  1. sometimes Yankee fans don't know WHAT they're saying. Pedro will be the best pitcher on the FA market. The Yankees (and Steinbrenner) always go after the best players. That adds up to Yankee fans wanting Pedro. Would they (the fans) forget all about Pedro's Yankee conflicts if he signed? Absolutely.
  2. I voted Defense. The pitching has been better, but I think it's a direct result of the improved defense behind them. Cabrera > Nomar Mientkiewicz > Ortiz/Millar I can't wait until Pokey comes back and can play second base. Mueller/Cabrera/Reese/Mientkiewicz is going to be a VERY good defensive infield for late in games..... That being said, Bellhorn's been very good at second too...
  3. empire, for the most part I agree with you. I just think that Varitek's higher slugging percentage, batting average give him the slight edge. However, at least we can agree that it's a lot closer than most people realize, considering people have been talking about the dangerous Yankee lineup. On any given night, the Red Sox lineup could be equally as dangerous.
  4. Good win for the Sox! Re: Ortiz Yes, he looked like he tweaked his shoulder in the play at the plate after Svuem sent him in and he was out by a mile. He took a really UGLY roll after trying to avoid the tag. Wake gave up 3 hits in 8 innings! Leskanic throws a shutout inning in relief! Bring on the Angels!
  5. http://www.18eaststreet.com/articles/yanksvssoxpart1.html Hey guys. The link above is my version of a comparative offensive analysis between the Yankees and Red Sox. Please read and comment (here) I've been thinking about doing similar writeups comparing the rotations, bullpens, benches, etc (of these two teams). Would people here care to read them? (if so, I'll try to write them up within the next few days)
  6. I love aggressive baseball. Much more exciting to watch, and makes things interesting. For this reason, I have not been hard on Svuem... But sending Ortiz on that basehit to left wasn't aggressive, it was STUPID. Ortiz is slow, the ball was shallow (and hit pretty hard by Cabrera). Overall I like how Svuem is aggressive, but he's got to be more selective on sending people. It didn't hurt us last night, but it EASILY could in the future.
  7. Glad Sheff's better. I never wish injuries on anyone, even Yankees. Gotta actually feel sorry for Sheff. Yes, he's a jerk with a big mouth, but he really has battled some injuries this year: Thumb, ankle, shoulder.
  8. Rumors seem to be few and far between. Personally, the only thing the Sox need is another reliever, and that MAY come from within: Pedro Astacio may help, BK Kim could return, Mendoza's been doing well. Nixon, Reese to return in September. This is a strong team, finally starting to play like they are capable of. Has anyone heard any recent rumors? The deadline is August 31st, which is tomorrow.
  9. I voted Bronson Arroyo. The guy gets no love despite a 4.29 ERA/1.25 WHIP, and a .252 BAA. Arroyo's striking out 7 batters per 9 and has a 109:37 K:BB ratio. That's almost 3:1. Compare that to Javier Vazquez (named by many the Yankees "ace") 4.32 ERA (Bronson's better) 1.20 WHIP (Javier's better, but not by much) .246 BAA (Javier's better, but not by much) 6.65 K/9 (Bronson's better) 120:42 K:BB Ratio (Bronson's better) In fact, (except W-L record, which can be highly deceptive) Bronson Arroyo's season stats compare favorably with ANY Yankee starter, including Brown, Mussina, Lieber, etc. Orlando Hernandez ERA (2.87) and BAA (.236) are lower, but his WHIP is higher, and he's thrown a fraction of the games Arroyo has.
  10. Bronson really deserves a better record than 9-6, he's thrown really well this year. Red Sox are returning home, where they tend to play much better. Johnson's pitched decent, but Arroyo's better. A game the Sox SHOULD win.
  11. The team is definately playing well right now, the only bad news is that Oakland, Anaheim, and to a lesser extent Texas are also playing well. Orlando's been awesome of late, and we need him to be! Has anyone heard an update on Mientkiewicz?
  12. Speaking of which, we've got to hope that Toronto starts a hot streak tonight. They play The Yankees for 4, and play Oakland, Anaheim, and Texas in September. Plus, we don't play them again this year. Go Jays! Also, the Twinkies could help us too. Texas and Anaheim now, and they finish up the year VS the Yankees. Go Twins! Speaking of which, we've got 20 games before we play the Yankees in late September. If we can cut their lead to 3 games by then, we've got a real shot at the division. As of this writing, we're 5.5 games back. It's doable, but I'm still focused on the Wild Card at this point.
  13. This might be somewhere else on the site, but maybe we could have Red Sox trivia questions (and other baseball trivia questions) and have running standings on who gets the most right?
  14. Does this have anything to do with the discussion of today's game? Also, do you have a source on that?
  15. Zenny, You have a point that the A's are underappreciated in the AL West. Kinda like Atlanta in the NL East. Absolutely everyone predicted someone ELSE to finish above them, but they are right there on top again. It's going to be a tight race in the AL West, I think Texas will falter, I think it will be between Oakland and Anaheim. It's hard to bet against a team with Zito, Mulder, Hudson, especially since they always seem to get hot at the end of the season. I don't think you're giving Anaheim's defense enough credit. Their outfield is very good with the gloves with Guillen, Guerrero, and Anderson. Plus Guillen/Guerrero have some of the best arms in the game. Erstad/Kennedy/Eckstein/Figgins is a solid enough defence, and Molina is good behind the plate. Oakland has OBP guys and power guys (Chavez,Durazo,Dye) but like the Red Sox, not a lot of speed. Anaheim has the extra weapon of being able to manufacture runs. Both teams are dangerous for sure, and you've got to give Anaheim a lot of credit for sweeping the Yankees...Oakland lost 2 of 3 in their last meeting
  16. Well, there's no question the Sox are the favorite in this thing. Schilling vs Towers is a game this team has GOT to win. Anaheim, Texas, Oakland...they're all hot right now. We've got to keep pace.
