  1. Thoughts from today's game: 1. Bronson needs to figure out how to pitch to lefties. 2. John Halama needs to realize that Greg Maddux and lefties like Jeromy Burnitz should not be hitting homeruns off him. 3. Alan Embree blows donkey testicles. 4. Where the hell has Manny been? 5. Derrek Lee is one hell of a baseball player.
  2. D-Ped needs to play everyday. No use in having him sit on the bench unless there's an injury.
  3. I didn't hear it and I wouldn't believe it if it's true. Guys say things all the time. He's like 6 years away from his contract being up. Who knows what he'll be thinking then? Suppose he has 600+ homers. There's no way he's retiring.
  4. Yep.
  5. PS- He's not a career .260 hitter. He's a career .242 hitter.
  6. Look, I'm going to end it right here. Bellhorn is roughly a .250/.350/.425 hitter. Is that above average for a 2B? Yes. Is he worth the money he's making? Yes. Is he filling his role adequately? Yes. He was more productive than Alfonso Soriano's worst season in a very weak AL 2B crop last season. He's in the upper half of big league 2B's and probably in the second or third tier. He's enough; he'll do. We have a superior option waiting in the wings who'll give us .300/.375/.475 seasons for the league minimum next season. We don't need to replace him this season nor should we be actively pursuing a replacement when there are more pressing issues. He's a good enough #9 hitter, solid defensive 2B who turns a quick DP and he knows how to take a walk. RSR did a nice analysis on him and he's pretty much right. It's over. It's done. It's not like he's in the long-term plans and he's enough for us now. Thank you, good night. Let's worry about something else now.
  7. Vazquez being "unable to pitch in the clutch" is a myth. He had a mechanical failure where he was dropping his elbow and shoulder, which both tipped off his pitches (especially to lefties- see the Damon homerun, he said he was looking for a first-pitch fastball, recognized it and hammered it) and lessened his control a great deal. If he had a competent pitching coach, it would've been fixed after one bad start instead of lingering for half a season and leading to him being traded.
  8. I love jinxing games. I say they're gonna win, they lose. I say they're gonna lose, they win. I can never be right.
  9. It's going to look very smart in a year or two when Pedro proves us right for not wanting to include that 4th year (he might make it look even better when he goes down in the 2nd or 3rd year). Is he pitching great? Yes. Was there a huge risk re-signing him? Absolutely.
  10. As good as Wells has been, Carpenter has been just as good, maybe better. This is mucho frustrating.
  11. Why are you worried about Miller? He's over his shoulder trouble and has had only one bad start all season and it was on turf.
  12. We don't really need Vazquez and he wouldn't be worth the price. Schilling is coming back. Miller and Clement are at least very good #2 starters. Arroyo is a very good #3 and would be at least a 2 on other teams. Wells can still bring it as we saw in his last start against the Yankees. Wake is just having another one of his horrible stretches that he'll snap out of before the month is over and he'll be good the rest of the way. I'm not concerned with the rotation.
  13. The Tigers needed the good middle infield depth with Infante playing horribly, Carlos Guillen always day-to-day and Tony Giarratano unready. What I don't get is why they traded Martinez also. They needed him for the depth so Tony G. can go back to AA. I guess we'll never know.
  14. ... and Jeff's going to be one hell of a power hitter.
  15. We're losing this one. I can just feel a sweep. Carpenter is a great pitcher and Wells has the potential to get pounded every time he steps on the mound.
  16. Papelbon has also been very good, but not as impressive as Lester when you factor in that Pap is 24 and Lester is 21. 10 starts, 61.2 IP, 42 H (7 HR), 53/17 K/BB, 2.48 ERA. He still has great stuff and could be a #2 starter for us, but he needs to pitch well, and quickly, due to his age.
  17. Lester's been extremely excellent thus far. 10 starts, 57.1 IP, 50 H (4 HR), 59/19 K/BB and a 2.98 ERA. Also consider that he's just 21 years old and in a tough pitcher's league and park and that makes what he's done so far even better. He's had some arm trouble in the past, which is moderately worrying, but he's establishing himself as the best left-handed pitching prospect we've had in a long time.
  18. Pedroia's hitting .314/.395/.500 with 13 2B's, 1 3B and 7 HR's and a 25/19 BB/K. He's leaving little doubt that he should be in the running as next year's starting 2B for the Sox.
  19. Hanley's hiting a moderately disappointing .284/.333/.428 with 8 2B's, 7 3B's and 2 HR's with a 13/26 BB/K. He's been slumping of late. I'd like to see a lot more out of him.
  20. Moss is hitting .294/.372/.500 on the season with 14 2B's, 7 HR and a 21/46 BB/K but he's walked in 5 consecutive games and hasn't K'd in any of them. With that excellent plate discipline and all the extra-base power he's putting up, I'd say he's well adjusted to the league.
  21. Boras is going to remind us that Hansen is pretty much Brad Lidge as well. It'll come out of our checkbook, but I think he's a definite must-sign. I mean, you can run him out there at the end of a game with Manny Delcarmen (local kid from Hyde Park who throws in the mid-90's and has a killer curveball) and Cla Meredith (who'll be a good set-up man/middle reliever that gets lots of groundballs) and we're going to have a deadly bullpen for a long time. They'll be cheap and young, too.
  22. Miller is still arbitration eligible for next season, so he is our property. He hasn't had the full six years of service and the only reason he was a FA is because he was non-tendered.
  23. We're building a farm system the most effective way possible. You take the college guys that are going to contribute soon early in the draft (Ellsbury, Hansen, Lowrie, etc.) and then you take the high-upside, high-risk high school kids a little bit later (Bowden, Egan, Blue, etc.). So, you have the guaranteed talent that isn't necessarily elite and then you have the high-risk, high-reward kids later that develop into superstars, but only a handful of them do so.
  24. Pedroia's hitting .307/.384/.490; 23/19 BB/K; 12 2B, 1 3B, 7 HR in 192 AB's and that's not factoring in the 2-2 with a 2B and 2 BB's tonight, which raises all of those numbers. I would like to see him spend at least a month or two in Pawtucket. He seems to have proven that he can hit AA pitching and an advanced college prospect like himself can make the AAA transition, which would only help him for a potential jump for next season. He looks ready. I'd also like to see Youkilis as the everyday 3B next season and Adam Dunn as the everyday 1B. The former is easy, but the latter will take some doing.
  25. Moss went 1-3 with another double and another walk. It's not even worth it to do any more updates from after the rainouts. Just know that he's been mashing the ball and his plate discipline has been excellent. PS- I'm not doing the math because I'm lazy and tired.
