The Red Sox have not made a World Series appearance in my lifetime. I can only recall 3 playoff years. Right now the sox are getting creamed 6-0 in the top of the 4th in game 1 of the ALCS.
Don't misunderstand me please. I'm not jumping ship and declaring the sox dead, as yankee fans tend to do when their team hits the first sign of trouble. I'm just speaking my mind and admitting things that most sox fans won't admit, even though they know it's true. I don't expect the sox to win this year. You don't either when it's all said and done. I can hope, sure, but I don't expect them to win. And deep down, I know they most likely won't. They're the Red Sox dammit.
But that's the thing. They are the Red Sox. The Red Sox are the Red Sox because they blow it and give their fans ulcers. That's what they do, there's no denying it. We can all have a good laugh and a few heart attacks about it. I don't really know how to say this without sounding like a complete dumbass, but I kind of don't want the sox to win it that badly. I can accept defeat, my entire baseball fan career has been centered around it.
If the sox win, doesn't that take the fun out of it? Won't we just be like any other team? We'd have won a championship, sure, but what then? The joy of the sox (take the word Joy with a grain of salt) is that they don't win. Ever. I don't really know how to put it into words though. I'm not rooting for the f***ing yankees, far from it. I'm rooting for the sox with all my might, believe me. It's just that I know, no matter how much I and all of Boston root, that the odds are against us.
Watching this game now, I'm hoping it's quick and easy. No "what ifs" or "what could have beens". They may just get slaughtered. Watching this game you half expect them to. Meh, I don't even know what I'm trying to say. I want them to win, but I dont, because what fun would it be then? I try to be optimistic about the team, but it's kinda hard to do, you know?
Oh well.
