  1. Well, Brazleton's out, and it's 8-1 Sox. Nobody posting tonight? Well, I won't be either after this. Just thought I'd comment.
  2. I never thought I'd be saying this, but it looks like Tampa Bay's the FAVORITE in this one. Brazleton's #s are pretty good, and Lowe's #s are...well....bad. The thing that jumped out at me as a bad sign for TB (good for Boston perhaps) is his K:BB ratio. He actualy has walked 38 and K'd 38. Not a good thing... However, with a .204 BAA this year, it seems he dominates hitters when he can control his stuff. On another note, he seems WAY more dominant at home than on the road Road: 5.66 ERA, 0-2, .266 BAA Home: 1.27 ERA, 4-1, .176 BAA
  3. Sarasoxfan, Have you only backed down on Bellhorn because he's not playing right now though?
  4. Hey guys, haven't posted a lot lately, been real busy with other stuff (ALMOST too busy to follow the sox!) Last night's game was a good win. It was nice to see that after Tampa Bay came back to tie the game, we came back again and beat them. This was a quality win. Arroyo pitched a great game at home! (good to see also). With Lowe tonight, Pedro tomorrow...we've got to get on a roll now.
  5. This Myers deal went under the radar! It was simply a side-note on all the websites...but I think this deal will have a MAJOR impact on the Sox down the stretch. Why? 2 reasons: The Red Sox lacked a lefty specialist. Embree is a decent pitcher (despite what sarasoxfan says), but less effective against lefties than righties. Francona was using him in the wrong role, setting him up for failure (in my opinion). Mike Myers is the classic lefty specialist. That side-winding motion is hard to pick up, and should help the bullpen solidify itself. Reason # 2. The Yankees also lack a lefty specialist, and Myers didn't go to NY. With Myers on the Sox, it keeps him away from the Yankees clutches (and they WERE going after him). Without that arm to neutralize Ortiz, the Yankee bullpen (with the exception of Rivera and most of the time Gordon) is hittable. Good pick up for the Sox.
  6. Last year I thought Ortiz was carrying this team down the stretch (and he may do so now, which is why it's a little early to be voting on this), but in the spirit of the poll, I voted Vladimir Guerrero. I think he's really helped transform that team into a very real World Series contender. He's the best all-around player on the list. I-Rod is a great player, and he has helped out Detroit immeasurably....but I just can't vote for an MVP on a sub-.500 team. I didn't agree with A-Rod getting it last year either. I am of the opinion that the MVP has to be on a CONTENDING team. It was between I-Rod and Guerrero for me, and I went with Guerrero. That being said, I think the last six weeks of the season could DRAMATICALLY turn my vote around. If Guerrero one of these guys really carries his team down the stretch (like Ortiz did last year) or if Guerrero and the Angels falter....I could change my tune. As of right now....I stand by my vote of Guerrero.
  7. I have 2 responses to Millar's comments: He's a little bitch for openly complaining to the media about his playing time. He has a point. This lineup needs more consistency if people are going to settle in and get hot for the stretch run. Terry: Have some conviction, pick a lineup, and go with it!
  8. yes, very good article. I don't believe in curses, the Red Sox just make bad decisions. It just seems the Red Sox can't let a player go without turning it into a circus (Clemens, Vaughn, Boggs, now Nomar) Is this the media's fault? maybe. Why can't the owners and other execs just shut the F up?
  9. Empire, Not in '04 they won't. They might get him in the offseason, but what in the world would stop Epstein from blocking Randy from the Yankees? Or for that matter, the Dodgers, Angels, Athetics, etc, etc. He will probably get traded after the 2004 season is over, but I find it hard to believe that Randy Johnson makes it through waivers.
  10. Yeszir, It's a little early to be thinking sweep. Derek hasn't faced Detroit this year (and he's struggling), and Maroth hasn't faced Boston (and he's doing much better this year). I'm not sure how much we can trust historical stats... The bottom line is the Tigers are a less talented team than we are, and we should win 2 of 3. Championship caliber teams beat up on teams like Tampa Bay and Detroit. We may find out just what this team is made of this weekend. At this point, every SERIES is a must-win. If we take 2 of 3 every series (on average) I like our chances for the playoffs (and isn't that the goal at this point?) Let's hope an improved defense helps out Derek Lowe tonight.
  11. I hate how Francona's always talking about how he loves all his players. Listen Terry: It isn't the job of a manager to love his players or make his players love him. It's GET THE JOB DONE. If the job isn't getting done, it's your duty to make sure it gets done. If the people under you don't get the job done, it falls on you to make the necessary decisions in order to fix the problem. Terry, if someone doesn't get lefthanded batters out....DON'T PUT THEM IN AGAINST LEFTIES!! If someone looks like they are tiring: PUT IN SOMEONE ELSE. Who cares if their feelings are hurt. If you win the game, you accomplished your goal for that day. I don't always get my way at work (who does?) but I have confidence that my managers are making the right decisions. How can players have ANY confidence in Terry at this point?
