  1. Guys, this was a no-risk, high-reward minor deal. I love it, but be assured, more will come. It's not like Theo's done or anything.
  2. I love Theo Epstein. If I was gay, I would marry the man (yes, we can do that in this state). Anyway, I'm not gay and I won't marry Theo, but he's friggin' brilliant.
  3. I find it funny that a Yankee fan is trying to start a flame war over farm systems. Kind of sad, too, when the Yankees, clearly have the worst farm system in MLB according to whoever you read and/or talk to.
  4. Varitek is free to fire his agent at any time if he feels he is being unreasonable. The Golden Boy is not free from blame here people.
  5. Barry Zito is the most overrated pitcher in baseball. He's a big name with no substance. No thank you.
  6. I have a feeling that he's going to get ~400 plate appearances next season.
  7. I'll be shocked if he becomes anything more than an MLB platoon player.
  8. Ron Artest defines the word "bitch".
  9. There's no way Castilla has an OBP over .300 in Washington next season. The Coors effect was the only reason he had a good season. Wilkerson and Johnson are two very good OBP players, while Vidro and Guillen are also rather adept at getting on base. Still, Johnson is never healthy and Vidro's coming off a tough injury year himself. Beyond those 4 guys, the team OBP is going to be below .300.
  10. Washington's going to have an awful team OBP this year. You can't score without folks on base. Jim Bowden's formula does not work; he's just going for names and foresaking any semblance of logic. The Guillen trade was OK, but that left side of the infield blows. Pathetic.
  11. Not much in terms of upside. He doesn't throw very hard, but he does change speeds well and is fairly good at locating. He just doesn't do enough all that well to push him over the edge as a regular contributing member of a rotation.
  12. Likely trade him. What else could they do with him? I'm sure Jim Bowden would love to give up Ryan Church and Maicer Izturis for an aging, .275 OBP catcher after we acquire Schneider. (That was sarcasm at Jim Bowden's stupidity if you didn't catch it. I know most people don't follow prospects, so I felt the need to clarify.)
  13. I've been saying this all along. We just need a one year rental player until Hanley is ready.
  14. In terms of potential: Papelbon Delcarmen Lester Sanchez Alvarez In terms of reaching their potential: Alvarez Papelbon Sanchez Lester Delcarmen So that'd leave my combined list like this: Papelbon Lester Delcarm Alvarez Sanchez (I really want to see better offspeed stuff from him)
  15. He has a plus cut-splitter as well. He also working on refining a changeup. Combine that with the fact the he has very little wear and tear on his arm due to just becoming a pitcher in college. This kid is going to be something to watch.
  16. It wouldn't be overly crazy, but I'd like to see him dominate AA and AAA for 1/2 seasons next year. Still, I think he has the most upside of all our prospects. That's right, I said it. That includes Hanley and Manny D. I think this kid can be a very similar pitcher to Roger Clemens. THE Roger Clemens.
  17. We should purely sign a stopgap at SS. I don't like Larkin in a starting role and Vizquel looks like he's off to the other Sox. What about trading for Julio Lugo for a season and then non-tender him after the season (or just let him go via free agency if he's not arbo-eligible any longer)? That court case he has going on in Houston is scary, though.
  18. Bingo.
  19. Spending $8-10 million dollars a year for the next three years on the guy who plays 50-75 games a year is not a smart proposition, no matter how good he may be when he steps onto the field. Glaus has been steadily declining since 2000. Not a positive trend.
  20. In regards to Bellhorn, he's still arbitration eligible. I believe this is his last year for arbo. In regards to Glaus, you don't build around injury-prone players. The Yankees and Angels learned that the hard way this season. He's going to make too much just to get hurt playing 3B. Him playing 1B is an intruiging option, because he shoulder will take less wear and tear with fewer throws across the diamond, but still, there's a lot of risk there.
  21. Is it just me, or would Shoppach produce the exact same numbers as Schneider? Not to mention Shopp would benefit more from the Fenway effect being right-handed. The Sox should just stick to the original plan: split time between Mirabelli and a free agent and see how Shopp does at AAA by mid-season. Back in 1997, some 23 year-old right fielder had strikingly similar numbers to our 24 year-old catcher. That extra year at AAA really helped. Granted, Trot never whiffed like Shopp did, but there is no doubt we'll see dramatic improvements next season out of him. Besides, Shopp is already more prolific at the long ball, with 2 more longballs in 4/5 of the games.
  22. Not at all. He is a former top prospect who is on the mend from shoulder surgery. This was a no risk/high reward deal. He'd be better than Heredia and Nitkowski while hurt, nevermind healthy. I love this pickup.
  23. Mientkiewicz, if he plays like he did in 2003. If he hits like '04, then Kentucky Fried Kevin. (For the record, I voted Mientkiewicz.)
  24. Wow, what an amazing pickup. I cannot believe the Guardians just let him go for nothing. This could potentially change the whole complexion of the 2005 or 2006 rotation, similar to what Bronson Arroyo did. However, I believe Traber is even better than Arroyo can be. I love Theo Epstein.
  25. Yeah, but the Dominican League routinely has guys who are current or former pros. The kid hasn't even touched A-ball yet. This is not at all a big deal.
