Bill Mueller’s Knee Injury Might Threaten Career

It looks like he's done. That sucks. He still goes down as one of the great Red Sox of all time simply for '03 and '04 in my book. He killed Rivera. -

Game Info: Date: Friday, June 23rd, 2006 First Pitch: 7:05pm EST Location: Fenway Park, Boston MA TV: NESN Starting Pitchers: http://i.a.cnn.net/si/images/baseball/mlb/players/7071.jpghttp://bellsouthpwp.net/c/h/chinigor/TALKSOX/VS.GIFhttp://i.a.cnn.net/si/images/baseball/mlb/players/6403.jpg http://espn-att.starwave.com/i/teamlogos/mlb/sml/trans/phi.gif#63 Ryan Madson (7-4, 5.79) http://espn-att.starwave.com/i/teamlogos/mlb/sml/trans/bos.gif#19 Josh Beckett (8-3, 5.09) Phillies - Red Sox Preview The Philadelphia Phillies didn't help the Boston Red Sox very much this week. Then again, the Red Sox haven't really needed it. Boston looks to extend its longest winning streak of the season on Friday in the opener of a three-game set with struggling Philadelphia. ''It's hard to put everything together at once,'' Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz said Wednesday after hitting a grand slam in Boston's 9-3 victory over Washington. ''When you put it together like we are right now, it gives you a chance to win a lot of games.'' With Philadelphia losing the last two games of its series this week against the New York Yankees , Boston has only a two-game lead over the second-place Yankees in the AL East. The Red Sox improved their interleague record to 8-1 and RedSoxRooter's game thread record to 9-1 by sweeping three home games with the Nationals and a three-game set in Atlanta. With those six consecutive victories, Boston goes into this series seeking its longest win streak since its 2005-best eight-game run from July 26-Aug. 4. Ortiz has hit safely in five straight games, going 7-for-19 (.368) with three homers and seven RBIs. Trot Nixon also had a big series against Washington despite sitting out the opener, going 6-for-10 with four doubles and three RBIs. Manny Ramirez has driven in a run in four consecutive games, batting .375 (6-for-16) with two homers, and now looks to atone for his 1-for-11 performance in a three-game set at Philadelphia from May 19-21. Third baseman Mike Lowell , though, helped Boston win two of those three games as he went 5-for-7 with two homers and four RBIs in the series. Lowell was acquired from Florida in the offseason along with Josh Beckett (8-3, 5.09 ERA), who is looking to maintain his perfect record at Fenway Park when he takes the mound Friday. The right-hander is 3-0 with a 2.67 ERA in five home starts this season. Beckett, though, has been inconsistent in his first season in the AL. He was 0-2 with a 13.54 ERA in his previous three starts before beating Atlanta on Saturday, allowing two runs and three hits over six innings in a 5-3 win. Beckett has not pitched more than six innings in any of his five starts since he allowed four runs - three earned - in seven innings of an 8-4 win over Philadelphia on May 20. ''It's a transition,'' said Beckett, who is 7-3 with a 3.80 ERA against the Phillies. ''Everybody who gets traded to the American League has to go through that. Nobody is feeling sorry for me because I got traded to the American League. I'm lucky to be on a team that doesn't force you to throw a shutout every time. You don't have to with our lineup.'' Ryan Madson (7-4, 5.79), who was coming out of Philadelphia's bullpen during the last Boston series, will oppose Beckett. He is 3-1 with a 5.52 since he returned to the starting rotation in late May. The Phillies are 9-2 this season when Madson starts. In his last outing, Madson picked up a victory as he allowed four runs - two earned - in 6 2-3 innings on Sunday in an 8-5 win over Tampa Bay. All three of Madson's previous appearances against Boston came in relief, going 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA. The Phillies fell to 3-6 in interleague play on Wednesday with a 5-0 loss to the Yankees, just the second time they've been shut out this season. The first, a 6-0 defeat to Washington on June 11, started Philadelphia's current 2-8 stretch. ''We need to win some games,'' Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. ''We need to get to the All-Star break over .500.'' Facing Beckett might not help matters. Bobby Abreu has batted .161 (5-for-31) with 14 strikeouts against him, while Pat Burrell has hit .188 (6-for-32). Let's keep it going. Go Sox!

