  1. I like it though I don't like the "Show all smileys feature". Just show 'em all to begin with.

After roughing up Martinez in his return to Fenway Park, the Red Sox look to extend the longest winning streak in the major leagues this season and set an AL mark for consecutive errorless games when they close a three-game series with the New York Mets on Thursday. Boston's 11 consecutive victories have all come in interleague play. A big key to the run has been the team's improved defense, which has gone a league record-tying 15 straight games without an error and the fact that RedSoxRooter has been starting the team's game threads at Talksox.com. The Red Sox (47-28) share the mark with the 1996 Texas Rangers . The 1992 St. Louis Cardinals' run of 16 straight errorless games is the major league record. ''I know there will be games where you get a little sloppy or something,'' Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. ''But we have a very good defensive team. When we play other guys that aren't regulars ... we don't lose anything defensively. We should be good defensively. That should be one of our constants.'' Boston last won 12 in a row from Aug. 3-14, 1995. To match that run, the Red Sox must complete a sweep of the Mets (47-30), who haven't lost more than two in a row all season. The Red Sox team record is 15 consecutive wins, set in 1946. Martinez, the longtime ace of the Red Sox staff who helped the club win its first World Series in 86 years in 2004, received a warm ovation from the Fenway crowd Wednesday night. Boston's lineup wasn't nearly as friendly. The Red Sox knocked out Martinez after three innings, pounding him for eight runs - six earned - and seven hits. ''The Red Sox are a hot team right now and will probably unload on anybody,'' he said. Boston, 13-1 against the NL this season, remained 3 1/2 games ahead of the New York Yankees for the AL East lead. The Red Sox swept three-game series from Atlanta, Washington and Philadelphia, and will try to finish off New York behind current ace Curt Schilling (9-2, 3.61 ERA). The right-hander was first in the AL to nine wins, but has failed to earn a decision in each of his last three starts since a June 8 win over the Yankees, despite a 2.70 ERA over that span. He now trails Detroit's Kenny Rogers and Boston teammate Josh Beckett , who got his 10th victory Wednesday with 7 2-3 innings of two-run ball. Schilling is 12-5 with a 2.41 ERA and five complete games in 25 appearances, including 17 starts, against New York. He's beaten the Mets three straight times, although he hasn't faced them since August 2001. Schilling struck out a season-high 10 and allowed three earned runs in six innings of Boston's 5-3, 10-inning win over the Phillies on Saturday, but he loaded the bases with no outs before departing. Philadelphia went on to score the tying run. The Mets have dropped seven of 12, but continue to lead the NL East by 12 games over the second-place Phillies. A big reason for that has been left-hander Tom Glavine (11-2, 3.33), the major league leader in wins who will oppose Schilling on Thursday. Glavine hasn't lost since April 24 and was again outstanding in his last start, holding Toronto to one run in seven innings for a 6-1 win Friday. ''I'm still not where I want to be,'' Glavine said. ''I've been able to make decent pitches when I had to. I'm not 100 percent comfortable, but it's getting closer. By no means do I feel as good as earlier in the year, but the offense takes heat off you by scoring runs early.'' The left-hander is 3-2 with a 3.18 ERA in eight starts against the Red Sox . The Mets have allowed 19 runs in this series, their highest two-game total of the season. Red Sox second baseman Mark Loretta went 1-for-4 on Wednesday to extend his hitting streak to 11 games. Now this should be a good game... Be nice to sweep the homestand. GO SOX!
  12. When you type my name without uppercase characters, I seem like such a small man. A really, really small man.
  13. Oh yeah, THAT Pedro showed up tonight. :dunno:
  14. What the hell was that opening music???
  15. None. Nobody is really intimidated by an 89mph fastball - or by Pedro anymore. The Sox try to do this to all pitchers so I doubt that will change tonight. I'm more worried about Beckett and homers.

Judging by their reaction, Boston fans are happy to see him, too. The former Red Sox star makes his first-ever start against his former team when the New York Mets continue their three-game series at Fenway on Wednesday. Martinez went 117-37 with a 2.52 ERA in seven years with Boston, winning two Cy Young awards and helping the Red Sox capture the 2004 World Series -- their first title since 1918. However, he signed with the Mets after winning the championship when the Mets offered him four guaranteed years, something the Red Sox wouldn't do. How Martinez (7-3, 3.01 ERA) would be welcomed by Red Sox fans in his return was a matter of speculation -- until he received a standing ovation during the second inning of Tuesday's series opener. "It was emotional -- unless you don't have a heart," he said. "It was better than I thought. I thought some people would still be bitter." Center fielder Johnny Damon, also a member of the 2004 team who signed with the archrival New York Yankees during the offseason, was booed in his Fenway return in May. "It's been two years, and I still feel like they miss me. And it's a mutual feeling," Martinez said before the game. "I saw 86 years of agony for the fans here. They were here every day. That's why they have so much of my respect." Martinez stopped by the Red Sox clubhouse before Tuesday's game to see former teammates David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez, Trot Nixon and Jason Varitek. "It will be a little distracting," Ortiz said of facing Martinez. "I'll swing hard just in case I hit the ball." Martinez allowed two runs and two hits in six innings of Thursday's 6-2 win over Cincinnati. The right-hander, 2-3 in 10 starts since winning his first five outings this season, struck out eight but walked a season high-tying five. Martinez will face Josh Beckett (9-3, 4.84), who won his second straight start Friday, allowing two runs and three hits in a season-high eight innings of a 10-2 victory over Philadelphia. Beckett, who struck out a season-best eight while walking none, retired the first 16 batters he faced -- the most for a Red Sox pitcher since Curt Schilling retired the first 17 he faced on May 30, 2004 against Seattle. Both Phillies runs came on a two-run homer by Chase Utley in the seventh. Beckett has allowed 18 homers this season, a career high. The Red Sox (46-28) beat the Mets 9-4 in the series opener for their 10th straight victory, all in interleague play. Mike Lowell and Alex Gonzalez homered for Boston, which swept three-game series from the Braves, Nationals and Phillies. The Red Sox, 12-1 against the NL this season, lead the second-place Yankees by 3 1/2 games in the AL East. They have not committed an error in 14 straight games, the longest streak in the majors this season and one game shy of the AL record. Mets right fielder Xavier Nady left Tuesday's game with a bruised left wrist after getting hit by a pitch in the sixth. Shortstop Jose Reyes appeared hurt after colliding with Boston catcher Jason Varitek on a play at the plate in the fifth, but took the field in the bottom of the inning. Carlos Beltran went 2-for-2 with two walks and a homer, and Carlos Delgado and Eli Marrero also homered for the NL East-leading Mets (47-29), who are 5-6 in their last 11 contests but lead the division by 11 1/2 games. Beckett needs his A game because you know Pedro will be bringing his. Also, I'm not looking forward to sobbing like a baby during the ovation(s), but what's a guy to do? :dunno: GO SOX!
  17. Gammons is out of surgery. Let's hope for an easy recovery. I will really miss the guy if he goes.
