Huber, Kazmir) in these deals, despite the fact that they're 6 games out and currently UNDER .500 That being said, it's probably going to be the easiest division in baseball to win. I hope the Mets win, but only because it pisses George off....
  23. yeah, there's a bug in that site. I kept getting "page not found." Oh well, she's still an attractive female
  24. There's a lot of ways the Sox can lose this game. They lost a game with Schilling going against Borkowski...they can lose this game...easily. That being said...They can also win this game, and I believe they will.