  12. Honestly I think this is a childish mud-slinging contest between Nomar and the Sox. Both are in the wrong (if for nothing else than just keeping this going). Theo had the right idea: Let it go. Nobody knows how Nomar really feels but Nomar...but who cares!?! The Sox officials have more important things to worry about than how Nomar got injured. We're 2 games back of the Wild Card and 9.5 games behind the Yankees. Maybe if the Red Sox focused their efforts on winning baseball games instead of discrediting former players...they wouldn't be such an underachieving team. This is where the Yankees completely outclass the Red Sox. Joe Torre and company know how to properly dispose of a clubhouse cancer (like Mondesi last year) without making it such an ordeal. And they know how to make a transaction (A-Rod) without embarrasing the organization. Wake up *******s. P.S. I was calling Red Sox management *******s, NOT anyone on this board.
  13. I have to agree with Zenny (as usual). Bellhorn has been VERY productive at the plate this year. Definately on par with Walker last year as far as his power numbers... and his on base percentage is awesome. Sure, from a #2 hitter you'd LIKE to see less strikeouts...But Bellhorn is in the top 5 second baseman in most offensive categories. That's saying something. I had a thought: What about Mientkiewicz hitting #2 sometimes? He seems to be a contact-style hitter who walks about as often as he strikes out....just a thought. Anyway, Bellhorn strikes out a lot, but he's still a very good offensive player (in my opinion) ESPECIALLY for second base.
  14. Noony, I want to be on record that there isn't a Red Sox fan alive right now who would like to see a more strict manager MORE than me. I was simply commenting on what was stated above, thinking that some of the players who have been accustomed to walking all over managers since the Jimy Williams era may not take too kindly to having such a drastic change. I think Pedro would probably be the worst culprit here. I think Schilling wants to win badly, and takes the game very seriously. I think Pedro loves the fact that he gets to do whatever he wants....( i.e. leave early, etc).
  15. Manny might be in a pissy mood if he was being disciplined all the time....for not running out groundballs, etc
  16. Derek has a point. You think Manny is going to accept actually being DISCIPLINED here in Boston? How do you think Pedro would like it if he actually had to stay with the team (instead of traveling a day early to the next road city), etc, etc. If a guy like Hargrove or Piniella came here Pedro, Manny, Schill, etc would be pissy. We'd have to trade them too. Maybe we should make a run at it this year, then let Pedro/Lowe go, trade Manny, and rebuild this offseason without the superstars. I hate Francona too at this point...maybe while he's having an orgy in the dugout someone ELSE (with some balls) can make decisions? Grady Little got fired for doing what Francona's doing right now...except Grady's team had heart.
  17. I agree with you. I don't like the way players walk all over Francona, and I don't like his use of the staff. Alan Embree is NOT A LEFTY SPECIALIST!!! Look at the numbers....lefties have a HIGHER batting average against him. Francona ruined Bronson's good outing by leaving him in when he didn't have much left and he gave up 4 runs. Francona said in the interview before the game that since he had Thursday off, he wouldn't be afraid to use whatever relievers he needed to get the job done....Then in the game, he leaves Arroyo in to get shelled. Make sense? I think Boston managers take too much heat sometimes....but Francona has gotten his chance to turn this team around. Earth to Theo and the Trio: We're still a .500 team since the trade deadline. Can Francona
  18. why in the hell did Arroyo stay in after loading the bases? why in the hell cant this team beat the f***ing devil rays?
  19. Arroyo's been money on the road this year, and the Red Sox have trouble vs lefties. Should be interesting.
  20. Sara, From what I heard on WEEI a couple days ago, it will probably be at least 2 weeks until we see Bellhorn or Pokey back on the field. I will be happy to see both back.
  21. Great game by Schill. This is what playoff caliber teams do: Win the games you're SUPPOSED to win.
  22. Noony, I too like McCarty. With Mientkiewicz here in Boston, he will suffer playing time, but he's another one of those guys who plays the game the right way. I dont think the Kapler @ 3B will happen either, also because the Sox can't afford to let him make mistakes on the job.
  23. I've stated time and time again that I'm FOR this trade, and I stand by it. I think it's about time this team went more towards a TEAM atmosphere than a STAR atmosphere. I think we'll find that we are a better team with Orlando, Mientkiewicz, and Roberts than we were with Nomar... I applaud Theo for making a bold move after the Trio f-ed up the Nomar situation. It was the right move (to trade him) and although we didn't get a pitcher, this was a good move.
  24. It's a horrid idea. The Yankees and Red Sox working together?!? The only good that might come of it would be the Sox taking in extra revenue, and sticking it to the Yankees by signing big-name players with YES money. But I just don't see that that happening. I just don't see George and the Yankees doing ANYTHING to cooperate with Theo and the Trio
  25. I like Bellhorn too. This certainly is no excuse if we start losing, because Mueller will be fine at second and Youk is a solid player... But we've got to get these guys back ASAP!! The bench (with Gutierrez as the only backup) is NOT satisfactory (in my opinion). Might we see Gabe Kapler play some third base?!?