Rookie starter Jon Lester looks to lead the Red Sox to their season-best sixth straight victory when they wrap up their three-game series with the Washington Nationals on Wednesday at Fenway Park. Boston (41-28) dropped four in a row from June 11-15, their longest losing streak since May 24-27 of last season. However, the Red Sox followed up the slide with a three-game sweep at Atlanta, and haven't lost since. Boston beat Washington 11-3 on Tuesday for their third five-game winning streak of the season. The Red Sox have not won six in a row since last Aug. 7-13. Coco Crisp homered and Mark Loretta drove in three runs for the Red Sox , who had a season-high 17 hits. ''We did a pretty good job with runners in scoring position especially with a guy like (Washington starter) Livan (Hernandez) who likes to change speeds,'' said Alex Cora , who was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and is 19-for-50 (.380) over his last 17 games. The Red Sox , who sent 12 men to the plate in a six-run second inning, improved to 8-0 all-time at Fenway Park against the Nationals. They have also won 11 of their last 12 interleague games. Lester (1-0, 3.48 ERA) will look to help Boston complete its second consecutive sweep. He earned his first major league win on Friday, allowing just one run in six innings of a 4-1 win over the Atlanta Braves . ''It's what you dream of as a little kid,'' he said. ''I can't really describe how it is right now. It hasn't really sunk in. All I can say is it was a lot of fun and I'll always remember it.'' The 22-year-old left-hander became the youngest Red Sox pitcher to earn a win since Juan Pena on May 8, 1999. He made his major league debut six days earlier, giving up three runs in 4 1-3 innings of Boston's 7-4 loss to Texas after a 4 hour, 47 minute rain delay. ''I pounded the zone better with my fastball,'' said Lester, Boston's first pick in the 2002 draft. ''I had better command with everything, and just went right after them and made them hit it.'' Alfonso Soriano doubled twice Tuesday for the Nationals (32-41), who have dropped seven of their last nine. Nick Johnson missed his third consecutive game with a lower back strain and is still day-to-day. ''Even when we were losing earlier in the season, we were still playing well,'' closer Chad Cordero said. ''We just haven't been able to keep their hitters down the last few games.'' Shawn Hill (1-1, 2.42) will take the mound for Washington in the series finale. He allowed three runs in six innings of the Nationals' 7-5 loss to the New York Yankees on Friday, but did not receive a decision. The rookie right-hander, who has never faced Boston, has allowed just eight runs in 26 innings in four starts this season. Sorry for the late post. I almost forgot... GO SOX! SWEEP!

I know there's probably a thread already about this, but if Theo's looking for anything at the trade deadline, it's starting pitching. Considering the lack of market (unless a Willis or Smoltz comes up), there's nothing worth trading for. If Beckett can get it figured out and there's even a possibility that Clement, Wells, Pauley or Abe can fill the #5, this team is going to be real fun to watch the second half. mojo -

The Red Sox (40-28) have won four straight games over NL opponents including a weekend sweep at Atlanta, and are 6-1 in interleague games this season. They are outscoring the NL 25-14 during their current winning streak after defeating the Nationals 6-3 in Monday's series opener. Boston is 8-2 in interleague games at Fenway Park since the start of last season, and is 15-2 in all interleague games since June 12, 2005. Manny Ramirez hit his 18th homer of the season on Monday, and has hit a home run in each of his last three games at home. Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell is 7-for-18 (.389) in his last five games, and is 17-for-47 (.362) in his career against Tuesday's Washington starter Livan Hernandez. The Nationals (32-40) have lost six of their last eight games, and manager Frank Robinson needs a strong outing from Hernandez (5-7, 5.18 ERA). Washington starters have pitched fewer than 4 1-3 innings in three of the last six games, with Nationals opponents averaging 7.7 runs in those contests. ''If our starting pitching doesn't go deep, we're in trouble,'' Robinson said. Hernandez is 5-0 with a 2.45 ERA in six interleague starts since June 27, 2004, and is 16-11 with a 4.39 ERA in 33 career interleague games. While he has been unbeatable in interleague games recently, Hernandez has struggled in his last two starts. After winning four straight starts from May 21-June 5, the right-hander has lost his last two. He gave up six runs and eight hits while throwing a season-high 138 pitches in 6 2-3 innings in an 8-1 loss to Colorado on Thursday. ''Baseball is like that. You've got to understand you're not going to be perfect every day,'' Hernandez said. Hernandez allowed six runs and eight hits in 6 1-3 innings in a 7-1 loss in his only career game against Boston, on July 20, 1999 when he played for Florida. The Red Sox will counter with knuckleballer Tim Wakefield , who looks for his first win since throwing eight shutout innings against Tampa Bay on May 28. Wakefield (4-8, 3.97) is 0-2 with a 3.60 ERA in his last three starts, and allowed four runs and eight hits in six innings of a 5-3 loss to Minnesota on Thursday. ''It just wasn't our night,'' said Wakefield, who suffered his first loss at the Metrodome since April 26, 1999 - a span of five starts. The knuckleballer has never faced Washington in his 14-year career, and he is 5-12 with a 5.19 ERA in 23 interleague starts. Wakefield is 2-6 with a 5.25 ERA in 12 home interleague starts, and the Red Sox are just 2-10 in those games. Nationals left fielder Alfonso Soriano is batting just .158 (3-for-19) in his last five games, but is 10-for-33 (.303) with four homers and seven RBIs in his career against Wakefield. Time to put up some runs for Wake. GO SOX!

I must admit that a small, annoying part of me would love to see Smoltz in a Sox uniform. Maybe even as a closer and move Pap to the rotation??? Hmm. Me thinks I likes, but it's absurd. Crazy brain.
-
I believe the Braves would do a Smoltz for Hansen deal. Not that I would or wouldn't. Just saying it's the only move that makes sense for the Braves.