  17. I too thought the whole "Cowboy up" business was a little overboard. This team just needs to play winning baseball, not worry about head shavings or silly catch phrases. Hey, head shavings and catch phrases didn't work. What was the Marlins catch phrase last year? Didn't have one. Did Ivan Rodriguez get most of the players to band together by dying their hair, or shave their heads, or tear off the left shoulder of their sleeve, any of that other B.S? Afraid not. I hate to be a party-pooper, but Millar should focus his effors LESS on becoming a celebrity (KFC, Reverse the Curse Ice Cream,Cowboy up, etc) and more on playing BASEBALL.
  18. you said it, yeszir. I myself was looking at the scoreboards hoping Anaheim, Texas, and New York all lost. But the fact of the matter is, the Red Sox just gotta take care of themselves, and WIN BALLGAMES! Great win last night, Timlin bailing out Wake. Wake got out of his own jams early, which is always key in a close game. Foulke getting the save. Mirabelli coming through was huge. We have to admit we are getting ALL the breaks right now. Johnny Damon makes a bad play on Menechino's "triple," and we still are able to pull out a win. I guess these things happen in cycles. Let's hope the good luck keeps rolling!
  19. We've played very crappily against Anaheim this year, so it's key that we take 2 of 3 in that series. I agree that Anaheim should win the West, they are a much stronger team than Oakland. However, Oakland is still playing very well and should not be overlooked for the WC. I have to admit I figured Texas would be out of the running by now, with that pitching staff, I can't believe they're still in the race! Go Sox!
  20. We're going to have to agree to disagree on this one. I don't see Sheff as an MVP worthy player.
  21. Mark this day in history, because it may never happen again. I agree with Empirestrikesback26 about something. I don't believe Clemens will be traded from Houston. Why? Clemens has fan power. He's a home town hero in Houston, and when you're not winning, you need SOMEthing to bring the fans to the park. Clemens gives Houston that. People come out to the park to see Clemens play, even if Houston's out of the race. That means something. Would Clemens really want to come back to Boston? Probably not. I think all his problems with Boston were related to Duquette, who is long gone, but look at it this way: Clemens has already won a ring. He has nothing to prove. If he wanted to play in the north east and be on a contender, he would have re-signed with the Yankees. The bottom line is: Clemens wants to pitch at home, he wants to be with his family. Houston wants him to stay, Clemens wants to stay. Where's the motivation for a deal?
  22. Your argument for Sheff over Vlad is that Sheff is hurt? This somehow makes him MVP? Sorry, don't buy it. Sheff is a one-dimensional player. He can't steal bases anymore. He can't play defense. He hammers the ball, but that's about it. The Yankees would be worse off without Sheff, but still a very solid playoff contender. I'll give you the credit that Sheff has been the most consistent hitter in the Yankee lineup of late, but I just can't see Sheff winning it over the likes of Ivan Rodriguez or Vladimir Guerrero. Did you all realize that Sheff has hit 16 homers since the break? Twice as many as the next Yankee (A-Rod).
  23. The Newark Star Ledger has indicated that Tom Glavine has cleared waivers, meaning he can be dealt to any team. Sources say the Mets aren't interested in moving him, but if he becomes available, Theo has to make a move to pick this guy up. Thoughts? (a quote from the article)
  24. How many different threads now has empire declared Sheffield the sure-fire AL MVP? Wasn't there a thread dedicated to discussing the AL MVP? Why start a new one? Anyway, as I stated in the original thread, Vladimir Guerrero is my pick for AL MVP. How can Sheffield be MVP? He's not even the most valuable player on his team, let alone in the league. Sheffield provides very little in the field, can't run the bases anymore, and basically swings for the fences with every swing. Players on the Yankees that I deem more valuable than Sheff: Alex Rodriguez Mariano Rivera Javier Vazquez Hideki Matsui Derek Jeter Jorge Posada OK, so pitchers don't win MVP awards. That still leaves 4 position players on the Yankees above Sheff on the MVP list. No way he wins the award.
  25. I voted Santana. I have to say that Rivera doesn't deserve to win the Cy Young. Rivera's the best closer in the game, but I just don't believe that relief pitchers deserve to win the award. The save is an overblown statistic. Pitchers can throw 3 innings in a mopup game, or get 3 outs with a 3 run lead and get a save. I didn't like how Gagne won it last year, and I don't think Rivera (or any reliever, for that matter) should win it this year. Santana really is stabalizing that Minnesota staff and is really keeping Minnesota atop the AL Central this year. he's 14-6 with a 3.13 ERA, and has an incredible 207:46 K:BB ratio All these pitchers are having great seasons, but Santana has pitched better than Pedro,Schilling,Mulder, and Hudson (in my opinion)
