Anyone know the answer to this?

Say a player has two seasons left on his contract, but retires in the offseason. So OK, he forfeits that money. But what if he changes his mind any time during those two years, and comes back, but wants to sign with a different team? Can he do that, or does the first team somehow still have "rights" to him for those two seasons?

The team still own his rights. I assume your question stems from the Chipper Jones to the Yanks talk. I believe Atlanta would have to trade his rights to the Yankees. He would be free to sign with any team next off season.

No, wasn't thinking of that, the question just popped into my head. Thanks for the response.
