From google:

“ OPS+ takes a player's on-base plus slugging percentage and normalizes the number across the entire league. It accounts for external factors like ballparks. It then adjusts so a score of 100 is league average, and 150 is 50 percent better than the league average.”

Thank you. That tells me that, by normalizing to 100, we have no idea what a player's real OPS is. Give me the actual OPS any time and every time. I want to know what the player actually did, not how normal he is.

Is that for a career or single season?

If it's for a career, I'd guess Ruth. If it's for a single season, I'd guess Bonds.

Career

And you’re right!

Ruth

5-2, Sox. Time to bring out the boobirds again to cheer for the Jays to score more runs against Bryan "I'm not really trying" Bello.

Whatever can be said about Bello--and I think it's pretty good--the real story is that the offense is coming through yet again.

I think OPS+ is better because some ballparks are hitters parks and some aren’t. OPS+ corrects for that. For example the parks the A’s play in has a lot of foul territory resulting in more foul ball outs.

I think you have to look at all the stats.

But no one stat tells you everything.

Dude has been hittable. One of the most disappointing pitchers.

Another bad call by D-money. Quality start--6 innings, 2 runs--by Bello.

Trout is at 176

Bonds was at 182 but he cheated

Bonds during an interview said that whether or not he took steroids he still had to hit the ball. He was unaware, I guess, that when he did hit the ball, it went a longer distance. Truly not a likable guy.

No. Tonight he was good, and I foresaw it and you didn't.

I didn’t foresee it. But I watched the game he pitched and when you are always dealing with 2 runners on base you’re going to need to be lucky. To his credit he didn’t implode but pitchers with a high WHIP tend to give up a lot of runs. Hopefully he’ll get his act together. He certainly has the talent to do it.

Agree no one stat says it all. Don't disagree OPS+ has some utility. But I still prefer straight OPS. Ted Williams lifetime OPS was 1.116, which is a number any player would be thrilled to have in a single season. Babe Ruth's was 1.164, which astounds me given that he never took care of himself.

I live out here near SF. So I was able to read stories about him in the local newspapers. Apparently he’s a real ass. Rude. Arrogant.

Very good start by the inconsistent Bello tonight.

Actually, he's been kind of consistently bad the last two months. Maybe tonight was a restart. I like Wong a lot more than McGuire. But, call me superstitious, I kind of believe in CERA, and tonight McGuire caught Bello. So I hope he catches him next time as well.

Given what little I know about Barry, I think that's possible. He got all the money Willie would have made if he had come along about the time Curt Flood blew away the reserve clause. Mays played stickball with the neighborhood kids.

It'd be great if Romy Gonzalez could play 1st base.

If he can play SS, he can play 1B. But maybe not in midseason with no experience.

Try to find ways to blow this game.

You have a point. But I have to remind you it will be the same guys--the pitchers and the lineup--who got us the lead. So, me, I can't help but root for the good guys.

I mean, they're a bunch of nobodies except for Devers and Jansen. And tonight could be a sweep in Toronto, right after taking 2 of 3 back to back against the Phillies and again against Yankees.

Who are these guys?

The masked man and his friend Tonto.

Curious to see what Martin has this year. He was great last year. I think he’s back or will be soon.

He's back. Probably a good decision to ask for and get 2 weeks on the IL.

I'm sorry, Jays, but I don't like those uniforms. West Pointers are sometimes called the "black knights of the Hudson," but they don't actually dress that way.

Anxiety disorder is a pretty awful condition. Hopefully two weeks is enough

I actually like Canada more than I do half the states in this country.
